or are there a s**tload of radio billboards up now? I think it has been YEARS since I've personally seen so many. Do you think they make someone change their dial? Talk amongst yourselves.

I think they make folks sample. If they stay depends on the product they find when they get there.

I wonder if daypart specific billboards are good marketing. If it's 2 PM does a purely morning show board make sense?

Rock 103 has some up solely because of 98.1 having D&Z boards. The Buzz has had theirs up for a while, as has 93X. Both WMFS and WMBZ had a bit of a cume increase in phase 1, so they may have helped with awareness of both stations. 98.1, however, is falling apart in the AM. The Wake-Up Crew had a HUGE month on 103. It's simple, after you try something once, if you aren't pleased with the product, all the advertising in the world won't help. You need to get the product right first, before you advertise.

I've often wondered why radio stations with strong signals like Rock 103 and FM100 don't go outside of Memphis to locations on I-40 like Brinkley, Ark and Jackson, TN and put up billboards inviting listeners to tune in. I've often thought billboards in locations like these saying "You're now in range of our signal" would draw listeners in. Generally at a place like Brinkley, you're at the point where Memphis and Little Rock stations begin to get listenable without having to worry about multi-pathing or fading.

"get the product RIGHT FIRST, before you ADVERTISE"
That was one of the most intelligent things that I have heard in a long time DE...Very well said, and should be on the office wall of every GM and Marketing type in the business. As for the billboards, the syndicated morning show 93X carries requires in the contract that they put up billboards. Most likely that is the case with 94.1 and Kraddic in the morning.

King, you should stop spreading your antiquated radio management theories, OK?

/sarcasm off now

Thank you, Rick! I somehow get smarter when I stop drinking before noon!

My immediate thought about the profusity of billboards is... "Clear Channel Outdoors" (freebies, or at most cheapies) much like the reason you see the :10's on TV for CC stations). And, of course, if THEY have billboards, then WE need billboards...

It's been a while since we've seen so many different ones, I think, and you reason makes perfect sense. That, and the fore-mentioned fact that these syndicated shows require them as part of the deal.

See you Sunday! ;) GO TIGERS!

Another reason you're probably seeing these billboards is because we're about to enter the spring ratings season, the most important time of year in radio.

Why?!
Because they could give a hairy rat's arse if anyone outside their ratings area listens or not!
Big agencies that handle ad accounts for companies like Coke or Clearasil could care less if anyone in "Roosterpoot, TN or Ark." is listening or not.
They want to see the numbers for the main market area. If those are decent enough you'll get a buy.
How big that buy will be and what they'll pay for that buy depends on how good those numbers are.
It's all about ratings, man.
You don't think radio companies really care how many actual PEOPLE listen, do you?
Bwah, hah hah hah!!! (evil, sinister laugh)
