Is 92.3 NOW tweaking it's format?

I've been sampling the station over the last few days and they have a cleaner, more polished sound. While always a rythmic leaning CHR they appear to lean more heavily on EDM and dance than before. I hear many CHR dance hits in rotation as well as a "New York worthy" lunch time mix.
Not bad I must say.....sounds more like what you would have expected a CHR station to do several years ago to compete with Z100, although with the current format it may take more away from KTU and X96.3.

Seems like they did some rebranding with their new WNOW calls.

I don't know if it's NOW tweaking their format, or Z100 doing that, or both, but to my ear they sound a bit different from one another -- with NOW, as you said, sounding somewhat more rhythmic. Not a big difference but maybe you're right.

92.3 Now has always been more rhythmic leaning than Z. Since the CHR format as a whole is now more pop/rock friendly than it's been in the past few years, the differences may be becoming more pronounced. Adding more EDM/dance would definitely be a good move in order for them to distinguish themselves, and Clear Channel's recent move to put Dance in Boston may be an incentive for that.

I didn't necessarily mean to compare the difference between NOW and Z as we know that NOW has always been a rythmic CHR and Z not.

NOW just seems more polished. It's playlist less tight plus more EDM and dance. Gone are the days of the second rate dj's like Chunky and Buster.....or so it seems.

Yeah, I grew to like Chunky as well. And perhaps more importantly, a number of my female friends in their early 20's loved him and were upset when he was let go. Love or hate him, he was one thing that helped the station stand out next to Z100.

Seems similar to what CBS has done here in Boston with Amp 103.3...very rhythmic. Almost like our own version of WKTU.

With a 2.0 in the ratings I think they should become CBS Sports Radio 92.3

Anything is better than what they are "now." They're too low on the dial for the average teenager (if any even still own radios) to reach past Z100 and KTU. NYC does not need 3 CHR stations. It's like having three McDonalds on the same street, with same exact specials, all at the same exact time. One needs to go!

KTU needs to go like Pulse music. 92.3 needs to go country or alternative (not as K-Rock that was a disaster, more like Radio 104.5 from Philly).

KTU is CHR we already have Z as CHR and they're owned by the same company. Make KTU dance like Pulse was it'll not make it as much of an overlap.

Isn't CBS Sports Radio set to debut on 660?

92.3 Now was ill-conceived from the beginning. Wrong station at the wrong time. Then is when WFAN-FM should have been created.

KTU is #5 in the 18-49 demo. No need for them to flip formats. WNOW is the more likely candidate.

Still not gonna stop him from complaining about a lack of a modern rock station, no matter how many times we say how KTU is successful.

That said, I still don't know what's up with them keeping 92.3 the way it is, given it's lack of ratings in every way imaginable. The only thing I can think of is pride, since that and FM sports talk seems to be CBS' two favorite formats right now.

According to this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tJzjMmFcnGY&list=UUoh4jVyjNKtu80yYk3B7mlQ&index=3), 92.3 still bills well despite its sagging ratings, so this guy believes they'll either sell WINS or Fresh. Does anyone have any stats for this? But even if that's true, I don't see why CBS would choose any other station to sell (buying New Rock 101.9 puts them over the limit). Fresh does well in the ratings and WINS is too much of a heritage station. Funny how New Rock did better than 92.3 with zero advertising and yet some people will give NOW a free pass for their lagging numbers. That said, KTU is fine the way it is.

Buying 101.9 didn't put them over the limit, no station needs to be sold. It's been covered over and over again.

No, by owning WCBS-TV and WLNY they were at the cumulative limit for tv+radio ownership in a market before buying 101.9. I still haven't heard the presumed status of converting WLNY into something cable-only even though they now officially run 101.9.

CBS will continue to run WLNY. They argued that under the rules, WLNY really isn't in the NY market, since it's primary coverage contour doesn't fully cover the NY Market and the NY station's primary contours do not reach the city of license of WLNY, Riverhead NY.

Which when you think about it, Riverhead is 10 miles farther east than New Haven, Ct. It really isn't a NY market station any more than one in New Haven is.
