It's Beginning to Sound a lot like Christmas!

Doesn't matter. That many people do not listen to Christmas music off the radio in NOVEMBER, before turkey day in any market. Check back after 12/15.

And yet many people DO, and there are more people who choose to listen to Christmas in November than any other format. That's why radio stations play it. They're not doing it for their own personal gratification or some conspiracy.

I am definitely NO general manager, but I would certainly argue that flipping to Christmas early in November confers many more benefits compared to waiting until the "conventional" time to flip (either right after Thanksgiving, or on December 1). By flipping early, you secure your spot as a player in the holiday book, and get the maximum return on your investment with all of the holiday advertising. If you're late to the party, you're behind the proverbial "eight ball." Not to mention, it's possible that other market stations could have already completed their flip, making a Christmas format less and less advantageous from a programming standpoint. The real questions seems to be: how will 94.1 compare to KPLZ this year? We already know that KRWM seems to come out on top, but will the early flip for "The Sound" give them a significant bump over Star...

What is the "conventional" time? Nobody agrees on when to start. It's time to revise the Benjamin Franklin line to "death, taxes and people complaining about Christmas music launches".

Not really, as many stations do programming and marketing of it differently.

If you're late to the party, you're behind the proverbial "eight ball."
Again, not really. Christmas music reputations are not built on when a station first plays Mariah Carey or Jose Feliciano each year.

Not to mention, it's possible that other market stations could have already completed their flip, making a Christmas format less and less advantageous from a programming standpoint.
This is another example of how it's easy to spend someone else's money. Playing Christmas music looks good for some stations on a radio ratings webpage, but the fact of the matter is not everybody sticks around to hear the Christmas music, nor do all of the Christmas music listeners stay when regular programming returns.

The real questions seems to be: how will 94.1 compare to KPLZ this year? We already know that KRWM seems to come out on top, but will the early flip for "The Sound" give them a significant bump over Star...
The Sound flipped one hour before Warm did. That is not going to make one bit of difference, Christmas music reputations are not built that way and in that short of time.

I think the debate on when to start Christmas music is silly. It has been proven that stations that go early are successful, generally. We all have opinions of "when Christmas begins", etc., but in the end the ratings and revenue decide it. I won't argue with that. If I think it is too early, I won't listen. But if others are listening, then more power to those stations who are creating a product that is wanted. Pretty simple stuff.

Hallmark does "Christmas in July". I think that is ridiculous, but many others don't. So my opinion really doesn't matter at the end of the day as long as it works for them.

Listened to Santa FM- 101.5 yesterday and they said - listen to us after Christmas and listen to the new Northwest Sound and let know what you think!

In a side note I noticed they have no HD signal. I haven’t listed them regularly in a long time- has it been like this for a while?

Hasn't KPLZ tweaked the format already? Their first stint as Santa FM brought more gold/recurrents to the regular playlist. Yet ratings are still at the bottom. I mean, Sinclair has nothing to lose as this is their only music format they own.

Are they really at the bottom or do they still look good in Women 25-54?

I don't think KPLZ has ever had HD.

Bob's correct. KPLZ has never had IBOC hash on either side of 101.5.

Kent plays Christmas music for one month just to be a nuisance to Warm and Sound, then come December 26 a fresh gimmick for the next 11 months.

Well, unless Bill W has broken the simulcast of KBKW on 100.5 or flipped 103.9, I didn't hear any Christmas music out of the local stations in the harbor when I was down there. I just got back from my grandpa's in Pacific County a little while ago. Some other observations of note:
The K-Love relayer on 89.3 in Aberdeen seems to be off. Not sure if this is temporary or permanent, kind of hoping for the latter as 101.3 does just fine in that area, although I think 89.3 gets out a little better in that direction. Also noticed the audio on KACS has gotten pretty bad, sounded like a low quality internet stream. They also appear to have new translator at 90.1 in addition to the already existing 91.3. They are becoming notorious for this. I also noticed the 90.5 was mixing with something else, but didn't stick around for an ID. Station appeared to be running some kind of talk format. The KNKX translator that was at 90.3 seems to have reduced power and s now at 90.7. Only other curious observation was dead air on 92.1 with a very strong signal in stereo.

KBSG 90.1 is // KACS. KACW 91.3 and KBSG 90.1 are just a mile or two away from each other with nearly the same coverage. What a waste of having a second relayer. I notice KACS is now blotting out KRWM 106.9 with a translator in Aberdeen, but it's been around for a while. And besides KRWM is hardly audible out that way.

Having been the originator of both of these stations, I know that they're both SUPPOSED TO be directional, each serving different areas from the same tower. Since the owners don't apparently care about man's law, I suspect the directionality is on a par with the modulation, which blasts over the first and probably second adjacents with maximum overmodulation, as of my last trip through anyway. They do a good job of hogging that entire segment of the band in Raymond and South Bend.

Ok, I thought that was illegal to have two stations simulcasting with identical coverage. Those signals were equally strong where I was.

I did not see any 92.1's nearby on construction permits or whatever. Nearest to Raymond are the KCMS translator in Aberdeen or the CSN translator in Kamilche.
Anyways.....I don't remember KRWM doing a 'Christmas Countdown', but apparently this year they are. This weekend Shellie Hart will host the Top 100 Christmas Songs at noon Sat/Sun. I'm assuming Stop the Cavalry and Sippin' in Seattle's Latte Land will NOT be on this countdown, but you never know. I mean, they were KRWM staples back in the day. I've never heard them anywhere else.
