Is it time for the NFL's television rules to be overhauled?

I can't blame Maroon 5 for that. The show's producer, the NFL, felt that had to incorporate other artists, and that confused the show.

In the middle of the show, all of a sudden we see SpongeBob SquarePants. Can you imagine that happening to Springsteen?

Then a couple of rappers take the show over. They do a few songs, and then Maroon 5 come back. It was a mess.

It was disjointed. Cross-collaboration can work, but this was not the best case study.

And I’d al ost put SpongeBob out of my mind...it was so out of context.

It's amazing how the NFL is afraid of a Halftime show controversy but is fine to employ wife beaters and murderers.

I heard a caller on our local sports talk station make that point the other day.

He was talking about Colin Kaepernick, pointing out that he's persona-non-grata while the league continues
to employ actual violent thugs.

I don't agree with Colin Kaepernick. Don't like what he did. But I have to concede the caller's point.
Regardless what you think of it he hasn't actually harmed anybody.

No, he hasn’t. But that doesn’t mean he is assessed as a player whose upsides negate his downsides. And there’s a case to be made he isn’t all that great a player in the league.

This is the same league that was supposedly blacklisting Tim Tebow according to some. People see conspiracy theories wherever it suits their viewpoint.

Squidward was just to keep the kids' attention, IMO.

Squidward was just to keep the kids' attention, IMO.

Which never happened before.

I get there was a connection to the creator’s death or some such thing, but absent any context, it can’t be expected to make any sense to many of the viewers. Heck, with that knowledge it still made no sense.

Tough loss for Seattle yesterday. The Chargers' defense was too good for Russell Wilson. The 'No Sherman, No Chancellor, No Lynch' curse has hit Seattle pretty hard IMO. Not often you see a Seattle game on CBS, but the Chargers are an AFC team.
Then flipped it over for the Saints upsetting the Rams on Fox. Y'know, I was REALLY expecting Curt Menefee to show up with a few minutes to go, since it was 4:30 PT: 'due to NFL regulations we have to pull you off the Rams game and start 'The OT', don't blame me...' Thank goodness I didn't see Curt, unlike all the bonus coverage segments I've seen. Like pulling us off Miami a few weeks ago in OT to air infomercials thanks to CBS's late game. BTW, impressive job by Drew Brees and the Saints defense!

i was expecting fox to od the same thing when the lions/cardinals game went to ot, but fox didn't do it. i wonder if nbc decided they would rather delay their game than force fox to show the simpsons.....

Same here! In overtime, I was expecting ANY second for Curt Menefee to interrupt the feed with "due to NFL regulations we have to continue The OT, don't blame me, don't blame Fox..." But they let it run to the end of OT and the tie. Wow!

They have a pretty long pre-game at NBC, and I've seen them extend it a bit to cover for a late game.

But I suspect phone calls from both companies were made to the NFL to make sure it was OK with them.

NBC never wanted Fox to run a OT show that competed with their pregame.

The NFL needs to let affiliates carry more than one game. This Sunday The Giants-Bills game is on CBS at 1PM, but WFSB in Hartford is airing the Patriots-Dolphins game. The league is giving a big middle finger to the Giants fans, by not allowing the affiliates to air more than one game.

They're on at the same time, so it's one or the other.

Maybe he means putting the "other" game on a subchannel, like the regional sports nets do when they encounter a conflict involving teams to which they hold the rights. I have a feeling the NFL will never allow that, considering that local advertisers have paid good money to be on the lone game carried by that network affiliate in the time slot.

I agree, plus they sell full schedule subscriptions for their All Access package. If you want to see games other than the one chosen for your market, there are packages you can buy. Or you can just hop in the car and drive to the local sports bar. I hear they have such things in Connecticut. :)

Yes, Buffalo @ NY Giants (road team first!) will not air in Hartford/New Haven. I'm almost positive this conflict will happen at least one more time this season. You can always try "CBS 3" up in Springfield...WAIT! That's Massachusetts. That's automatically New England first. Damn! :(

as of right now week 15
Giants play host to Miami
Pats play at Cincy

I'd think the Pats game will be the choice for WFSB again. Of course, if Cincinnati is challenging for a playoff position, the game may be cherry-picked for a later slot, right? It's hard to picture Giants-Dolphins meaning much at all, but a surprising Giants season and a noncompetitive Bengals team could put the NYG game in contention. I think it's safe to assume that barring injury disaster the Patriots will be tuning up for the playoffs by Week 15 and that the Dolphins very well might be sitting on one or zero wins.

correct. After week 5 games can be moved to better timeslots or different networks. Only thing is that week is FOX's DH week so CBS would only show one game.

Which means WFSB would have to show Giants-Dolphins while Pats-Bengals at 4:30 wouldn't be seen in Hartford at all? As an all-AFC match-up, there's no way it could be switched to Fox, right? The Patriots had better have everything wrapped up by then or the switchboards at WFSB and WTIC will blow up!

both games right now are at noon central. FOX has the doubleheader so the late games on CBS right now are Cleveland/Arizona and Jax/Oakland which will go to those areas and the FOX early home teams (Washington DC, Green Bay, Charlotte and Detroit).

As an all-AFC match-up, there's no way it could be switched to Fox, right?
sure they can. Flex scheduling has been around for a few years now. They do that to balance out the TV slots and give the best games to the most eyeballs. Or if one side (say CBS) has way more games than FOX they shift games around. As example FOX next week has 2 AFC-NFC matchups (Oakland at Minny and Miami at Dallas) that "old rules" would put them on CBS (since the AFC team is the road team). I see CBS has 2 NFC road team games including a all NFC game in the late slot (Nawlins/Seattle)

But as of right now (again its waaaaay to early in the season and games will move around) the late FOX game that week is Rams and Dallas or Atlanta/San Fran.

The Patriots had better have everything wrapped up by then or the switchboards at WFSB and WTIC will blow up!
Why? Hartford is showing the Pats this week and pretty sure they would in week 15 also.
