INNER CITY BROADCASTING BOUGHT OUT

I heard alotta goods and bads about Inner City throughout the years. But i always loved when they owned hip hop outlets like WBLS (pre UAC), WWDM (pre UAC) and WJMI because they always were programmed so much better than CC or R1 stations.

Anytime theres an aquisition, this can only go one of 2 ways. They will take their investments and maintain the integrity of the stations, or they will become cheap and cost cutting and become bland like most other corporate clusters across the country.

Time will only tell......

So now they have stations in Pheniox, San Franscio and the big apple New York City. I wonder if they will pick up any stations in the near future maybe more Emmis stations?

Who knows they'll probably buy out KBLX up north(San Fransico to be exact)

Yeah, let's hope they don't take the Cumulus route. I hear alot of the Citadel programmers are trying to get out. I've always loved The Big DM...but they need to start streaming for real. I can hear them sometimes in certain parts of Charlotte, sound good. I love UAC, I'm too grown for all that kiddie hop. I heard Hot 103.9 Columbia's numbers are looking real nice since they added more R&B. They were getting beat down for years.

Well Magic is also buying other stations that are not just Urban formats which makes them different from Radio One. In Pheniox they purchased 3 stations with different formats so Im sure Magic knows what hes doing. I never heard anything negative about his past investments.

Mac, I respectfully disagree about the Big DM. I recieve them 24/7 from my location just south of the QC. Worse of all are the 12 minute commercial sweeps, twice, and I swear, sometimes three times an hour. Completely negates any enjoyment you'd get from listening. The two daily syndicated programs have wiped out DM's hertitage position as ultra community focused. Im sure the crazy commercial load is an attempt to cover for the other unprofitable stations(not necessarily in Columbia--I'm sure several of those stations are doing ok).

The Big DM's whole weekday lineup is either syndicated or voicetracked outside middays. Mel DeVonne is syndicated, overnights voicetracked. All but 2 weekenders are voicetracked. I still enjoy their variety of music & the stop sets are no longer than 7 minutes. They use a couple different clocks, :20 & :50 middays & nights, overnights :10 & :40, weekends :35 & :50 for the stop sets, that might be throwing u off. Bills got to be payed somehow.

Ha, I'd say the bills are being paid. I just tuned in at 7:50 PM and listened to a 9 and a half minute commercial set. I'll keep it tuned and wait for the next commercial break. I agree, I really like the music variety, but the commercials are killers. I didn't know Mel Devonne was on DM--no evidence of him so far tonight.

The Big DM started their next commercal sweep at 8:13 PM which concluded at exactly 8:25. Twelve minutes! No sign of a DJ, live, syndicated, or VT.

Barbara Taylor is on tonight & was on yesterday (Friday & Saturday). Mel DeVonne is the host of The Quiet Storm Sun-Thurs 7pm-12am. I've listened before & timed it, I've never heard 9.5 minutes. It may be with the jock talk & promos. I know the actual commercials aren't that long. Are u sure you're not just looking at the yes logs? I'll give them a listen later.

I'd forgotten DeVonne is on Sun-Thurs, and yes, Ms. Taylor did come on about 8:30 after being absent for the previous hour. I feel for her, having been a big part of the station during it's heyday and now being reduced to this. Maybe if DM reduced the number of "male enhancement" spots that play in every commercial break they could reduce their load a little. Still, I invite you to more closely monitor the station, and keep track of the breaks. I think you'll be amazed.

U were right about one of them. The break at 20 was like 8 1/2 minutes long, the one at 50 was 6 minutes. They need to break that up a little more. Maybe 3 stop sets? Yeah, BT that's my girl. She was at CBS Radio WBAV & WPEG for something like 20 years.

Dam that's a shame to hear about the DM being syndicated and VT'd.
They were one of my FAVORITE Urban Mainstreams and was wiping out Hot 1039 but once they bought 1039 i saw both stations numbers shift UPward.

But being a powerhouse signal and a heritage station along with having such a heavy load of spots, you'd think they wouldn't have made it such a cheap outlet. Sad to hear (since I haven't listened to them since the switch to UAC)

I'm not really too surprised. If you've ever been to Columbia u know it's still country as hell. I asked one of my contacts who worked up there & she said one reason they had to load more inventory into the first stop set is bc at the top of the hour the system they're using will drop anything from the previous hour that hasn't aired & it was dropping spots, so they had to make sure they fit a song in after the commercial sweep. They're a diary market so they still believe in that 'quarter hour maintenence' nonsense.

Hot 103.9 was getting killed the past couple years until recently. They didn't top 100.1 The Beat until they dropped Big Boy for Rickey Smiley & added more R&B. Their numbers are looking alot better.

I'm personally an Urban AC man myself. Grown & sexy.

I remember when WGCI used to do 7min stopsets. Horrible.

And yes Big Boy i think has been the biggest hiphop flop morning syndication. East coast vibe just does not work in the South.

I'm older now but very much into current hip hop still.

7 and 9 minute stopsets are nothing compared to up to 15 minute stopset that WPGC and V-103 used to have after both stations would go 'commercial-free' for certain periods of time during the day. As a matter of fact, during the 5:00AM hour WPGC used to have 2 nearly 20-25 minute stopset to make up for the lack of stop sets due to their "18 Jamz in the Row" they would do throughout the day otherwise :D. I remember WPGC would only spin like 2-3 songs at the most in each half hour of the 5AM hour back then. CBS stopped this practice of long stopsets with both stations after they both switched to the PPM system of ratings.

I'm glad our CBS stations here in Charlotte never tried that. Like KRS One said....self destruction, you're headed for self destruction with ratings killers like that. Although it is overnights, doesn't really count.

Getting mad WJMI cant connect to webcast for a few days now. did they cut off the streaming ??? i will be VERY mad to lose this station in my lineup
