Is there about to be another format flip for Cumulus-Nashville?

Does this mean radio people can't like any kind of radio that doesn't agree with what non-radio people like?
What am I missing here? But listening to much of what's on the radio now, I understand why my parents didn't listen much to the radio (except when they could hear me--they did have some taste.)

No, it means radio people's views and perspectives of what listeners want is often skewed because we're too close to it. Being open about change means doing real research (that naughty word) to find out what our customers (listeners) want. People in radio are really good at railing against this and that and almost always speak from the perspective of what THEY like vs. what's best for radio listeners. And, yes, there are better ways of finding out what listeners want and expect than talking on the request line and meeting listeners at car dealer remotes.

You're still not with me. I haven't been involved in or played music on the air for about 35 years+. But I can cover/report news with whatever music you're playing on the station, even polka or big band in that's what you're inclined to do. I've been fortunate to have a career with several stations where news was important and hope we served what the listeners wanted in information.

I'm just talking about having a choice about what music/info I (me/myself/a person) want to listen to, not you (your cousin/best friend/ or neighbor or anyone else aged 12 - 64).

I realize I'm not in the demographics ANY programmers are looking for, and the researchers won't talk to me or my wife when they ask the old broadcasting question, (does anyone in your family work in.....) when they've called.

It's the job of the pds and programming wizards for the corporation to decide what they think will draw listeners, get the numbers and make money; Not mine.
The companies have always compensated me well..but not well enough to say I have to listen to what they program.

And I have always been glad the programmers and sales people had something to work with. Because of them, I've got a roof over my head, watched my 3 sons grow up and have their children. And they paid me for the fun I was having.
Not many people have such a blessed life.
Thanks for reading.

You're right, Buddy. But is IS our job to find out what listeners want, how they want it and give it to them the way they expect it. You don't do that by throwing darts or guessing or talking to a few pals who've been in the biz for years. You look at other success stories (not just what but WHY they do what they do) and you do local audience research (format search, perceptual studies, music testing) to get as close as possible to what your market demands- then, you deliver. It's pretty simple, really.

97.1 is a stupid radio station. Another thing they're doing is running a commercial saying,
"go to our website at classichits971.com and ...blah blah blah...." Their website's
been down for how many days now? And it won't be back until....whenever? They need to cut that
commercial out...a pointless waste of airtime (30 seconds? 60 seconds?) asking us to do something that's impossible. For now, anyway.

Well now, looks like Roadrunner's a pretty smart listener. Better not include him/her in on what would make a good soundin'
raydio station, right 'Cat? lol ;D

I think the current WRQQ (can we still use those tired calls???) website is pretty exciting and a vast improvement over the
previous twenty seven.

I'm a him....but what new website? Everytime I go there it says "under construction". Is there a new web address?

97 ROCK is a concept that has always been on Cumulus' "last stand" drawing board. Two years ago, before Oldies 97.1, and before Classic Hits WRQQ 97.1 (or whatever they are calling it THIS week) came along...97 ROCK "Nashville's REAL Rock Station" was tossed around. A complete branding campaign...t-shirts, jingles, bumpers, print ads...the whole nine yards...were all created...then at the last minute, Cume-less seized the Oldies abandonment and therefore you had the birth of Oldies 97.1.

Cumulus wants SO BAD to have a rock station in Nashville...now that they have a "top ten" market's new rock station in 99X atlanta...I wouldn't be surprised to see ROCK 97 born in Nashville as a 99X clone...with a few tweaks. As soon as WRQQ is deemed as obsolete...they'll pull that information from the archives...question is...will Cume-less get shy pulling the trigger b/c of the success of Nashville's Buzz (they feel they'd get butchered going up against it...but then again...that's never stopped the Dickeys from making a bad decision...has it?)

I don't buy it. You can't have a station called "97 ROCK" in the same market as "105.9 THE ROCK." CC would never let that happen.

Buffalo used to have 97 Rock and Rock 102, circa early 80's

True... and that reminds me that Tampa had two stations with the same name in the late '90s. And now neither one of those stations has that same format. To me it's just a bad business decision. I can forsee mass diary confusion. And I think CC would immediately cry foul and threaten legal action if it happened here. They certanly have a history of suing for lesser things than that.

I have to admit, given my competitive nature, I'd go toe to toe using some form of the name Rock. Even if it
was 97one Classic Rock, etc. or World Class Rock (actually having given this no thought prior to this, there
has to be a great monikor, these are just tried and true fairly boring ones.) Heck, even Q-Rock, as lame as
that is is better than Classic Hits. Using Classic Hits means, to me, second rate, not 'real' rock, boring, etc.
I still think a real rock station would do fine. It's not an easy sell. On second thought, it's still Crumulus.
They'd blow it in a second. Smarter to sign the damn thing off. Forget I said anything.

LMAO! That was funny Tibbs, I liked that, I know how you feel sometimes. Last one out, turn off the lights and lock up. I needed that chuckle today.
