On Thursday I heard a report on KING5 about a new WSDOT app available for iPhones and Androids which allows a user to download traffic maps, ferry schedules, etc. Cool stuff!
But when it was reported several times Friday on KIRO-FM's newscasts, they just called it a new app available "for your iPhone" and closing the report by saying it's available from the iTunes stores. No mention of Android.
That's very sloppy reporting from KIRO. Had I not heard the report on KING5 (or read it at the P-I's website), I would have made the clear assumption that it was for iPhones only.
If the allotted news segment is too short for adding the words "and Androids" to your report, then just use the term "smart phones". To do otherwise -- particularly when it's so clearly part of WSDOT's press release http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/News/2010/09/1_mobileapps.htm -- shows favoritism of one trademarked brand name over another.
