iPhone vs "Smart Phone" in News Reports -- Sloppy!

On Thursday I heard a report on KING5 about a new WSDOT app available for iPhones and Androids which allows a user to download traffic maps, ferry schedules, etc. Cool stuff!

But when it was reported several times Friday on KIRO-FM's newscasts, they just called it a new app available "for your iPhone" and closing the report by saying it's available from the iTunes stores. No mention of Android.

That's very sloppy reporting from KIRO. Had I not heard the report on KING5 (or read it at the P-I's website), I would have made the clear assumption that it was for iPhones only.

If the allotted news segment is too short for adding the words "and Androids" to your report, then just use the term "smart phones". To do otherwise -- particularly when it's so clearly part of WSDOT's press release http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/News/2010/09/1_mobileapps.htm -- shows favoritism of one trademarked brand name over another.

Wow, who peed in your cornflakes this morning? Lighten up, Francis...er, I mean David.

It was probably a sin of omission, not "favoritism".

Hmmm David you clearly have your undies in a bunch over this, as an Android user I have to wonder if your panties would have been in such a wad if it was iPhone that omitted from the story...

Maybe Steve Jobs secretly owns stock in KIRO and they are loyal to him alone?

Take a sip of coffee and take a deep breath, they check the ferry schedule on your Android knowing all is right with the world...

Oh BTW - the WSDOT Android app has been out for a couple of months now. Apple just approved the iPhone app. That could also be the reason for the alleged "favoritism".

I think you make a great point. I have smart phone and I assume when I hear i-Phone app it's not for me ... don't even bother searching the market unless I REALLY am interested in the app.
