"Is HD Radio/IBOC ...a fraud and a farce?"

It would be a "fraud" or "farce" only if it didn't work (look up the definition!) Once my antenna was aligned, I have (after many hours of listening from a deep fringe location, with an indoor antenna) NEVER experienced a dropout. Not a single time.

Some "farce".

boy wonder why "radio and records" removed the digital radio section from its news section..... hd and satrad both gone.............??

wonder what the motive is.....sad

interesting move, go vnu/blackstone/cc online, wonder if its all about the internet this new year......

You're kidding, right? "Once my antenna was aligned?" How many average radio users are going to go to that kind of trouble to make a radio work? The conditioning provided by decades of open-the-box-put-in-the-batteries-or-plug-it-in-and-turn-it-on answers that question with a big fat goose egg. Buyers of these radios will do what they've been doing for the past few decades...and when they can't receive all the signals their old radios got, the HD radios will be returned as defective.

Ya gotta remember: We who post here are radio geeks or radio professionals. We are not the average listener, who just wants it to work without putting in a whole lot of effort. Whether that's a good thing or not, it's the current reality. Having to fiddle with antennas is, whether we like it or not, a step backwards, and a step which the average Joe won't bother with.

Wrong, again!
I looked up the definitions, of "fraud" and "farce" in various sources, and found no such phrase, as "only if it didn't work". (At all?)
Hawking an inferior, destructive, unnecessary, expensive, product or service, by deception, seems to fit the definitions of "fraud" and "farce". Hybrid HD Radio certainly fits.

Here are just a few of the wild, deceptive claims made for HD Radio by proponents:

The Same Unmatched Fidelity as Your Digital Music

FM stations now with CD-quality sound
AM stations now with FM-quality sound
Crystal-clear reception with no audio distortion
New artists and new personalities
New genres, new music from abroad
New kinds of programs you’ve never listened to before
New experimental formats that no one has ever heard
New channels to play more of what you like to hear
More talk and music from the stations you’re plugged into
More complete sets and more full albums
More in-depth interviews
More lengthy talk and more detailed news
All digital, all the time
No hiss, distortion or station drop off
