It's that time of year again...

So, did WDOK change their minds about going all Christmas? 11:30 Sunday night and same ol' soft AC.

Mix was the first in Cleveland to ever go all-Christmas, doing "MixMas" in 2001. They have yet to do it again until this year.

WDOK flipped at 7am today

Remember also that--PPM or not---WDOK had a spectacular December monthly last year with the Xmas music. Only makes sense that others would jump sooner to head them off this year.

Regarding WTAM-FM: Depends on the current billing on Mix, vs. extra rate for WTAM ads on FM with additional ratings to justify.

Yes, they might wait for Lanigan to leave and do it on WMJI, which was the original WTAM-FM by the way, many years ago. WMJI used to be very strong outside of Lanigan in the 90s and early 2000s, but other WMJI time periods are not consistently as strong anymore. But seems unlikely that they would either wait, or trash the Majic brand which is a lot stronger than the MIX brand in this market.

If CC were to blow up an FM to extend the WTAM brand to FM, it wold be WMVX and not Majic. I still think, though, that after the holidays, WMVX will re-emerge as a repositioned station... maybe GenX? For the short term, if WTAM appears on the FM dial, it will be via a translator and not a full-stick FM.

That would invoke some creativity on CC's part, which I don't see happening. A station like Gen-X is from 1980 until 2005... the current incarnation of Mix without currents. Or what WMJI will be in a matter of years, should they live on. Besides... Gen-X still smacks me of another "Jammin' Oldies" flash-in-the-pan corporate-dreamed-up format-of-the-month.

As for Majic, that brand has been badly tarnished as it is over the past five years, especially after Dave P. left the building. They have had NO PD since Meg Stevens left. And in comparison to when Denny Sanders programmed it ten years ago, it's been a terrible downslide. Lanigan is holding the station up from falling among or below the middle-of-the-pack ranks that WMVX currently enjoys.

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't WMJI #1 recent PPM? Last I saw Collier is Top 5 middays. PM drive is where WMJI gets hurt. The PD is Keith Abrams, who programmed classic hits KIMN/Denver (as did Popovich when he was in Denver). He and his brother Kris, recently longtime OM/PD at KOOL/Phoenix, are veteran oldies/classic hits programmers.

With due respect to Keith....IMO WMJI could use some market veterans with a big Q rating. Nothing against Jim Hart... but....the weekends are lacking from a personality standpoint....and it's the same old song musically save for a Twin Spin weekend here and there. I would add some talent with market history and even worked at WMJI in it's "hey day", like Howitt and/or Luther Heggs. Even Norm N Nite for a regular gig. Bring back theme weekends (Motown, Beatles, Elvis, Girl Groups/Wonder Women, etc, etc ), which cume high. Some could argue that it's going backward adding talent from days gone by... I don't see it that way. Scott and Luther would really help weekends shine.

I agree with VODOOD, bring back to C-Town the voices we heard on WMJI, especially on weekends, I too would like to see Luther, Howitt and especially letting Norm Nite bring his own taste of music to the air perhaps on Saturday evening's with those rare 50's and early 60's, and with interviews just like he did awhile back, this would then please the listeners with their "Own Special" four hour show that they can call their own show once again.

I also miss hearing the late Chris Quinn since his passing, but there are those who would fit the weekends on Magic who are still around but out of "on air" work, and have them go LIVE once again, WMJI would could sure use a live weekend face lift...

If they were going to change, why brand it as Mixmas? Christmas music brings a huge cume, and why continue the mix brand if you were going to blow it up? The exception would be if 106.5 became WTAM-FM.

WMVX most likely went this early because they knew WDOK could not due to their Rainbow Radiothon.

Agreed on both counts.

1) WDOK is doing a countdown on their website that indicates they'll start the holiday tunes (if my math is right) at just after midnight next Friday morning. Sure, they could always jump early now that 106.5 is on board, but they are probably going to stick with next Friday.

2) WMVX emerges the first workday in January either as its old "Mix" self, or as the new FM home of WTAM. I don't see much of a chance for anything else.

WTAM-FM "Rush Radio 106.5," maybe?...

I think there are a lot of factors here regarding a potential FM play for WTAM, and nothing is by far certain.

CC has generally not moved AM news/talk powerhouses like WTAM to FM, even as simulcasts - the WGY move in Albany was the first they've done, IIRC.

They will probably only make the move only when the demographics start looking REALLY bad... in this market, they have no prospect of a genuine in-market FM news/talk competitor coming in, anyway, and WTAM is not in ratings trouble.

It'll take a combination of aging demos for WTAM and ratings trouble for one of the CC FMs, or a change when Lanigan retires at WMJI, and none of that may be happening this soon...even after "Mixmas" ends.

1590 WAKR has gone all Christmas, playing older tunes, which I actually enjoy more than what Mix or WDOK are playing. I heard a Celine Dion version of "Feliz Navidad" on Mix a few weeks back, and I still haven't forgiven them for that. That is something that should never have existed.

So, we've got The Fish, WDOK, Mix (as well as area CCers WBBG and WHOF, which seem to all have the same playlist), and WAKR. I seem to remember WHBC going all Christmas last year, but I guess with WHOF doing it they're sticking with the AC.

The best Christmas music was always WMJI in the 90s and early 2000s. Rock Christmas, R & B Christmas, some standards, very cool. Where is James Brown "Santa Claus Goes Straight To The Ghetto?" How about Bob Seger "Sock It To Me Santa"? Ever since the corporates took over MJI, they have been playing the usual Christmas stuff over and over and over and over, not to mention lots of boring Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey Christmas material. I heard Kenny G doing "Away In A Manger" last year on MJI. Bletch!

I think THREE stations doing all-Christmas is way too much. It would be better two or even just one. Speaking of The Fish, are they still going ahead with an all-national morning show. Haven't heard anything regarding it.

For the record...

WMVX has just gone back to the gold-based AC format. Status quo. YAWN. ::)

I can't see the all-Xmas stunt doing that well for them, only because it was a three-way battle for the Ho-Ho-Ho holiday pie. And if you listen to WDOK or The Fish by habit, chances are you stuck with them and didn't go to WMVX, regardless of how early they started.

Time will tell whenever the PPMs come out who really came out the winners in this...
