Is Lite 102.9 really Lite?

I only heard several brief samples. But a voice said they had a new sound. Could this be it?

"Manic Monday" by The Bangles and "How Deep Is Your Love" by The Bee Gees while I was in the bank. "Old Time Rock and Roll" by Bob Seger (which isn't Lite though I do like it) and "If You Leave Me Now" by Chicago while I was getting gas. Interestingly, one of the cashiers said they needed to turn the music down. He or she was having a hard time hearing something. It wasn't all that loud inside, though outside I was glad it wasn't the so-called Lite that has been on the air the past several months. I pushed the button once in the car and heard "Dancing in the Dark" by Bruce Springsteen. Okay, that could go either way.

But this is a long way from what I was hearing just months ago. This is what K-104.7 sounded like!

I never noticed anything different with 102.9. They sound more like a Hot AC/uptempo AC station. In fact 102.9 and 1047 sound identical to me... The Lite name needs to go...

The problem lies in the fact that AC is no longer AC. AC in general has become uptempo and close to what Hot AC used to be, while Hot AC looks more like Adult Top 40.

I'm usually pretty OK with more aggressive songs being on AC's, but Lite102.9 is one of the few AC's that plays "It's My Life" by Bon Jovi. That's over the top, if they're going to call themselves 'Lite.' I prefer best mix, best variety, etc.

I think Lite 102.9 is much more uptempo than they have been in recent years. As someone said before, AC has changed. There are a few markets bringing back the "Easy" format, like Carolina 92.1 in Columbia. There's an Easy in Miami now.

I think that CC decided that despite the up tempo format, it couldn't afford to lose the "Lite" because it is a huge brand in the market.

In 2007, CC's 106.7 Lite-FM dropped the "Lite" branding for a short time, going with "New York 106.7". The "Lite" branding was restored within a few months. The "Lite" brand is too solidly entrenched, no matter what direction the AC format takes. Just MHO. :)

So there haven't been any recent changes, and I just got really lucky?

But you have to admit some of the songs I listed surely wouldn't be part of a Hot AC approach like everyone seems to be describing.

Guys, the "Hot" in "Hot AC" means CURRENT, not UPTEMPO - Hot AC is a variation of CHR (for adults), and it involves playing at least 4-5 current tracks per hour

With the exception of the CBS Fresh stations, AC in 2011 plays very few currents, just like it played very few currents 10 years ago - it's nowhere close to Hot AC

Exactly....compare a station like WSTR, WTMX, WPLJ (although PLJ has moved in a slightly older direction recently), etc. to a station like WLYT, WKQC, WMAG, etc....there are a few similarities, but they are hardly really close.

AC is a gold-based format. Hot AC is not. AC's normally play a couple of 70s songs an hour (which Hot AC does NOT do, WLYT plays a lot of 70s), and at least 3-4 80s songs (most Hot AC's have either dropped this decade or limited it, except for some like WMMX, lol). Most AC's play like one current an hour, Hot AC plays 5 or so. There's overlap, but the formats are definitely different. Hot AC usually has a more modern/upbeat presentation.

I heard a "lite" type station play "Pour a little sugar on me" by Def Leopard a few months back and almost drove off the road.  I guess we need to remember that today's 35-44 year old female grew up listening to different music than the 35-44 year old woman did who listened twenty five years ago when many of these 'lite" AC's were born.

The research, if there is any today, is showing different results as to what's desirable and acceptable.

^ Maybe 20 years ago. That definition doesn't translate well to what the format is today.

If you're talking about AC, it plays just as many currents as it did 20 years ago- nothing has changed, except some of the gold tracks are "heavier" - that doesn't make it "Hot AC", though, since we're talking about "heavier" tracks from 25 years ago, not "heavier" tracks that are currently charting on the pop chart

If ACs were to start playing brand new tracks by Thirty Seconds To Mars, My Chemical Romance, and Linkin Park, then yeah, I'd say the format was going "Hot AC" - but playing 80s hits by Bon Jovi and Def Leppard have nothing to do with the "Hot AC" format (most Hot ACs don't even touch those songs since they're too old)

Looking at Lite 102.9's most played songs, they do play Nickelback/How You Remind Me and If Today Was Your Last Day, so I'm not sure Bon Jovi and Whitesnake are really any "harder" than these Nickelback tracks

(Sorry just noticed something else...)

WKQC's playlist really has exclusively "soft" songs, just like you guys want - so Lite 102.9 is probably playing some "edgier" older songs to differentiate themselves from K104.7

If listening to Bon Jovi, Whitesnake, Def Leppard, or Nickelback makes you "drive off the road", or "storm out of a bank", then just listen to K104.7!!

After Christmas they shifted to a more upbeat, Hot AC sound. Now we have 102.9, K104.7 and 107.9 the Link all sounding pretty much the same. I hope one of them flips soon.

I would consider them "bright" AC, perhaps...when you're rolling 2-3 70s songs, a lot of 80s, and just like one current an hour, you're still definitely AC. Remember, they have been promoting "the bright new sound of Lite 102.9"...

This WAS true at least during the day. I can't say it's true at night.

And I started this topic because a sample I heard was definitely softer than what Lite 102.9 has been playing.

Listening to 102.9, I hardly hear alot of 70s myself. :-\ I noticed both k104.7 and 10.2.9 tend to play more 80s and less 70s. Usually the 70s songs they play are the small selection of overplayed uptempo hits. I think the 60s and 70s music format is lost forever in charlotte.

Too bad.. Even Columbia, SC and Raleigh,NC has better music for the 45+ year olds.. Very confused...

I heard "Lite" a couple of weeks ago in Miami, Lite 101.5 WLYF that is.

WLYT is nothing like it. They are tipping more toward Hot A/C. Actually I liked the Miami Hot A/C better Coast 97.3.

Sounds like WOBM 92.7 Toms River, NJ. You had "Disco Inferno" by The Trammps, some 70s Elton John, "Take On Me" by A-ha and Katy Perry in the same day. I don't normally listen to WOBM, but it's on at the office all day. :)
