No, WTOP has always been the strong performer. On AM, it got share numbers as good or better. 1500 may not get a great signal into some fringe areas but it reaches areas where most people are. KYW, on the other hand, is worthless in Bucks County.

As good or better than what?

WTOP before the move to 103.5 got nearly half its ratings from an FM rimshot on 107.7 in Warrenton, VA. 1500 is worthless to the west of DC.

Hope IQ doesn't fall for Larry Mendte's manipulating his return to the station. He is trying to label the morning guy Lionel as liberal, he sure as hell isn't liberal, and begging people to contact IQ to push them into bringing him back. How pathetic. Lionel and Mendte are both a mistake for that station.

They have no idea what to do. He says they approached him to come back. These people have no idea what to do. It's amazing.

Whatever he is now, Lionel was the token late night liberal at WOR. He was a liberal when he went to Air America Radio during their last days. Disc Jockeys play the music they are told to play. Talk Show take the side they are supposed to take. Conservative talk radio is like an all day Republican party infomercial. Lionel needs the work.

As the old saying goes....freedom of speech only exists for the people that OWN the station. Same goes for the print media and TV. As far as the Disc Jockey's, it's a joke, more like automatons.
 
I have to say, this station has been on the air for approximately a year and it gets more 'buzz' from this site than just about any other on this board.

The "insiders" on this board seem to think that this station will not last and/or be sold. I am not an insider so I have no idea and cannot legitimately challenge those who have an informed view of what could happen.

As a listener (and you can check out my prior posts), I like this station cause its voices are aligned more with my views but also because I think the hosts are enjoyable. I've have listened to some hosts who are on the air either locally or nationally and not everyone is as good as the hosts on IQ in what they do. It is an art that has been perfected by these hosts no matter how you feel about their viewpoints.

If IQ does go away and/or the syndicated hosts go away in Philly, then I have plenty of options to find them. With that said, I would welcome different views on the radio and the one poster who noted all of the so-called conservative stations has a point. Maybe it also says that a certain genre (conservative talk) is successful on some varying level in this day and age.

Maybe 60-70 years ago, this board would have had a lot of chatter about how certain radio hosts were abandoning radio for TV. Obviously, those genres no longer dominate radio. Talk radio is a big genre now and, as a radio fan in general, I appreciate its success much like I appreciated the success of "All News All the Time" and "The Home of Rock & Roll". I'm just a radio fan and I look forward to the next developments in the medium that is not going away anytime soon.

It's curious, some stations get a lot of buzz and some don't. Some stations seem to have more people talking about them here than actual listeners. I have no idea what makes certain stations buzz worthy. Looking back, before IQ, the top buzzers were:

WCOJ
WVLT
WILM
WSJO
WCAU
 
I haven't listened to the radio station in about a month since my business ended in Trenton. However, I do remember Larry Mendte on there and I thought he was horrible and sounded like he was reading off a script. To be honest, they lost me after the morning because I want to hear local opinions. Lionel isn't even local either. They have said before he does his show from New York. I'm not going to get into whether the station will last. I hope it does, but since it seems like it isn't growing you have to wonder.
 
Any links to what you said about Mendte trying to get back on the station? He and Lionel are essentially co-workers at PIX11 in NYC so it would be a little weird for him to start drama between them. I could see it being a stunt with Mendte getting the morning show eventually- Lionel does the early early news starting at 4:30 on WPIX so he might want to ditch the IQ gig to catch some shut-eye (or breakfast) afterward instead of jumping right behind a microphone. It's unfortunate as I do enjoy Lionel's perspective (left, right, whichever- they're all scheming against the average citizen and no longer can we sit idly by, diddling our smartphones).

It's really encouraging to see people having hope for an engaging, spectrum-covering, locally based talk station. There's no excuse for a major city like Philly not having one.
 
It's on his Facebook page called The Larry Mendte Show. ( for his IQ show which he never took down)
He has several different Facebook pages trying to create buzz that will bring him back on IQ.
That's just sad and pathetic.
Maybe IQ should stop grabbing what they perceive as the easy cheap fix, and actually seek out some local talent. Not some blow hard who as already failed at his attempt to do radio.
Radio is spontaneous, not a scripted media like anchoring. He is a know it all with questionable ethics. Asking people to hassle IQ to bring him back only adds to that perception.
Get off your butts IQ and find some actual local talent.
 
Other stations that get a lot of mention on these boards are WPHT, and KYW.
WYSP used to get more mention when it was around.

Oh, how I miss those days. Now without the toilet humor, wouldn't it be great to see a format like that back on the air? ALL local hosts, ALL kinds of topics... essentially NJ 101.5 but less political. I don't know about you all but I'm certainly feeling political fatigue as of late.

Edit- a big aspect of that format that deserves credit was the emphasis on callers. Almost all the shows were heavily caller driven. It's something important that you just can't get from syndicated windbags.

Which era? I assume one of the post Stern eras. BC the talk era with Stern was all syndicated from 6a-7p. It was a great lineup, Stern, Don & Mike, Opie and Anthony, but none of it was local.

I assume you mean the Kidd Chris era?

From my experience, 106.9 has a way stronger signal that 98.1 does. I've picked up WWIQ in the Hudson Valley of New York (Middletown area)...in fact, it's the only Philly station that I've ever picked up up there (except for WSTW from Wilmington). But I don't think strictly moving KYW to FM would be a good idea. That 1060 signal is extremely strong at night. I went to college in Oswego, NY (on the shore of Lake Ontario), for the past 4 years, and I was always able to listen to 1060 clearly at night. You can't do that with FM.
 
I know that, but the point is that 1060 AM can cover their whole listening area. I doubt 98.1 or 106.9 would come in well in Wildwood or Mount Pocono.
