Is It Time To Cancel The CW?

skiwest said:
Cancel it. I have never watched any of their shows.

Well, there's a valid reason. ::)

Of course, one doesn't "cancel" a network....

Found the answer. They were 10-year agreements, signed in 2006. So, the soonest the network could end operations without breach would be the summer of 2016. Coincidentally, that's when the Netflix and Hulu agreements run out too, so perhaps that's the plan?

The biggest thing killing The CW is it's ownership (same reason MyNet will never go anywhere). It's owned by CBS, so it will always be crippled by the fact that CBS wouldn't want to cannibalize itself.

Given the usual network decision-making of late, in that scenario, it wouldn't be a surprise if CBS was trying to hold down the CW, and ended up tripping over itself and making the CW bigger.... :)

Maybe The CW should try adding a few foreign (English) shows that aren't already available on cable. Some of those might find a niche with American audiences.

By total audience, The CW is now the 7th most watched network, falling behind both Univision and Telemundo. If you can't beat two foreign language stations, is it time to return these stations to independent status?

maybe CW should consider going all-Esperanto? :D

Are you crazy?! Nobody in the USA speaks Esperanto(other than a few linguists).
Klingon then?

It's not about the vampires per se, they say it's a "love" story they like.
And it's not just young idiot females. Some of those idiot females are into their 40s.   ;D

I never fail to be amazed by the interest women seem to have
in vampires, "beasts" (as in "Beauty And The..."), and stalkers.
I've dated at least two women in my time who love this sort of
thing, and one of them watches practically every procedural
(think "CSI" and its spinoffs) that comes on. The other one was
a fanatic about Darren McGavin's "Kolchak: The Night Stalker,"
but her real obsession was "The Six Million Dollar Man" (also, she
would never watch "All In The Family," even when it was number
one, preferring "Emergency!"). True, both of them can watch whatever
they want, but I do find their preference for action-adventure and cop
shows as interesting as that for shows about guys with a dark side.

Well, it's actually worse than that. They are the 7th most watched BROADCAST network. They were 17th overall. Here's the weekly numbers (by thousands) of the top broadcast and cable networks together: (taken from that yahoo story and tvbythenumbers.com cable network ratings)

Rank Network Viewers
1 CBS 13,900
2 FOX 8,700
3 ABC 7,000
4 NBC 6,600
5 ESPN 4,503
6 UNIV 3,400
7 USA 2,733
8 DSNY 2,465
9 HIST 2,237
10 TBSC 1,980
11 FOXN 1,871
12 A&E 1,850
13 TNT 1,552
14 TELE 1,400
15 SYFY 1,383
16 DISC 1,313
17 CW 1,300
18 FOOD 1,294
19 TRU 1,242
20 ADSM 1,232
21 FAM 1,229
22 HGTV 1,119
23 ION 1,100
24 BET 1,099
25 FX 1,048
26 MTV 1,032
27 LIFE 1,004
28 NAN 975
29 TLC 923
30 AMC 902
31 CMDY 894
32 TVLD 891
33 BRAV 875

Oh, and one more thing.. for those who will ask.. Telefutura's 620,000 viewers probably ranked it considerably lower than 33rd so I didn't include it on this list. Also, My Network TV is no longer rated as a network.. it's rated as a syndication block. If it were rated as a network, it would likely show up on this list with around a million to 1.5 million viewers.. which would push CW even farther down the list.

Could CW be considered a sort of hybrid network, considering that they are on OTA stations mostly in the top 100 markets, and on their 100+ network on cable in other places?

Most affiliates in the 100+ DMA are digital subchannels.

The CW Plus

In the pre-DTV age, yes but as mentioned above, most of the 100 and above markets are subchannels that take most of their programming from CW+

Boy, that list makes NBC look GOOD. :D

Should the CW be ended, I think Warner Brothers would be smart to bring the WB back.... as a cable channel.

Why not as a syndication service, like PTEN? Although PTEN started as a potential fifth network, it ended up as a syndication service before shutting down. Instead of reruns as found on MyNetworkTV, they can air first-run shows.

And 60's

It's amazing that these idiot females Vampire lovers are the ones that always show up on Judge Judy or the crime shows after being and taken for every dime they have, abused or killed because the are attracted to the bad boys and dangerous types in their demented idea of love. Notice that they are usually obese gross looking creatures and the men are usually great looking. The women are so needy and stupid that that they can't figure out what wrong with this picture.
