It's about time...

I for one personally applaud the "Primary Editorial Voice" on "Ohiomediawatch" for the recent "Hiatus Post". The "comment" portion of OMW has become nothing more than a trash bin of tastelessness, and home to envy, resentment and a profound lack of professional courtesy. Nothing but bitter diatribes instead of the sharing of useful information... inappropriate and immature personal attacks instead of congratulatory remarks! It certainly makes you question the true character of some of these on-line attackers!

Imagine if other forms of business had the same type of "specific" forum that radio (professionals) have to voice their opinions. Do you think that Tony at the Cleveland Ave. Burger King would be on there talking trash about Bob at the State St. McDonalds?... Or how about setting up an on-line message board so that Kevin at Downtown Ford can talk about the bad customer service that Kelly gives at Courtesy Kia. Now wouldn't that be just completely asinine???

Radio of course is extrememely competitive and sometimes cutthroat by nature because of everything that is at stake, but we all know just how fast the radio revolving door spins... the guy you pass judgment on one day could be your boss or co-worker in a couple of months... maybe sooner than that! I realize that we all have our personal opinions of others in the industry, and the likelihood of message board utopia is never going to happen, but I applaud OMW in the fact that they are at least attempting to clean up a site that should be useful and beneficial for all area media professionals. Remember, we are the fortunate ones... I'm sure that there are plenty of factory workers and burger flippers that would trade places with you in a second!

Well, Zat...

I never read any of the comments, but overall the blog was informative.

Are we REALLY the "fortunate ones"? I guess that depends on IF you are where you want to be in this business. I was one of those "factory workers" who took a step to get into this business. However, I didn't realize that I'd be stuck as a board-op for the next 50 years!! What am I trying to convey? I'd assume that it is better to be stuck in a dead-end job in radio than to be stuck in a dead-end job as an Acme-Gridley operator. At least in radio you don't get cutting oil splashed on you, nor do you have to handle heavy metal bars...

OMW has exhibited the patience of Job at times in the writing of his blog, in addition of being a good friend to alot of us. My blog was created, not as a media blog, but as a vehicle for me to express my interests. OMW gave me a plug in his blog, and I'm grateful for that.

He has taken alot of crap on the other message boards, specifically, cleveland.com, and from the BigChuck and Lil John fan club. Most of the stuff he's had to endure was unmerited.

So OMW, if you're reading this, have a good rest. Come back refreshed. I put on my OMW link at my blog "gone fishing". When you get back I will replace it with "New and improved"

I agree with WIXY on this one. OMW is a great source for information. The personal attacks are pretty bad at times. For the most part, the folks who post on there are knowledgeable people in the business or who have been in the business. I'm thankful it's not on the level of the forums on Cleveland.com, where the loser male fantasy world is explored on an almost daily basis.

Zatsthat supports the Clear Channel way of doing business. I can understand why he doesn't like attacks. Clear Channel employees try to cover their ears every time someone points out how the company screws people and what a morally bankrupt company they are. They pretend that the corrupt business practices of Clear Channel have not hurt and ruined thousands of families and careers.

Zatsthat thinks that, in radio, entertainment is "secondary." He has lost the ideals and morals that every good radio announcer holds close to heart. He smiles when he swallows the Clear Channel corporate cut-throat way of doing business. He thinks it tastes good.

StarkCounty... Your assumptions are waaaaaay off base. You don't know me personally and you don't know what I've been through. It's quite obvious that you are a bitter person and one that enjoys the 3rd grade banter and personal attacks. Your missing the whole point here. It's not about me loving everything CC does, it's about the garbage. You like the attacks because you get the chance to anonymously say the things that you wouldn't have the courage to say to someones face. It's people like you that have OMW comment sections shut down.

Nobody cares about your bitter rants. If you have nothing constructive to add to the board, then maybe you should think twice about saying some of the things that you do. CC practices business like a thousand other companies. You or someone you know happened to lose their job, and now we have to read your sour tales of despair and woe. Get another job... thousands of people do it every single day! And if you think that radio is truly about entertainment, then you obviously can't see the forest through the trees. Everyone has the right to be upset over a lost job, but if you truly have a "career", then you would land on your feet and move on!

You go along to get along... and if something happens to you along the way, accept it and move forward. Maybe you should grow up and swallow that sometime, before you start spewing illogical, adolescent compost about people and subjects you know little about. :-X

OMW has said that the blog comments are not meant to take the place of a message board to attack/slander anyone. I have said in the past that I don't work in radio nor do I ever hope to. That being said, I have never seen such venom as I have on various radio message boards when somebody wants to slander Q92 or Clear Channel or WHBC, etc....I have come to understand that radio is very competetive and I realize some cant use their real names on here. Theres no reason to be as nasty as some can be. I used to have people accuse me of working in the business. That is so funny. I have been working as a stockperson in a Canton Supermarket for over 15 years..as far from radio as anyone..

I don't know where this idea came from that before CC, working in radio was like working at the General Motors assembly plant in 1970 (lifetime security). Losing jobs suck, no question! But Mom and Pop fired as many people in their day as CC does today. I would hope no one allows their family to be "ruined" by a radio company..and for the most part no one is expecting some kind of lifetime job security in anything, let alone radio (no matter who owns it).

Excellent reply gr8oldies :D I couldn't have put it any better! It's pretty much a given that when you work in radio, there really is no "security". It's a business of constant change and it's been like that for years and years. The slander and hateful posts come from bitter people, plain and simple!

That also happens when your forum name contains popular call letters, and you come off sounding as if you have a clue. But then Tim, you could fool me if I didn't know better. 8)

the pimary editorial voice-tm of omw runs a clean and honest blog. it is a source of education for those in the business, those out of the business and those who are fans of the business. oa takes the time to moderate the comments section on his blog to keep it clean and healthy. tell the truth folks, was it really necessary to have 103 comments on how keith kennedy launched whof/my101.7?? let oa enjoy his rest and come back to continue to educate us. as a reader who fits all 3 identities, i look forward to his return.

And until he returns, utilize the "no fewer than three message boards" to express your thoughts.

[EDIT]

Funny how people single out Clear Channel. Obviously because some of the members of the Clueless Clan can't make any valid points. Why don't you take a look at what certain former executives of now-defunct Enron did to thousands of it's employees and retirees.

Oh...let me remind you too, that radio is a business. Just like anything else out there. Companies screw people everyday. You either learn to deal with it and bounce back stronger.

[EDIT-inflammatory]

I agree on the excellent posts here.

Radio has also become, like it or not, a business where one has to constantly adapt to survive. That means
learning to do things other than just an airshift. It means learning to do production and imaging well. It means being willing to help out in a news department in a pinch. Or voice tracking a station whose music one doesn't necessarily "like". Maybe even helping engineering on a project.

And, the one thing that's certain about radio...it will continue to change. Those who adapt to the changes will continue to work in radio. Those who can't...or won't will be the bitter folks you will sometimes read on these boards constantly complaining how radio "sucks", the suits "won't listen" and "everything needs to go back to the way it was."

I worked in radio in the days of "was". For a mom and pop station that was paying me a whopping $200 a week to do a morning show. And, when we had two great ratings books in a row, I was refused when I asked for a $20 raise. I was working 60 hours a week and drove myself to the near brink of serious health issues trying to get the boss to "understand". I eventually figured out it was a lost cause and left to keep my health and sanity. But, I wouldn't have traded that experience for the world. Having to do everything in that station prepared me for the flexibility I have to show today.

I still enjoy getting up in the morning to go to work. And, I don't regret working in radio.
