It's official. RED APPLE MEDIA owns WABC.

I suggest that for parts of the day there be talk programming concerning lifestyle issues and personal finance. The station has nowhere to go but up at this point. Would giving the station a new identity by dropping the WABC calls make a difference?

It's a standalone AM. Any changes the new owner might make will go largely unnoticed.

What "identity" would they have? There are a lot of old timers who still pine for the MusicRadio days.

But most people don't even know the station exists. To them, WABC is Channel 7.

Isn't that what WABC and WOR have been doing on the weekends for years? It's called brokered programming. How is that working out with the ratings?

Maybe he meant doing such talk with live, local, young, hip hosts who'll get the lost generations to discover the wonders of AM radio.

HaHaHaHaHa! Stop! You're killin' me!

Ohhhhhh ... you mean like Clark Howard and Dave Ramsey. :)

Hey, actually, WICC (Bridgeport) was getting $100 thousand a year to clear Ramsey. It was a Cumulus deal. Not sure if that's still happening with Connoisseur.

Other examples of Lifestyle Programming include Kim Komando, the late Dr. Joy Browne, Dr. Laura (who's schlock is still on satellite radio), the now defunct NPR show Car Talk, and other special interest shows from a wide variety of topics including, pets and/or animals, travel, cigars, food, paranormal, etc.

Marc ... if there are open blocks (not sold) on Saturday and Sunday, why not? You're not going to get the satellite shows but Kim Komando, the cars, pets, Handel on the Law, and others, why not? You just won't be making any money. Of course, if someone walks in with $$$$, those programs will be tossed or end up at 2 in the morning. Weekends will, pretty much, always be a wasteland.

Bruce, FYI ... my post (response), just above, was also meant for you. I didn't mean to leave you out of the conversation.

Sort of curious that the WABC web site still links its privacy policy and terms of service to Cumulus.

Perhaps they haven't gotten around to creating their own legal pages.

Programming aside, Mr. Catsimatidis now officially owns 77 WABC. Let the hourly Gristedes ads begin! :)

Gristedes, yikes! Over-priced, dingy, and depressing. Apparently, Catsimatides hasn’t been to a Whole Foods or other upscale markets. No amount of advertising could help Gristedes. But, WABC is sort of the Gristedes of radio stations, so, I don’t foresee significant improvements.

Red Apple took over at 77 WABC this past Saturday. It will be interesting to see what local ownership does. The fun begins.

What would you like to happen? For me, live and local in afternoon drive would be a top priority. Get rid of Ben Shapiro or, at least, put him on late nights or overnights until something better comes along. How about Hot Talk? Let's have some fun and perhaps get some younger listeners?

Oh ... get an FM and simulcast. 103.9 (Cumulus) or 99.5 (Pacifica) perhaps?

Various people at am970, which airs Catsimatides’ show, seem to think they are candidates for shows on WABC because they know him, however, if they were any good, they wouldn’t still be at am970 in the first place.

WABC is apparently replacing Ben Shapiro (at least temporarily) with shows hosted by Steve Bannon and Rudy Giuliani who will no doubt speak at a speed most people can understand. That's a good thing.

But, true to form, these changes are NOT reflected on WABC's website (as of this posting.)

It's ironic that terrestrial radio stations go out of their way to divert their listeners' attention away from the focus of the on-air content by encouraging them to "go to the website" to look at stale YouTube videos or an unnecessary video stream of the host (this is supposed to be RADIO!) Yet when you go to the website for station information (the original purpose of these websites) it's almost NEVER up to date.

Maybe...if having an audience that's mainly over 60 is your goal. Shapiro has a younger fan base. The new owner is cutting costs with the web site. He apparently doesn't have a full time in-house web person.
