Infomercial on AN106.7?

And the program director DID have a problem with it... and he's gone. So, given that opposing what Cumulus upper management wants to sell is not the gateway to employment security, what chance do you think that the next PD will have in making any substantial changes?

I've got no major problem with stations wanting to run paid stuff to pay the bills. SO long as they don't try to pretend it's anything other than paid. WGST made no major effort to hide that they were running paid stuff. WSB has avoided mentioning the topic. I was never clear if the Alan Hunt show was running paid or not.

The problem with 106.7 is that they've spent their entire marketing effort telling us they are all news -and then doing precisely something else. So much for branding.

Didn't the old "Peach" run some infomercials overnight sometimes? I think I remember hearing them on the weekends. That sucked on a music station too. But I agree. Putting infomercials on an all-news station is WRONG.

"We're the only station in town that's live 24 hours a day." (Click HERE, and begin at 7:19 in.) Too bad that statement was not about AN106.7. :-\

Look at San Jose's KLIV 1590 AM they brand themselves as all-news for Santa Clara County but they air Talk Radio shows overnight and San Jose State sports on the Weekend's. Also Look at KGO-AM 810 San Francisco's Cumulus O&O they call themselves News and Information, Maybe WYAY-FM is just following the KGO Model.

The Allen Hunt Show doesn't run as a paid advertisement. You don't hear at the top of every hour during the show, "The following opinions don't necessarily reflect those of News/Talk WSB-AM/WSBB-FM, its staff, management, or parent company Cox Media Group". Plus, Allen Hunt is part of the staff, and his show doesn't syndicate anymore. It's strictly local. News/Talk WSB/WSBB may have avoided mentioning the topic of paid advertisements, but they do air some key shows that may very well be paid advertisements. Here are the schedules for Sunday morning along with late Sunday night/early Monday morning:

SUNDAY MORNING BLOCK

6:00 A.M.-6:30 A.M. Perspectives with Condace Pressley (Public Affairs)
6:30 A.M.-7:00 A.M. The Lutheran Hour with Pastor Ken Klaus (Religious)
7:00 A.M.-7:30 A.M. Day One (Religious)
7:30 A.M.-8:00 A.M. LIVE Service from First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta (Religious)

LATE SUNDAY NIGHT/EARLY MONDAY MORNING BLOCK

12:00 A.M. (12 Midnight)-12:30 A.M. Perspectives with Condace Pressley (Rebroadcast)
12:30 A.M.-1:00 A.M. Parenting Solutions with Bob Lancer (Advice Show)
1:00 A.M.-1:30 A.M. Business in the Black with Twanda Black (Public Affairs)
1:30 A.M.-2:00 A.M. The Heart of Atlanta with Mo Reilley (Public Affairs)

AFAIK, the folks at News/Talk WSB/WSBB do not say exactly at the beginning and/or end of each paid advertisement and religious programming the statement, "The following opinions don't necessarily reflect those of News/Talk WSB-AM/WSBB-FM, its staff, management, or parent company Cox Media Group", or anything similar to that. Anyway, that is all.

Of course, other notes I failed to mention in my previous post. Perspectives can also be heard on the other Cox stations such as B98.5 FM and 97.1 The River. Business in the Black can also be heard on KISS 104.1 FM WALR. The Heart of Atlanta is also heard on B98.5 FM.

Dr. Joe Esposito has been the early Sunday morning "entertainment" on B98.5 FM. I think he's now heard on 750/95.5 also.

Roddy, you're right about Dr. Joe Esposito. His show is called Health Talk Atlanta. It can be heard Sunday mornings at 5AM on News/Talk WSB/WSBB. Then it airs again at 7AM on B98.5 WSB-FM as well as on Talk 920 AM WGKA. It also comes on Saturday mornings at 9AM on Christian Talk 970/1400 AM WNIV/WLTA. Now, Health Talk Atlanta is not a paid advertisement. I do like the fact that it's a health-related show. It's similar to that of The Weekly Check-Up with Dr. Bruce Feinberg which comes on Sunday afternoons from 3PM-5PM on News/Talk WSB/WSBB. Now, I don't get to listen to these shows very often. It's very rare if I ever get the opportunity to listen to these shows. Anyway, both shows are very informative. That is all.

I could see some audience with airing Tech football games on Mostly News 106.7 but does Tech basketball having enough fans justifying a big FM signal. While the local NBA team is not even on a full power FM.

It was interesting the way they did the Thanksgiving Day programming. They used two or three long form shows from ABC radio on shopping, movies, etc. Each half hour had a 5-7 minute news segment and then went into the long form show. I have to say, it really worked for the day. I listened to the ABC Radio show and it was topical for shopping and entertaining. It fit the news format. And, for me to say that, you know it had to be good. :)

AN 106.7 does have a quality product but in the long run I think staying with the TOC/AGH hits would have been better for ratings and money.

And you'd be wrong. Within 4 months, news was already outbilling the oldies format and ratings have been steadily creeping higher. It may not be a perfect format, but it's working.

Out billing maybe, not that difficult with more inventory, 10-12 minutes an hour with music, 20 or so w AN, however, expenses are WAY UP, very expensive format to operate and the ratings are still not at 50% of where they were prior to the flip

One of the chief advantages of the all news format IS higher inventory, and the ratings game has to be a slow and steady process. Point is: "oldies" at the moment are 70's and 80's... as far as advertisers are concerned the Beach Boys, Chuck Berry and Beatles audience is just as dead as Glenn Miller, Gershwin, Sousa and Beethoven. The Dickey's wouldn't have flipped the station if they didn't see dollar signs.
