Is it time for the NFL's television rules to be overhauled?

If the team is playing at home no game can go opposite it on the SH network. So by default Buffalo, Baltimore, Atlanta, Miami and Indy MUST show a late FOX game. Boston, Cleveland, Oakland, and Nashville as the road teams CAN show a game opposite it but usually doesn't.
OKC is "cowtowning" for Kyler Murray who played at OU
Why would a home game rather than a road game create this situation? In the home market you could go to the game, but if the game is on the road you wouldn't be likely to do that.

Interesting. Has Boston ever gotten a Falcons game instead of a main or regional game because Matt Ryan went to Boston College? Or a game featuring any of the many teams Harvard alum Ryan Fitzpatrick has played for?

We get Texans games in Asheville because the QB for the Texans went to Clemson.

We get Falcons games too because their training camp is in the Upstate of South Carolina

Then throw in the confusion of teams on a bye. The Jets and San Francisco are on one this week. Miami and Detroit have a bye in Week 5.

It will be a treat to watch the Texans on Fox (NFC) this Sunday and next Sunday! Panthers in a couple of days and Falcons next week. It's nice to have a little change from CBS (AFC) coverage once in a while.

here are the rules and have been in place for decades...this only affects the PRIMARY market (the market/DMA the team resides in)...now there is some quirks and I'll explain later. But for all intents and purposes
-if the team is at home no game can be shown opposite it.
-if the home team is on the singleheader network the doubleheader network can only show one game
-if the team is on the road the game MUST be shown and the rules don't apply and you get 3 games
-ALL games must be shown on local OTA TV. So if the team is on NFL Net or ESPN in the Primary market it is sown on OTA TV
The only team that has 2 primary markets is Green Bay...Milwaukee is also one (going back to when they played there) but the only reason for it is so that ESPN games can be shown on local TV.

So for years in Minnesota we got lots of Raiders/Chargers/Broncos games in the late CBS slot.

Now the rules have been kinda laxed this year to a point. The NFL is trying a rule where games can be shown opposite the home team with a minimum of two. Now the home team can request a block past that but they dont have to. As example Cleveland and Miami blocked the early FOX game in week 1 and Miami did in week 2. Using my local team (Minnesota) week 3 was not blocked so Minneapolis got both CBS games (normally they would not have). Vikes have 3 weeks where we normally lose a game (weeks 3,6 and 14) and we **think** the Vikes will use their block week 14. We will see

The rules above for LA is moot. The NFL has allowed games to be shown opposite LAR & LAC games and they've even had double Doubleheaders when both LAC & LAR played on the singleheader network.

What confusion? All it means is that the possibility for 3 games will be shown in a market. Oakland is on the road so they will get 3 games. The Giants are at home but are not utilizing their block

Seattle is on the road at Arizona this week, being showed on KCYU - but they aren't airing an early game. Protecting CBS and the New England game?

The rules are silly, but yes, when a "home" team (meaning Seahawks are the home market) has an afternoon game in a local market (which TC/Yak is), they don't get the early game. As I understand it, this rotates between CBS and Fox on Sundays. It actually is in place to even out coverage among CBS and Fox.

since the Cowboys are playing the Saints on Sunday Night Football, here's the NFL games airing tomorrow afternoon in North Texas on KDFW Fox 4 and KTVT CBS 11.

KDFW Fox 4:
early game at 12 PM: Kansas City Chiefs vs. Detroit Lions in Detroit.
late game at 3 PM: none, singleheader week for Fox.

KTVT CBS 11:
early game at 12 PM: New England Patroits vs. Buffalo Bills in Buffalo.
late game at 3 PM: Minnesota Vikings vs. Chicago Bears in Chicago.

KTVT has the double header this week, while KDFW iinly has one game.

KXAS NBC 5 is where the Sunday Night games will air in North Texas.

nope. FOX only has one game this week. Therefore you get the "local" team on FOX in the late slot.

The "protection" you speak about only applies to the teams PRIMARY market...that is the market/DMA the team plays in...which would be Seattle DMA only
All other DMA's in Washington can show games opposite Seattle games if they want to

incorrect. Yakima is its own DMA and the only area that the current rules affect is the PRIMARY market (meaning Seattle DMA...). And since Seattle is on the road this week CBS can show a game opposite it (which they are....Minnesota at Chicago).
Most of Washington is showing Jacksonville Fighting Minshews @ Denver (yes its the Jags but having some fun with their QB)

Beginning this year, the other network can show a game opposite the local team's home game if the local team doesn't object. For example: Barring a last-minute objection, Phoenix viewers will be able to watch the Vikings/Bears game on KPHO-TV/5 opposite the Seahawks/Cardinals game on KSAZ-TV/10 (the only game on Fox this week). KPHO will also air the Pats/Bills game at 10 AM PDT/MST, since CBS has the doubleheader.

Yes, you did mention it. Sorry about that.

Allow local crews to call regular season Games and in all Sports postseason.
I'll go one further

I think ONLY the marquee Sunday afternoon games should be on the network & given the maximum exposure possible. The other games should be handled by local crews & RSOs just like the other sports

WFXT and WNAC both aired the NY Giants-Vikings game. I live in MA and won't mind if said Fox stations air Giants games every Sunday.

That's how things were prior to 1962, when the networks took over all NFL coverage except for preseason. It was an act of Congress to allow it, and it'll take another act of Congress to change it. Fat chance of that happening. Too many $Billions involved.

So what happened last night? I make a point of watching the end of whatever precedes the new episode of "The Simpsons" and it's a good thing I did. I fast forwarded through what the listings said was "The OT" and saw a game that appeared unlikely to end on time. It did. Then they had post-game interviews and the show started five minutes late. I made sure to add ten minutes in case five wasn't enough. I did the same for "Family Guy". I don't watch the other animated shows. I can't even stand to look at those people.

I see that next week, the Fox station in Asheville is listed airing a movie at 1, i guess they would show 49ers-Rams at 4:05? Or it could be Atlanta @ Arizona?
