Is Kim hot AC now?

I believe the point CajunCutie was trying to make, Meg, was we tuned KIM in was because they bragged "70's, 80's and whatever"... I had actually started tuning them in for most of my work day plus most of my the drive time and if I heard the same song twice in 10 days, I was shocked. Plus, they were playing a lot of the classic rock I love, newer stuff like Nickleback and Los Lonely Boys along with my guilty closeted pleasures like Culture Club, The Bangles and Prince. Now it feels like everytime I turn the radio on, I'm getting Gwen Stefani "weehoo"..... :-\

And you're right, most folks are not that into radio - but when several of your friends work in the industry, you do seem to notice more stuff than the average bear.....
 
I agree with cajuncutie in that I listened just to see what lost gem they'd play next.

I'm in the 36 - 49 demo, not in the business, but just an educated listener. The original KIM format kept me intrigued. Now I'm just disappointed.... :(

P.S.: I did speak with an individual on the inside at Murray Road, and the format change to Hot AC was confirmed as of Memorial Day weekend.

That's what I liked about CHR in the 80s. You didn't have excessive overplays of songs like you do now. Yes, 85+ spins are very common in the CHR now. 100-plus is also quite common as well. In fact, WFKS Jacksonville's top six songs have at least 110 spins, with "Give It To Me" by Timabaland & Nelly Furtado leading with 118 spins. Some stations have lower rotations, like Y101 here in Jackson, in which "Before He Cheats" by Carrie Underwood and "Home" by Daughtry are tied with 65 spins.

The website (www.989kimfm.com) is down. It responds with a Sun Server Login window.

This weekend I heard a tagline of "80's, 90's, and Whatever" and the AT40 - The '70's show did not air.
 
I'm guessing that the website is being redone. That and the new tagline would signal to me that Kim has all but officially gone hot AC. Plus, you did say someone in the building confirmed the shift to hot AC, so there you go.

I thought I heard "Best mix of the 80s 90s and Today"..whichever, they are going head to head with FM 100 ???
 
Sounds like they might be working a wedge between Q and FM, to me. Seems there might be a CHR audience who don't want so much rhythmic (Q) but want to still listen to a "hip" station (more hip than FM, maybe?)

Who knows? Might just work...

Lovely...another throwaway radio station just used to flank your competitors.

Whatever happened to programming to win? Too expensive, I suppose.
 
Bur what if "flanking" as you call it actually nets a good chunk from both and MAKES WKIM a winner?

I don't see what they're doing as "flanking." I call it 'wedging" really. They're trying to wedge their way in between two stations. They may have seen an audience with reasons they don't listen to Q and reasons they don't listen to FM but WOULD listen to something in-between.
 
When I was listening to Kim and FM100 over the Memorial Day weekend, FM100 to me had a fresher, younger sound with songs from artists like Fergie and Justin Timberlake. Kim also did play Justin Timberlake, but they leaned a little older, especially when you take into consideration the old American Top 40 episodes they air on Saturday and Sunday.
 
The obvious format hole in Memphis is a 2nd country station.

20 years ago when a company could only own 1 AM and 1 FM per market, 98.9 would be country.

There is absolutely not enough audience for 2 Hot AC stations.
 
I noticed that allaccess.com confirmed the switch to Hot AC today in their "net news" section also.

As a sidenote, I'm located across the state in Knoxville, and I've noticed that Citadel's Adult Hits station here (WOKI "98.7 Earl FM"), has also taken on a much more Hot AC sound in the past couple of months. In the past they would play more 70's stuff and more oddball stuff, but lately it seems to be more stuff from the 80's to today and more focused on Hot AC artists like Nickleback, the Fray, Gwen Stefani, etc. I'm wondering if Citadel isn't planning on moving "Earl FM" to Hot AC here as well. It would make sense, because we already have a "Jack FM" across town doing Adult Hits, and our former Hot AC (WMYU, 93-1 the Point) recently dropped Hot AC for all 80's.

Anyway, some interesting moves by Citadel recently. They seem to be moving away from the more non traditional formats they tried (like "Kim" in Memphis and "Diva" in Baton Rouge), and moving towards more traditional AC formats. Guess we'll see if "Earl FM" here in Knoxville continues it's move toward Hot AC, as "Kim FM" did.
 
brian, you're right. there's room for more than 2 actually. there's fewer shares of country than AC here. attacking your own country station only creates a duplication of cume and a lot weaker stations for ad dollars. AC or a hot talker is the better move than country. 94.1 should have been country.

I can understand why Citadel changed Diva in Baton Rouge. In fact, I don't know why they created it in the first place because the Diva station in New Orleans, WDVW 92.3, puts out a good signal into Baton Rouge as well (having the transmitter between the two cities always helps).

yeah, i've noticed the same as well about the past week or so... and when they do play an 80s or 70s song, sometimes they say "here's some vintage kim" or something like that...

i don't know that they could necessarily compete all that well with 100...
