Howard Stern Lashes Out at Some Fans

NEW YORK — Howard Stern is angry more fans haven't followed him to satellite radio. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the 52-year-old shock jock lashes out at those of his fan base who haven't made the transition to Sirius Satellite Radio.

In January, Stern moved his popular and bawdy morning show to the subscription satellite radio provider.

"I was just at my psychiatrist and I said, `I just got great news: We hit the 4 million mark. And I'm angry. It should be 20 million,'" Stern says in the magazine, on newsstands Monday.

"It's insulting to me that everyone hasn't come with me. I take it personally," he says.

"I want to say to my audience ... `You haven't come with me yet? How dare you? We're up to wild, crazy stuff, the show has never sounded better. You cheap bastard!'"

In February, CBS Radio, formerly known as Infinity Broadcasting, filed a lawsuit against Stern for improperly using airtime to promote his new show on Sirius.

Stern has claimed the lawsuit is without merit.

He just expected EVERYONE to follow him. He's a bit dissapointed that he doesn't have as many listeners as he would like. I told someone on the Stern Fan Network, the problem isn't the $13 monthly subscription fee. The problem is the overpriced radios! Lower the price of the Radios and the subscriber Numbers will double or even triple.

I thought his terrestrial radio audience was more like 8-12 million.

He's been talking about an article/survey that says 30% of his listeners have already come over to Sirius or plan to. So if you figure he had 10 million listeners on terrestrial radio, that's 3 million listeners who signed up with Sirius exclusively for Stern.

SIRIUS................SIRIUS......................SIRIUS..............................................................SIRIUS....................................................................

Any publicity is good publicity. And Howard is milking it for all it's worth. Very smart move on Howard's part as that may just add more listeners to the 4 mill Sirius already has.

you are so right...xm radios are much cheaper....i have been looking into buying a sirius radio and am shocked by the higher prices....but im not sure if that's the reason for lower numbers....

He's got to bitch, that's what he does best. The smoke has cleared on the Stern show move and the numbers aren't pretty. Now if they were able to break down the numbers to "Actual Listeners", the stern show would have a stroke. 4 millions listeners, that's funny. The show no longer has 3 or 4 stations in a given market to compete with, there's at least 101 plus. I'd pay good money to see the actual numbers of listeners(cue Arbitron jingle here).
Granted, the Stern Promotional campaign on Infinity work wonders for Sirius subscriptions, but now reality has sunk in and it's a little disappointing.
They've pounded their promotional propaganda for sooo long, they started to believe it themselves. It only took 6 week for people on the purchase fence, to see that it's the same show, different medium. The post regarding receiver costs has some validity, but if the Stern show really had cutting edge entertainment, the price of a receiver would be a non issue. I've seen sale priced units as low as 49 bucks(after rebate). I love my move to Sirius, thanks for the tip Howard, but everytime I check in, same old-same old.
Now back to the music!

Yet again, more Howie-math. Now Howie's thought process has him thinking that he is responsible for 3/4 of the SIRIUS subscription base. But then again, that is under the speculation that he STILL HAD 10 million listeners.

Let me get this straight...a guy who ADMITS he's done sub-par terrestrial radio for the last 10 year is amazed that people haven't followed him over to sub-par satellite radio?

The "sheep" listeners didn't follow him, so now they are "cheap" listeners.

Howard doesn't have 4 million listeners

There are 4 million subscribers to Sirius, right? OK, more than one person may listen at a time, but how do you know? If there are 4 million subscribers, is everyone of them listening to Howard? Then just shut down the other channels from 6a-11a Eastern. How many listeners does he actually have?

Exactly my point! If this wake up call has ANY positive results, maybe it will be the return of The Stern Show of old and cool the jets of this bitch fest that has been going on for years. BUILD IT FUNNY....THEY WILL COME!

The AP took the quote from EW out of context, I think Stern was speaking more to his never being satisfied than lashing out at people who haven't signed up for Sirius. The EW writer refers to Stern as laughing while making the quote listed above, as if it's a joke.

Good call, XM has ZERO buzz on any level. Stern is getting paid a ton and he's being a good soldier for Sirius.

BUILD IT FUNNY....THEY WILL COME!> Wake up call?? (Edited for personal attack.) The guy has had plenty of people come over to sirius, and the man puts out a great show everyday. This is a sirius forum so im guessing that at least 90% of us posting here are sirius fans and listeners. So let me know how having Howard Stern on sirius is a bad thing. The best you O@A rejects can come up with is argue over how many millions of listeners Howard brought over. Look at the impact O@A made over at xm! Ha, they didnt do nothing noda, zip, zero!! Get over it, Howard is the man and no matter what you think about the man you cant take away anything from his historic radio career!

Thanks, genius

I'm not an O&A reject. They suck. Howard is entertaining. Explain to me how all 4 million Sirius subscribers are listening to him. Go.

I never said that Howards move to sirius was a BAD thing for sirius. As a sirius fan and subscriber, I'm glad he's here. His impact on subscribership is tremendous and not one person, other than Howard, in this medium could have more of a positive impact on subscribership. To assume that anyone who is bored with the Stern show is an O & A fan, is about as intelligent as Wendy the retard. Who cares what impact O & A made at xm, this is a sirius board as you mentioned yourself Wendy. I personally think that all talk radio sucks. And bitch fest talk radio sucks even more. I loved Howard when he was funny, he isn't anymore. Everytime I check in, he's in another bitch session with either his staff, guests or past injustice; Les, f.c.c. equipment etc. etc etc.
Thank you Sirius for the great music channels. And thank you Howard for helping to keep this service alive.

If you need to create a buzz, rather than standing on your content, maybe your not all that. With all of the money they are paying Stern, I would expect him to be a good soldier. He's not doing them any favors. He owes it to the company to perform.

I think the key word there is historic. He just isn't AS relevant as he was or wants to be.

He's still the most relevant broadcaster today.
