Is it time for an alternative?

Actually Tangerine Dream and Kraftwerk have quite a following, despite the lack of airplay. I think that is their appeal, not being mainstream

Mainstream is what makes a commercial AM/FM profitable, not having a following. If "having a following" was all that's necessary for a format to flip to EDM, the artist in question have to be mainstream enough to have been played on the radio (or at least played SNL or licensed to car commercials or, in Mumford & Son's case, insurance companies.) Can you say that about Deadmau5 or Skrillex? I don't think so. I don't disagree that EDM would be a nice format this to market to have, but it's really not that viable. For one thing, your target demo wouldn't even be here twice a year (Coachella & Burning Man). I'd rather see a "free-form" oldies station playing Captain Beefheart and Frank Zappa. We haven't had one of those since KSTM, way back when.

I see your points, but I thought we were discussing Alternative? Ironically, I believe these types of artists are more appropriate on an alternative station than a mainstream one. Just a handfull of them....kinda like when The Edge (at one time) rotated Prodigy, Crystal Method, and Chemical Brothers. Besides, that's what True Alternative was...artists that had a following (i.e. The Cure or Sisters of Mercy played on 1060 KUKQ) but were ignored elsewhere.

In the 80's pet shop boys, depeche mode,go-go's, and b52's were played with dead milkmen,David Bowie, tear for fears, etc on alternative stations. The first set of groups mention sounded euro/techno but were played none the less. Anybody remember KEYX? What a cool station. Jonothan L.was on with his lopsided world way back in '86.

Lopsided World of L is still broadcasting in 2013, on KWSS-LP and Indie 103.1 in LA.

Nope. Never, actually. Though that Mandolin guy on those Geico ads reminds me of what I had originally pictured Marcus Mumford to look like. But you're probably referring to the American Family Insurance spots. Again, Nada.
