Is it time for the NFL's television rules to be overhauled?

I got cheated out of coverage of President Bush. I checked the listings and "60 Minutes" was to air at 7. Fox had the late game, and "The OT" was in the listings. I had the second half of "60 Minutes" set to record because that's when "Jeopardy" is on 6 nights a week (or supposed to be, on Saturday). I got 25 minutes of football and 5 minutes of the introduction to "60 Minutes". When I switched to the other recording there was a gap. The next time they went to a commercial the stopwatch said it had been 35 minutes. Huh?

It was too late to try to record the 30 minutes I lost on the station that had football. It never occurred to me that I should have recorded both halves of the show from the same affiliate. My cable company has two for some reason. And I am grateful, since the signal with an antenna is not what it was ten years ago, if I have to watch "Jeopardy" on that station.

But it has been stated here the home market will not allow competition for the home team's game … is it when the home team is on the road? That would be logical. If the game is at home and not sold out it won't be broadcast.

So if that game is on Fox, CBS gets a late game.

The station where I saw at least part of the coverage of Bush is not in the Panthers' home market. The rest of "60 Minutes" was about the destruction of Paradise, which I didn't watch.

Umm, 60 Minutes is on CBS. Fox had the doubleheader yesterday. Unless you were in a market where CBS was airing a 4:05 game, I don't understand why you would only have the 2nd half of 60 Minutes set to record.

The game was still going on at 7:00, so that tells me I was in a market with a 4:05 game.

My home market CBS affiliate aired a 4:05 game yesterday, which is incredibly rare (on at least one occasion earlier in the season, my CBS aired a 1pm game while the other affiliates in the state aired a 4:05pm game.

what the hell does Jeopardy have to do with 60 minutes? Thats the part that doesn't make sense to me.

ok...lets make it simple. In the home teams market (the DMA of the home team...in your case Charlotte)
-Carolina at home? NO other game can be shown in that time slot. Simple as that
-Carolina on the road and the other network has the SH? 99.5% of the time the local affiliate will show a game in the other time slot.
-Carolina on the road and the other network has the DH? Both slots can be shown

Since Carolina was on the road yesterday on FOX and CBS had the SH its point 2. This week its the same thing. Charlotte CBS has the late game. Neighboring markets do not have to follow the rules. In alot of other markets the neighboring markets usually follow the same examples for point 2. So if the Vikes are on the road on the DH network most of the MN markets (Mankato, Duluth, Rochester) follow Minneapolis and dont go against thge Vikes...unless its the Packers. Then they would. :)
The weird thing here in Minnesota is there is only 2 times the Vikes are on the road on the DH network and both are late games so CBS got the early game (which is what they want....they prefer you to stay after NFL today with them)

The "sold out" rule has been moot since 2014. All games are shown regardless of ticket sales/sold out status.

The 2 late games this past week both ran long but apparently CBS didnt wait until everyone was done so they only needed 2 feeds for E/C timezones. The NYJ/Tenn game ran 24 minutes long while Oakland/KC ran 27 minutes long.

For the next Seahawks game, I'll have to listen to Steve Raible and Warren Moon over on KATS/KIT for the radio coverage. We don't subscribe to cable anymore, so no more ESPN MNF. And it's only OTA in the HOME market - not in regional places like Yakima, Portland or Spokane...

same here in Mankato, MN.

WCCO has the game OTA. Is that because the Vikings are contracted to air MNF Vikings games on channel 4? Which leaves Mankato out in the cold even though you get some of the Minneapolis stations on cable/satellite. You're in a worse situation than we are!
Seattle is airing MNF on KIRO, which preempts 8-9PM CBS sitcoms to 1:37-2:37AM Tue morning (new episodes of The Neighborhood & Happy Together). I figured they would be on KCPQ...

I have the DVR set to record whatever comes on at 7:30 on the CBS affiliate, which is not in the Charlotte market but can be picked up where I live with an antenna, a better antenna than I currently have. This is the only way it will record an episode that I have already (supposedly) recorded from the Charlotte NBC affiliate (unless Lester Holt ran long or something else happened). On Sunday if the CBS affiliate not in Charlotte did not show the late game, as it apparently did not, that will be "60 Minutes".

This is the first time I've heard that.

