It's Official...WEXT is Switching to Spanish Language Format!

According to Tim Cuprisin of the Journal-Sentinel...

WEXT drops country to switch to a spanish language format. He quotes Kira LaFond, the GM, as saying it should start Friday morning.

It'll have a big following.

Guess that means WBJX is screwed at least somewhat.

Anybody know what Spanish format it will be?

Probably Spanish AC or Regional Mexican
______________

I actually think that's a great move. The hispanic audience around here is badly under served.
______________

All Access is reporting on its website today(September 14th) that Bustos Media Networks will handle the programming. In other words, look for this one to be Regional Mexican, since a majority of stations that Bustos owns are in this format.

Makes me wonder if that was the real reason for NM to move the transmitter to Oak Creek. If that's the case, they definitely will reach most of the Spanish speakers in Milwaukee. I forgot where my one friend in the downtown area told me where most hispanics live in Milwaukee. I know the primary contour doesn't cover the entire city and reception is iffy on the far north side and around Glendale & Brown Deer, with WTKM bleeding over at times.

I second that. Amazing that an FM station out of Chicago (WPPN) shows up occasionally in the Milwaukee-Racine ratings books when it is virtually static around Milwaukee. WIND also cracked a full share here at times when they had a Spanish-language format.

And WEXT is the perfect frequency to pull it off. The big boys in town are too content with what they already have (or are too adamant about trying to out-classic rock each other). And 104.7 hits the south side of Milwaukee and Racine very well (high concentrations of Hispanic residents). For a move-in with limited power like WEXT, they really needed to do a unique format. The Wolf was good, and ratings weren't all that bad (especially since, for some reason, classic country is often a ratings dog), but it would never come close to being a real threat to FM106.

Maybe WBWI (92.5) will see the light, add some of the classic stuff and try to stop being merely the less corporate version of FM106. 92.5's tower is on the opposite side of the market from WEXT's, but there is some overlap. They could pick up some disenfranchised Wolf listeners, if they ever desired to extend their sphere of influence outside of West Bend.
______________

WPPN and WOJO come in pretty well in Racine.
______________

I've gotten WOJO in downtown Milwaukee a couple of times clear as a whistle, even with primary coverage of WFZH over Milwaukee. I don't know if the height & low wattage is what's making WOJO come in clear in Milwaukee without 1st adjacent interference.
