the radio graveyards are littered with people who THOUGHT they could do the SAME format better than the other 3 or 4 stations doing it, don't count on it and even IF you do, will anybody notice outside the radio community? and HOW LONG do you want to fight THAT fight? and how much do you want to lose doing it? example I-94...they MAY be better, than the competition..i don't know.. but appearantly the audience isn't willing to switch.
This is perhaps the best argument for staying in a format for a long time even if the initial ratings and/or cash flow does not support it. Just because a format may not take off in the first 9-12 months doesn't mean it is a failure.
YES it does! and may i add, all that is easy to say when its NOT your money... in THIS day and age, owners want and need "Instant" results.
in the case of I-94, in a 3 way race doing the same format competing for the same demos the odds were stacked against them from the get go. having said all that, Cumulus should have known better. i don't know if they will bail out of it to move this Streaming site to the airwaves, but it might make TOO MUCH SENSE for an outfit like that to do it.

Instant results are important for these public companies. Giving a format time to develop ratings and revenue isn't in the cards any longer. I94 is a revenue loser and will stay that way.

back to topic.... they've put alot of effort into indyoldies.com, they've bought jingles, voice talent, they run a Top Of The Hour ID., when they don't have to...its run like a RADIO STATION which i believe it will be in a matter of weeks. GUTS, i will give em' props! they're playing some late 50's along with the 60's... i would be happy, but surprized if THIS version makes it to the air. BUT it should, IF you're going to be "Oldies" BE OLDIES. that is why i respect Scott Shannon's version of it, he's NOT AFRAID to have the format be what it IS. VARIETY. having said that, the next incarnation of this for Indianapolis should be LIVE from 5am-7pm at least. as for I-94, who knows what they will do, but they're a good candidate, if for no other reason, Cumulus has made that frequency the "Format Of The Month" over the past few years.

The days of live Middays are all but over. No new format will have a live Midday jock ever again in this market. Those that currently have one will eventually replace them with voicetrackers. Live Nights and Overnights are gone and won't come back.

I'm not saying it's right, but I am saying it's how it is.

WFBQ used to be oldies...

naw, bring back the buzzard of rock!! Buster Bodean, Chris Conner?? that was the best station in history...loved the stereo broadcasts of the indy 500 with Paul Page and the vehicle sounds in stereo and buster bodean playing with the mics in stereo (dolby never did much for me tho, but i didn't mind the echo chamber on everything even tho i'm an "audiophile" leaning type.

I have a cassette of Classic Gold Rock n' Roll, WFBQ ah-oooh-oooh. Buddy Holly would've been proud of that jingle that ran about 1973 or so. Drake-Chenault programming, I believe.

I think Indy has had alot of Great stations,,, WKLR was the best at oldies, with their imaging and Jocks... And WZPL Indys Apple and Kiss 99,,, when WZPL had Jammin John Trout. WHHH when Bill Shirk owned them, they had tony Lamont, and The Hawk at night...WHERE ARE THEY NOW??? before they got all Ghettoed out,, they were Dance leaning, and WTLC Power 105.7 was a good Urban at the time. I dont remember much about WNAP except as a Top 40/Rock leaning station from 80-86... I wasnt around when WNAP had Chris Conner, but I know I would have loved the station.. Its too bad that indy sounds just like any other mid market Voice Tracked city.. Its lost its hoosier touch. Now the School stations are the best stations in Indy.

I-94 will not go away anytime soon - it's Cumulus' newest cookie cutter format template. They've been rolling out "I-whatever frequency" CHR stations across in the country in markets where they are making a format change. I would guess in Cumulus' world it's more cost efficient to take one format template [logos and everything] and repeat it everywhere you want to launch a new format, as long as you perceive there's some small piece of market you can hold on to, and not be so concerned about whether you're the 2nd, or 3rd in the market in that format. I suspect all Cumulus "I" stations are programmed identically, even sound syndicated market to market, with the same music logs and even same voices in some day parts with voice tracking.

and THAT'S a reason to keep doing it?

I have to admit that I like WNOU,,, but I wish they were still on the flame thrower 93.1 signal instead of a class a.. I also wish they would have kept the WNAP calls, they could have still called it Radio Now...

cspotrun,
I'm not being supportive of the Cumulus "I" strategy - I was simply responding to other posts here postulating on the possible demise of I94 sooner than later. I believe, for the reasons I stated, it's here to stay for awhile; 3rd, 4th or however deep the CHR format is in the market. ;)
