I hear there was an all staff meeting today (Monday) at Clear Channel Tucson. Rumor mill flying about format change-can't get any more details-anybody contribute?
 
Unless 97.1 streams that's a good way to kill it. And even if it streams it has probably lost most of its audience.
 
It didn't really have much of an audience to begin with. Most potential listeners
probably didn't want to put up with the garbage signal--think phone call with the
"high end" (of which there really isn't) sliced off even further. And when they had
the I-CRAP turned on...hoo boy, even worse! ::)
 
Listened for a while this morning to 1450 and morning guy Allan Michaels,who I think sounds good and up ,was informing listeners of the change to Funny 1450 at 10 am..and he and the Oldies will be at 97.1 HD 2. Are there that many HD radios in Tucson to make a move like that and sent him to no-mans land??? Why would they do that to him,again and to the oldies music?
 
Alan Michaels already has his joke list ready..."A priest, a duck and a yak walk in to a bar......all right everybody...got that answer in 60 seconds"
 
Didn't some station in the Phoenix area try the comedy format a few years ago? I don't think it lasted very long.

1450 and 97.1 both have about the same poor coverage. I suspect that most of the HD radios in Tucson are in a building at Fort Lowell and Oracle. The rest are on North Country Club.
 
Was Alan Cook still the PD at Oldies 1450? If so, did he survive this?

AC was gone from CC quite sime time ago if I recall. There was a comedy station in Phoenix several years ago...also on a weak AM signal.

They could play the audio from the city council meetings and get big laughs. A little programming tip for them.
 
That poor excuse for a signal @ 1450 should have been retired long ago.

What's the over/under for this format??
 
The PD or exec that decided to kill the oldies and put on that comedy capers should be canned. What are they thinking?
 
Oldies or Classic Hits is a viable format and PPM friendly. It is amazing that a full signal FM isn't doing it NOW!!! Wonder if Rich Brother is available. Tucson radio is really in the doldrums nowadays. Too bad. Because a revival of the old KTKT sound would be a welcome addition to the radio dial (excuse me... stream (sic)). For the last few years, when I visit Tucson, it's either CD's or the MP3 player. Consolidation has done a wonderful job in destroying the AM & FM bands. By the way, KHYT is NOT a Classic Hits station. They should call it K-Slow Ride. Is that the only song in their library??? pretty lame.
 
I was recently in a car with a HD radio and tried to get the OLDIES where Allan Michaels is supposed to be "marooned" to-there was no such signal. Where is he? Did Clear Channel do something with the "signal"?
What about this-maybe I have TOO much time on my hands but-get a few of the Radio personalities who have a following in the Greater Tucson area and put them on a "Real Oldies" format signal. Whether it's an good AM signal or maybe a weaker FM stick. Jocks like-Bobby Lewis,AC Cook,Allan Michaels,Jim Bednarik,Ed Alexander,Andy Taylor,Betsy Bruce-you get the idea.AND promote the station and personalities-.now THAT would be a fun station to listen to-live and local. It couldn't hurt and might even make some advertising dollars..
 
In an age of Ipod and instant music fix nobody follows personality radio like they did 30 years ago....those are all excellent people mentioned, but a 24 hour personality driven music would take lots and lots of money and there is more profit with a couple of drive time people and liners up the rest of the day...... :mad:

Hmmm. Guess it didn't work so well in this mid-market community, according to the suits at CC. Ya had to know that putting that format on 1450 was putting a stake in its heart.
 
Sorry, Alan, but it's been at least a decade since KOOL's playlist was "'50s, '60s and early-to-mid '70s". Mid-'60s to mid-'80s is where they're at nowadays. Anything '50s is the kiss of death: Way too old of a demographic.
 
I have to seriously disagree with you 99ktkt. I do regular performances for all age groups and the 50's & early 60's are still alive. This is especially true in Mexican Hispanic markets. Almost any perfoming group has 'In The Still Of The Night, Angel Baby, I Only Have Eyes For You, Sleepwalk, I'm Sorry, and many, many, more 50's & early 60's songs in their line-up. Not to mention Elvis tunes. You are really out of touch on this one.

Unfortunately, this is the kind of thinking that prevails in the Tucson market. That's what makes Tucson radio PATHETIC.

By the way, I'm an alumni of 70's and 80's Tucson radio.
