It's Baaaaaacccccccccccccckkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk

Xmas music on K1047-7 today....PUKE!!!! Nothing on 102.9. I hope they can show some restraint. At least until black Friday!!! Please!!!! Xmas tunes on WSPA as well tonight.

Christmas K and the "Holiday Lite"

Yep... Seems like K kicked off things at 5PM with Andy Williams' "The Most Wonderful Time of the Year." Of course, not long after, WLYT picked up Delilah's holiday feed (I'm guessing---Christmas songs are listed on YES).

However, these are probably "Christmas Preview" weekends. The REAL thing usually doesn't start until the week of Thanksgiving, if not maybe a week earlier.

I think it's too early for Christmas Music, which proves the "commericalization"
of Christmas is now over the air just as much as it is in the stores!

Yeah, I'm not Bah Humbug, but, I'll miss listening to Lite102.9 (especially Jim Shafer & the Disco Inferno & the weekend shows) for the next two months - I could care less about K104.7.

It's funny -- I'm the exact opposite. I'll be tuning in to K and Lite occasionally for the Christmas Preview Weekends, but I certainly won't miss the Disco Inferno and 70's/80's Weekends. I know some people who listen to Lite at work, but automatically turn the radio off at 5PM on Fridays and work a final hour in silence. It's just such a shift from their regular programming. I wonder if their weekend audience is drastically different from their weekday audience.

Now, it's nice to know that the stations will be doing Christmas for the weekends for a while - I certainly don't expect 102.9 and 104.7 to play all-Christmas music all the time for a couple of weeks now.

I am with AMFM, I enjoy 102.9 much more. K-104.7 is older, boring, sleepy. I am 35 so maybe that has something to do with it. I listen to 107.9 and 102.9 every weekend. During the week, I suffer with the static of 97.3. I listen to 95.1 until a rap song comes on. Charlotte needs a good Hot AC, badly.

FM is dead...XM baby, that's the way to go. Just say no to the endless stream of commercials and boring music rotations/jock liners. A good signal everywhere.

The prevailing thought is the station that goes Christmas first owns Christmas. Over commercialized yes, but it works and they will keep doing it till it no longer works.

Back in the '70s when I was at WMNC, it was a continual battle to keep Christmas music off the air until the Program Director said it was time. Well It was a battle with one person anyway.

We had a Woman's / Housewife type of show from 9 - 10 am every day, hosted by a lady who had been at the station for well over 20 years. She worked in the front office and sometimes acted like she owned the station.

For several years, Dan Deaton and myself hid all the Christmas records about a week before Halloween, and kept them hidden until it was time to use them. We used a different placed every year because she kept hunting for them. It got to the point that we had to search her office and we found Christmas records hidden there every year.

If we didn't do that, she would start playing Christmas on the day after Halloween, at least one a day, maybe more.

She eventually retired from the station, and that problem went away. But she is still around town, I see her occasionally.

Holy Cow..Dan Deaton...a name I have not heard in a very long time....jtudor...where do you know Dan from? Are you still in touch with him? any info would be great....if it is indeed the same Dan.

Lite 102.9 did not say that it was the Christmas Preview Weekened, they were just saying, "It's that time to start playing those Holiday tunes" agian!!

Dangerous Dan, the Big 1430 Hit Man!

We worked at WMNC together for 3 years or so. then he moved to Florida for a while.

Last I heard of him was about 5 years ago he was in North Wilkesboro at WKBC. He was around when a group of us were trying to put together a reunion of WMNC personalities for the 50th anniversary of the station. We wanted to have as many of the old guard on the air for a day on the anniversary. It didn't happen because the Coopers had no interest in the reunion or doing much of anything on the 50th.

Whoa a minit, I guess that was more like 10 years ago, since WMNC is actually celebrating it's 60th this year, and they are really making a big deal of it. WOW how time flies.

Beacuse they are copying each other...K and Lite. Lite can't say preview weekend because what if K has Xmas music on Monday...Huuuhhhhhh! That would be untolerable. (sarcasm) Get some originality people! Lite needs to hand the AC reigns toi K and flip to a "Jack" format like cc did with Lite 96.7 in Columbia. There ratings are good too on 96.7. The light ac crowd went to B106.7 I am sure.

Well, it looks like all is back to the status quo at K-104.7, and the "Christmas Lite" has been turned off for the time being.

My guess is one more Christmas preview weekend and then 100% Christmas music starting on Friday, November 16.

Thanks jtudor...Dan hired me while I was in college in Florida. He was a great voice and a great talent. I often wonder where he ended up because I know he left Florida in the late 90's I think.

As far as Xmas music galore...yes it is that time again, much to the jocks chagrin, and quite frankly it doesn't matter who starts it full time and when, it is here until Dec 26th and we all need to get used to it or turn it OFF.

You're right Holly. Boy am I glad I don't have to deal with it this year. I will admit it was fun watching the two stations race to be the first to play Holiday tunes.

It wasn't that long ago stations went though a period where they avoided playing holiday music. Looks like things have now gone the other way.

I like Christmas music but not the happy ho ho stuff. More like the serious melodic stuff they don't play very much. Most of the Christmas music heard on the radio has been around so long that I am burned out on it big time!

Mike

Well Clear Channel has their Lite 93.9 in Chicago playing Christmas already. They could be playing it a little early as they thought 105.9 was going to play Christmas music before they flipped to FRESH 105.9 but they didn't.

As for Charlotte, NC who usually goes all Christmas first? And doesn't every year K 104.7 does better with Christmas then Lite 102.9?

I think Lite and K always go within minutes of each other...but as much as we make fun of it and hate it by day 2, our best ratings were when we went all Christmas on Halloween night. I will never forget it!! We haven't done it since, but just goes to show you what the ratings say. unbelievable really.

There's no doubt people want to hear Christmas music -- a LOT of Christmas music! And, if it gets ratings, it's a win-win for (most of) the listeners and the radio station. Personally, I prefer K's approach to Christmas music, although it can get repetitive. A lot of the songs on K are TRUE Christmas classics that other stations usually avoid. Even though 102.9 plays its fair share of Christmas classics, the newer songs that I'm unfamiliar with often make me flip right back to K.

I can't wait to get down to Charlotte for Thanksgiving and enjoy Christmas K. My local "Lite" WLTW balances the classics with more current Christmas songs (and they haven't even started yet), so K will be a nice change.

Ironically, two of my relatives in Charlotte got satellite radio (1 XM and 1 SIRIUS) in the past year, yet they both plan to turn on K-104.7 for Christmas music, just because they like the sound of it... Go figure!

Regardless, good luck with Christmas songs this year on "Christmas K-104.7!"

XM has already started Christmas music on one channel, 103 is Holly!!

Later they will have 3 or 4 more channels if they do as in years past.

My favorite is the Special XMas channel where they play all the offbeat Christmas music, the novelty stuff. Where they come up with all of it I have no idea but it sure is fun and a great break from the normal. . . or is there any normal anymore????
