Is Jack the problem or are the listeners the problem?

New Yorkers, who are supposed to be so sophisticated, seem to be pretty unsophisticated when it comes to radio. Those who are willing to try something new and different seem to be far and few. When there has been a choice between adventurous or mainstreamsafe stations, the majority of people will flock to the safe-predictable radio. Is there any wonder that most stations are tightly formatted with endless repetition? It seems New Yorkers are among the least adventurous people when it comes to listening habits. Now I certainly wouldn’t call Jack an adventurous radio station. It is a hits radio station with very little adventure. No one will ever confuse Jack with NEW FM of the late 60’s – early 70’s, but that’s a good example of how people turned to something safe (WPLJ) when WPLJ became formatted playing only the album hits. New Yorkers have very little patience or tolerance for things out of the mainstream. Come to think of it, not many people anywhere have much patience or tolerance for things out of the mainstream. I guess New Yorkers are not all that different than people from anywhere else when it comes to listening habits.

I don’t know what Jack isn’t doing better than it is in NYC. It is doing better is other parts of the country including Chicago and Los Angeles. Maybe the problem is with the New York audience.

NY is way TOO COOL for "Jack";try Idaho, or Biloxi!

I think the reason Jack in new york city is doing so bad is because it took over new york's oldies station cbsfm. Listeners would not even care if it went to WNEW or Krock Instead. This is the reason behind it all.

Answer: It's a stupid idea. Do you really think that because a variety of played out hits and a few that have had the dust blown off is what people have been looking for? And because you're the superior intellect everyone else is stupid and unsophisticated because they don't like the idea? Sickening.

It's a small market style type format. It's laughable. Even those who know nothing about radio get thrown for a loop with the transitions of music. It's absolutely the dumbest idea for a major market I've ever heard. It's like they went to the salvation army and got a bunch of cds for 10 cents a piece and played them as they came in. Just because they're playing variety doesn't mean it's a variety PEOPLE want to hear or like. That's not about being sophisticated or superior it's about NOT LIKING IT.

And let's not act like RADIO is the most important thing in people's lives. People have THEIR OWN TASTES and JACK's creator's think they can serve people's variety of tastes when in fact it's impossible. Technology is rendering radio less and less relevant each year. That's the reality.

Robert, if you are familiar with New York listening habits you'd know that NY is not a white boy rock town. NY is more of a R&B city. NY is it's own city, it isn't a large Dubuque. There is nothing wrong with NYC. It's more like there's a misunderstanding of just what NYC is. The population of NYC is probably the most sophisticated in this country. Liking this junk box format won't make us more sophisticated. It will make us more sheep like. I'm a lifelong NYer with over 30 years in NY radio. Bruce Morrow has always said that outsiders (Non New Yorkers) just don't understand his act. We as a city even though we are home to maybe 100 different cultures, have a culture all our own and this small market Jack format won't cut it here. Remember the Sinatra line, NY if you can make it there you can make it anywhere? Well Jack ain't making it here. I don't know of a format so heavily promoted that has been such a flop. As I said in an e-mail, the folks at Ford Motors who conceived the Edsel division don't feel so all alone now. They have company in the field of broadcasting.

Looks like you are using the bad Summer Trend of Jack in NY to support your anti-Jack ways. I'll say it again. Jack is not a small town radio format anymore. It is doing well in many other cities and markets. Give it up already! Plus, one of the reasons why Jack isn't doing well in New York is because it REPLACED a legendary oldies station. Please get the facts straight. Actually, check the facts, cuz it looks like you haven't.

You, my friend, are clueless. After New York, they're ALL small markets. Jack is doomed in New York.

> So you think they'd be listening to Jack if it were on

I think they would just not care if it were on another station. Just the fact that it replaced such a legendary station with a huge following makes it a big issue.

I don't think it has anything to do with sophistication even though NYC is the biggest market. The fact of the matter is that NYC is a melting pot of different cultures and to have a station that tries to mix in everything all together with poor transitions, it may be fun to listen to at first but after a while it gets stale.

My opinion and I'm sticking to it...

Los Angeles has 10 million people in it's market. Many New Yorkers live in Los Angeles. Los Amgeles is just as diverse as New York. Hardly a small market. Jack may be doomed in NYC due to small minded people who'd rather listen to "I Got You Babe" 10 times a day.

The NYC may be the most sophisticated but their radio listening habit certainly isn't. I'm a New Yorker and I don't care for Cousin Brucie and his schtick. I enjoyed him when I was a child growing up in NYC but once I got in High School, I was turned off by his routine. Give me Scott Muni and WNEW FM anyday. As far as sheep, you already are like sheep listening to tightly formated radio that some people love so much. Play the hits and nothing but the hits. YUCK.

Are you serious? Comparing New York to LA is like comparing apples to oranges. The demographics are completely different.
You can't make an analogy of that sort and sound intelligent simply because LA is market no. 2.
Makes no sense. Oh..and by the way, JACK, NYC. won't make it.
Not the kind of format New Yorker's would like. Try Grand Rapids, MI for something like JACK to make any money!

They're doing bad because they replaced CBS? You're not even worth discussing Jack's lack with. That's a horrendous crutch to lean on and sounds like a memo that went out from Infinity in case the dog barfed on the rug.

It's small time, small town radio. Bad transitions that are like listening to fingernails grind a chalk board. Played out music heard on every channel in every market with some Ooooo nonsense thrown in by accident.

NYC, and Chicago appear to be more sophisticated than you wish. While it may be successful in L.A., don't forget it's L.A., love and marriage usually lasts a little less than year. Hardly something you'd want to bet the beach on.

BTW. I could care less about oldies, CBS or JMK in Chicago. No disrespect to those who appreciate them. My argument has been and forever will be that Jack is an incredibly stupid idea. It's bad radio and bad moves and that is what Jack will be laughed at and remembered for in 2007. What stupidity!

North AND Central Jersey ALONE have 5 million people in them. NYC has 8 million. Long Island 4.5 million. Westchester, Rockland, Orange, Putnam and Southern Conn. ... don't even know how many millions we're talking about. We're talking 20 to 25 million people within 70 miles of NYC.

You now officially qualify as a full fledged moron with that statement.

Give me a break. There are as many people in Southern California as all of New York State with just as diverse a population. Name calling only proves what a small minded person you are.

That's NYC's loss. Don't have to go to Grand Rapids. LA & Chicago like it just fine. I can compare the diversity of LA and NY. LA is just as diverse with just as many radio stations as NYC and with more different formats. LA has standards, country and oldies as well as Jack. Perhaps NYC can learn something from the entertainment capitol of the world.

HILARIOUS! LOL! So true, so true.
