I feel the situation in Boston is a bit different, because Radio One sold the station to Entercom...and Entercom changed the format. Radio One didn't change the format.
If you read the Boston board, the sale of WILD-FM and format change has one certain [EDIT] contributor crying the blues that "minorities are getting screwed over."
[EDIT=name calling]
Doesn't matter that Entercom was the one to change the format of WILD-FM. Radio One knew damn well Entercom wasn't going to keep the station urban. Radio One is a business just like every other media company. Commitment to the community takes a back seat to the bottom line.
The topic of WILD-FM has little to to with the WUBA situation, but just to clarify. Entercom acquired the physical property of WILD-FM for $30 million. They did not acquire the intellectual property, and in fact, the sale paperwork did not even allow them to keep the call letters for any period of time. If you look at the case of Mega's former Boston station(s), WAMG/WLLH, the new ownership (J-Sports) acquired both the physical and intellectual property of the stations but acquired them with the intention of pulling the plug on Spanish tropical and launching "ESPN Boston". Quite different from the Radio One situation when it comes to "Who killed the old format?".