I'm aware WCCO has the game. Theyve carried Vikings MNF games for the last couple years

Is that because the Vikings are contracted to air MNF Vikings games on channel 4?
yes. MNF rights are put up for the highest bidder in the designated market for the teams playing. Now there are exceptions. ABC O&O and Hearst stations get first dibs in a market and can refuse it. But in all other markets its highest bidder.

Which leaves Mankato out in the cold even though you get some of the Minneapolis stations on cable/satellite. You're in a worse situation than we are!
on cable they get all the Minneapolis stations except KSTC 45 (which makes no sense as its an Independent) and CW (they use to carry the cable only CW now they carry KTTC-DT2 out of Rochester, MN)

satellite is jacked up depending on location and carrier. This arises because Mankato proper, which is in Blue Earth County, is the Mankato DMA (which is just KEYC CBS -1 & FOX -2)..North Mankato, across the Minnesota river, is in Nicollet County, which is **technically** the Minneapolis market. Lets convolute it more...KEYC's studios are in North Mankato ;)

If you are in North Mankato (zip code 56003) on Dish you get all the Minneapolis stations + KEYC CBS & FOX
If you are in Mankato proper (zip 56001) on Dish you only get KEYC CBS & FOX + ABC & NBC from Minneapolis + National PBS. This is due to Dish not being allowed to supposedly import ANY station from a neighboring market UNLESS there is no affiliate in the market. (yet they import KEYC to North Mankato residents). Funny how Dish use to give both cities the same "short" lineup (like Mankato gets) until recently

Directv USE to be the same as what Dish is now...but now with AT&T in charge they decided to change it. Mankato & North Mankato get KEYC CBS & FOX, ABC & NBC from Minneapolis, CW from Minneapolis and National PBS. So North Mankato folks get shorted on stations.

Lets throw another monkey in the wrench. There is a translator farm run by the rural co-ops in the area that is about 25 miles from Mankato proper. They use to (key word there is use to) carry all the Minneapolis stations + some other stations like Laff, RTV, Grit, Heartland, Rev'n and a few more. So if you had an outdoor antenna (a good one) you got all the Minneapolis stations (including subs) + KEYC + 7-8 extra stations. Well back in April KEYC (CBS Mankato) successfully got WCCO taken off the translator farm because **technically** the translators are in the Mankato market. CTV (the co-op that runs the translators) and WCCO could have just done it via syndex (overlay KEYC when same shows on) but WCCO claimed "technical issues" so it was dropped. So OTA folks in Mankato are shut out of WCCO.

Minneapolis its 7-10 and they are moving programming to like 1:37am-4:37am and moving Wheel to 1:07am

@DANDERSON6500: Keep in mind that Pittsburgh vs Oakland was the original Sunday night game this week. It was flexed for L.A. Rams vs Chicago.

It was flexed because, despite the longtime rivalry, the game looked like a mismatch. The Raiders played well and pulled the big upset, but the network undoubtedly had more viewers -- especially from the start -- for Rams-Bears than it would have had for Steelers-Raiders.

By the way, the New York Giants at Indianapolis Colts game originally scheduled for 1:00 PM ET on FOX will move to 1:00 PM ET on CBS. That's for week 16. New York gets a doubleheader because the Giants game is at the same time as the Jets home game.

That's going to suck for those here in the Hartford/New Haven TV market. The Buffalo vs New England game is on CBS at the same time. Naturally, WFSB-TV (CBS) channel 3 of Hartford is going to air the Patriots. They do in every case. However, WTIC-TV (FOX) channel 61 of Hartford will air the Giants nearly every time when their network has the conflict.

In the past 2 seasons, WTIC in Hartford has been choosing to air the Patriots over the Giants, most likely due to their continued success. That said, why were BOTH NY teams scheduled for the same time AND the same network in the first place?

Unless you're talking about the Bills, the other "NY team" is the Jets. They're not part of this situation. The NYC market won't get Patriots-Bills, nor will other New York state markets that usually get the Giants, so there's no conflict. The NFL is apparently comfortable with the "are we there yet?" state -- Connecticut -- sometimes missing out on a Giants or Jets game when the Patriots are good, just as was the case when the Jets or Giants were shown here when the Pats were bad. The advertisers aren't demanding Hartford eyeballs anyway; to them, Hartford, with no NFL team of its own, might as well be Honolulu.
