Is it possible for a Radio Station that doesn't play the same songs over & over?

If you work in an office with people who listen to the radio all day, you'll notice its the same garbage songs over and over and over and over. I've listened to 94.9's morning show since JV got back sometimes they play the same song 3 times in an hour. It's HORRIBLE. I'd rather listen to him talk than the same trash music they will play once he's done. Would it be possible to have a radio station that actually plays new artists and does not play the same limited 10 songs all day constantly? Rolling in the Deep makes me want to jump off a bridge.

Re: Is it possible for a Radio Station that doesn't play the same songs over & over?

This is what web "radio" is for...

Re: Is it possible for a Radio Station that doesn't play the same songs over & over?

Here's the issue:

There are far more people who listen in their cars to radio than there are people listening for 8 to 10 hours a day in an office. You can't create any radio station that completely satisfies both audiences.

Those in cars want to hear "a hit" they like when they turn the radio on, or they go away.

Those in offices never want to hear a repeat.

You can't completely satisfy both groups.

Re: Is it possible for a Radio Station that doesn't play the same songs over & over?

So people are stupid enough that when they get in their car everyday to tune into the radio, they don't mind hearing the same damn songs over and over? Even on my short 30 minute commute to work. I hear the same damn songs over and over every day. So people are ok with this? Trust me, I'm sure everybody want's more variety, you CAN satisfy everybody. Not everybody is a moron that needs to hear "hits". "Hits" are force fed trash by radio, anything can be a hit if it's good music. A hit is not something manufactured like what we get now.

Re: Is it possible for a Radio Station that doesn't play the same songs over & over?

It may be news to some, but Top 40 radio has been playing the same few new hit songs over and over and over again since the format was invented in the '50s. The average person listens to radio less than two hours a day, so if it is a proven hit song it can be played in an extreme rotation for months without annoying the "average" listener. Sad, sad, sad but true.

Have you tried KOIT 96.5? Their format is designed for extended listening in offices, etc. While they also repeat they do have a longer playlist and they do throw in some new songs from time to time.

Re: Is it possible for a Radio Station that doesn't play the same songs over & over?

Only if KOIT would shorten their bumpers. Just say "KOIT 96.5" and start the song, not "KOIT, blah blah blah" that goes on for 30 seconds.

A station that was really bad at repetition was the old KARA of the late 90s/earlier 00s. If I hear Dancing Queen or Hey Soul Sister one more time......

This is precisely what I can't stand about KOIT. It drives me crazy! Their imaging is also old and severly outdated.

But, "It's the one station, everyone can agree on...KOIT 96.5, Kay-Ohh-Eye-Tee"

Re: Is it possible for a Radio Station that doesn't play the same songs over & over?

I don't know if you read my posts, (couple months ago I said the same thing).... You can listen to Elton John's "Rocket Man" 5 times per day, or even more. That's call the magic of FM Radio. They playing the same old trash over and over and over again.

Radio is worth listening in car. Because when you at home there are better alternatives than listen to FM radio. Or there are many choices listen to music mp3 players, Pandora (internet radio). Satellite radio....

Re: Is it possible for a Radio Station that doesn't play the same songs over & over?

I agree that stations repeat-repeat-repeat. It can be during the same day or the next day or during the week. I listen to multiple stations and include News/TALK format in the mix. They also repeat the news and talk. From there, I go to a MP3 player that never repeats.

Re: Is it possible for a Radio Station that doesn't play the same songs over & over?

If you google this you'll find most people hate the radio, you'd think if they want better numbers they should know better and play some new music more often. There are thousands of talented artists where you could play new songs every day. It would revive the failing sales and economy probably, let people who normally don't have much access to other outlets hear new artists. But no, they continue with this Radio 1, Clear Channel Trash of repetition.

Re: Is it possible for a Radio Station that doesn't play the same songs over & over?

Commercially sponsored radio is always going to stay in the 'safe zone', which assumes that most people only listen to the radio two hours a day and only want to hear a 'hit'. While there are plenty of those types of listeners, most people I know are looking for a much broader variety of not only songs, but genres as well. The issue is really that there are tons of genres and sub-genres that people listen to, but not nearly enough frequencies to cover them all...not to mention profitably. Sadly, that's why the reality is that commercial radio is always going to stay right in the middle of the 'safe zone' and won't ever really give the majority the music they really want. That's why I own an XM radio...not perfect, but a lot more variety. At least local news and sports stations are still good, but for music, not so much (personal exception: KCSM. Good Jazz!).

Re: Is it possible for a Radio Station that doesn't play the same songs over & over?

i listen to less and less radio .the reason is the repetiveness of the same songs.when WKLU indianapolis was a deep cuts station i listened to it for long periods of time.

i do not want to have to go the route of paying for satalite radio and internet radio is fine but i don`t listen to it as long either.

i am old school i want interesting radio on over the air stations.

Uh, you're going to argue with consistently good ratings, year in and year out? I'm not. It takes the right formula to consistently hit the mark, and KOIT's done it, even with the "severely outdated" imaging -- and maybe, just maybe because of it.

Re: Is it possible for a Radio Station that doesn't play the same songs over & over?

Anyone remember that station that came up and rivaled KMEL for a little while back in the early 2000s I believe? I heard KMEL's street team went there and threatened them and even beat up some of their staff causing them to eventually cave in and get bought out. They were actually how KMEL sounded back in the early 90s. much more variety of hip-hop & R&b and good Dj's. It's sad. I also can't see myself paying for radio, even if satellite, it's sad you have to actually pay to get good radio.

Re: Is it possible for a Radio Station that doesn't play the same songs over & over?

Given that there are no real dominant formats any more, I'm surprised no one is willing to take a chance/risk on a 'free format' old style AOR (where stations played 4-5 cuts off albums). You can get these stations in small vacation towns....but not in the big cities. I can't believe in places like the Bay Area a station like this couldn't be at least as successful as some of the stations playing the same old repetitive stuff.

Re: Is it possible for a Radio Station that doesn't play the same songs over & over?

My iPod has 4300 songs on it - no repeats. I can actually go for a couple of months without one repeat. I love it.

Not true. Most people like familiarity. They marry the same woman, live in the same place, drive the same car, eat the same food, and like the same music. Over and over. Pavlov noticed it more than a century ago. In radio, Top 40 pioneer Todd Storz went to a bar, and discovered most people played the same few songs in the jukebox over and over and over. Clint Eastwood made a movie 30 years ago about the woman who called in to the radio station every night wanting the DJ to "play Misty for me." I can give you thousands of stories like this. When was the last time you went to a concert by an artist you'd never heard of? If not, why would you want to hear an unknown song by an unknown artist on the radio? It's a turn-off.

This idea that radio people love to play the same songs over and over is also fiction. If YOU think it's boring, imagine what it's like for the DJ who has to sit there for a 5 hour shift every day playing the exact same songs. And he can't change the station. It's his job! But anyone in radio will tell you that the minute they diverge from the familiar, the ratings go down. People may say they like new music, but they really don't. Especially as they get older. Younger audiences, under 30, are more interested in new stuff. But once they get older, they fall into a routine, and that includes music.
