It's Come To This: WDCD-AM Silent STA?

I see that radio locator removes the American station quicker than you can say the word, 'silencio'. Why are the silent, or non-licensed Canadian AM stations can still be looked at on that site ?

Because whoever's running the site seems to think FCC data on Canadian stations is a reliable indicator of what's actually operating in Canada. (It's not, and it's not meant to be - the Canadian stations appear in the FCC database only to tell US applicants what they have to protect.)

Or maybe they know and just don't think it's worth the time or expense to get more accurate data.

You can get anything on the web for free...but sometimes you get exactly what you pay for. :D

Scott,

I am not trashing on the site, I think it is a great site. Just about every Amercian radio station owes a huge thank you to these people for helping with their media kits. ;D

While channel surfing I heard a promo on 96,7 FM that April 1st is the shutdown date for 1540 AM. I'm a little confused on how the call letters shake out. My car's digital readout lists 96.7 FM as WPTR "Lite FM"(Not "Light FM") while "Radio Locator" has this frequency listed as WDCD. Is Crawford holding on to the legendary WPTR call letters?

The FM is Wptr, they switched the calls back and forth a few times, Wptr originally on the am then to the fm then back to the am (Legends) now Wptr is on the fm. The rds read out is what they put on it and may not be actual to the calls. Wdcd was on the am and fm from time too. The fcc application (yes) does say it has applied to go silent on April 1st

The irony in all this is that 1540 has been signing off at 10pm or thereabouts for a few years now, and tonight is the first time I've heard em on past midnight (getting buried by Toronto & KXEL as usual, a mere 18 miles from the tx site inside the pattern). And judging by the signal strength over the past couple of days, it certainly sounds like they're running the rig at 10kw again.

I sure as hell hope Crawford/DJRA sells 1540 once and for all. I tell ya, they might be a good neighbor in Rochester & Buffalo, but they've done our radio dials few if any favors. Then again, setting up shop with Christian radio in an area with two well established godcasters wasn't the smartest business plan in the first place. Air1 & K-Love were just the final nails in the coffin.

It would've been better in the long run if the car dealer kept WPTR in the fold.... and that's not saying a whole lot. lol
Who knows... maybe Anastos will step up and buy/lease it... would be nice to hear WABY's programming on the big 1540.

I heard something about Anastos might be selling out also. I wonder what kind of shape the 1540 tower site is in. If the ground system is severly rotted away, their signal might be not that great.

My understanding is the ground system was repaired or replaced when the rest of the physical plant was upgraded. Not that it really matters, since they're transmitting from what amounts to be the areas biggest sandbar. You can always see their groundwave signal notch up a tad during & just after a good rain.

Read David Eduardo's post carefully. I'm a fan of AM radio, but you'd have to be insane to buy 1540. It's all fun and games until you have to pay the bank and the electric bill at the end of the month. Music on AM, even with good processing, sounds awful. Talk is just too expensive for a start-up. Save your money. Or buy the station, flatten it, sell the iron and copper and put up a storage mall. Sometimes you have to be cruel to be kind.
