iPod Radio

All this talk about MoVin has got me thinking... a note to all aspiring GMs. What do you think about iPod radio?

JACK, Movin, DAVE... all those "cost-efficient" formats would have to step aside. Fully automated (hell, if you can't beat 'em, join 'em) but fully listener supported. Listeners download their own iPod list into the system's Web site and the PC plays them at random. If CC or CBS won't do it, let's make a pact on this blog, kids.

Thoughts? ;D

No Sony is not IPOD capatible, and must meet stringent enforcement of all laws and rules involving ascap, bmi, Riaa, and local boy scout troop 675.

Interesting idea, but by the time the copyright lawyers got finished with it - it would never work.

An idea I had last night. I was streaming Z88.3 Orlando to my computer. I had to go downstairs for a while, and put on my little FM modulator. I just happened to use - 88.3! Now, it dawned on me somebody driving by and happening to hear that would think he just netted quite a DX catch!

But the idea came in my mind - eclectic radio. Repeat - at audience request on the web site - streams from stations in another markets. Put a Z-88 up against KLTY, or red 104 up against KAAM, have a REAL rock station from somewhere. I'd personally like to put KKOB up against 106.1 KISS FM and see how a REAL top-40 would fare in the market.

After a time - I bet there would start to be a concensus among listeners - a favorite would emerge based on majority vote - and the station could either become a full time affiliate of the parent, or the format reproduced locally. If a group owned several stations, they could flip one to the most popular format and start the process over again.

If If If...

What is a walkman? I seem to remember hearing something about one when I bought my Apple ][.

Due to the simple FCC censorship B.S., my iPod playlist would NEVER make it on the air ... nothin like hearing a lot of Jay-Z and Marilyn Manson uncut on broadcast radio.

Besides hard core radio enthusiasts, who listens to radio stations because of the jocks? I listen because of the music first. Well, actually I am a sports talk fan and that format most definitely needs jocks.

My point being, does it really make sense to go spend 100s of thousands of dollars on an air-staff when a big chunk of the population doesn't care and actually ignores the jock until the music plays again?

If I like the Beatles, I'm gonna listen to KLUV, not because Debi Diaz is on the air.
If I like Dave Matthews, I'll listen to Mix.
If I like Elton John, then lite fm it is.

Is that a stupid way to look at it?

Hey - I like Debi Diaz! She is NICE! I've met her at some remotes.

I wouldn't say it was "stupid". I would dsay it is very short sighted however. In todays climate, your view point is unfortunately correct, mostly. The Dj,announcer is suppose to entertain, not just be a bridge between songs. Your Bo and Jims, Wolfman Jacks, Terry Dorsey, and the entire KVIL staff from 1975-1985 knew how to entertain. That is THE role of the announcer (dj) not just read some lame written by a sales person/public service director liner card. You create, you become a character, you entertain your listeners. Unfortunately as stated before. you sold spots around a program, not program around spots as you have today. Times change but regions haven't.people want to hear their local flavor, but the corps feel one size fits all. This waters down the role of the announcer,no time to be creative, hardly any BITS that are truly funny. So eliminate that so you can have a 9-12 min spot sweep. Listenership is down and "spun" to make it seem like Ipods, the internet, and satellite are competitiors. They are,but radio corps forced the listeners out, because the entertainment value has decreased. Listening to todays announcer is akin to listening to your 8th grade science teacher talking about why birds do it,etc. The announcer should be an entertainer, not a salesperson.

PLEX, you are right on... just thought an idea to embrace the way of our fair business would be how we get those beloved CON-sultants out of a job.

Hell, I was one of those "entertainers" for years... no cared, so off I go into VO work. Hey, at least I get paid. ;D
