I just did..Average age is 31 years old. So what's your point here..These people don't listen to "Oldies"..Not the "Oldies" I listen to..ie: Grass Roots, Beach Boys, BTO, Styxx, Rascals...Qustion? Are these figures that the government spews out inclusive of the college students that are "parttime Residents"? According to the Census Bureau there are 6 universities, colleges or professional educational outlets in Raleigh..If so, That's where the demo's come from..If not, they are bogus!

Let me BUTT-inski to this thread. 2 things. First. Oldies is not a 35-64 format. Oldies is a 55 to Dead format. Not in the game, kaput, goneski, get over it, sayonara, c'ya, buh-bye, adios amigo, put a fork in it. Second. Never mention the Band Styx in the same breath as The Rascals, Grassroots or Beach Boys.
Stations that play music mostly from pre-71 would be appealing to people 55+...not even in the 25-54 demo any more. I hate to say it...the Sixties era is now Music of Your Life and if I was a 16 year old teenager in 1965 diggin on The Beatles and The Supremes---then I am 58 today, 7 years away from Social Security or I might already be dead...Advertisers aren't interested in dead people. The Beatles are played in elevators and funeral homes.
"Oldies" for a 35 year old would be, let's see (hold on I flunked Math)...14 years ago they were 21...gee that would be 1993....so let's really be daring and talk about when that 35 year old was 16....uh oh 1988. Go back 28 years for a 44 year old--we're talking ancient music here in 1979.

Curtis Media DID have a 70s/80s station in Y102-9 until Spring of 2005. It was flipped b/c it didn't do well. I will add that it WAS signal challenged until recently.
Anyway... the 70s/80s format was flipped in favor of a 60s/70s "Super Hits" (oldies) format, which targets P35-64, with a core of P45-54.
The format is still strong.. but takes local mgmt who "get it", that it's a 35-64 NOT a 25-54 format. LOTS of local ad $$$ to be gotten.

I do not believe college students are included in the Census. Also not part of a market's pop.
I worked at WTRG it's last five years on the air, and programmed it the last year. I have a clue about "oldies" and what it IS and what it needs to be to do well.
And the oldies format is not dead just b/c some suits say it is.
If you've noticed, CBS Radio, the country's second largest company (revenue) is getting rid of it's failed "Free FM" formats and bringing back some heritage stations, and their formats. KFRC San Fran is one of them.
I say WCBS-FM will be oldies by this time next year, if not earlier. It was Top 5 in billing in the U.S. when it was flipped. THe JACK format is failing., and worse, losing money like crazy.
There's still $$$ in "oldies"
