Is Political Talk Talked Out?

However, my "passion" is in the process fo business.

So, if "business is business", why are you in radio and not running a chain store franchise or a used car lot?

The format of having a DJ talk in between playing records has been around since the 1930's. In fact, there were programs with an announcer talking in between records back in the 1920's. Since that format is almost as old as radio itself, I think it's safe to say that format has almost lasted forever, especially since it shows no signs of fading away.

A DJ talking in between record is not a format. It's the raw stuff from which many formats are made. The music is intrinsic to a format. To fail to recognize that is to equate "Beautiful Music" in the old KABL mode to "Hard Rock" and to "Rap". The amount of talk allowed and subject matter is part of making up a format.

It's more like a branching tree. What I described is the lowest level of music formatting. It's the trunk of the music format tree. That splits into major branches, like "current songs", "vintage songs", etc. Those branches split into smaller branches like "oldies" or "classic rock" for vintage songs, or "urban" or "country" for current songs. And those branches divide into twigs like "Jack" or "Solid Rockin' Gold", etc.

When comparing music radio to talk radio, you have to go to the lowest level of division. The current "formats" of political talk radio may change, but the basic fundamental format is not "talked out" or destined to disappear.
