J93.3 Slow Death

Tom G: I appreciate what you're saying here. I'm not a perfect person. Never said I was. I wish I had the patience of a saint that people like you must have. I've also said MANY nice things about J here. Look further up this thread and I openly said that the time I was there were great times that I was very grateful for.

I guess I could just act like the many people I knew and loved there who were let go don't matter to me.

But they do (and did).

I guess I could close my eyes and pretend that J isn't a business, just like Clear Channel and Cox and others.

But they are.

And as a business they've struggled over the years for years on end. Imaging is but one part of some of the things that, IMO, could have been done better.

This forum isn't church. It's a discussion forum about radio - all things radio. From personalities to policies to the rise and fall of stations. My gosh, should people not have gone on and on about all the things that brought the downfall of 99x, 96 rock and others?

I'm not the only one who is stymied by the decades of change at J everywhere BUT at the top. That's just a mystifying business scenario and many besides me question whether it was time for a change at the helm long ago. Why am I not allowed to voice that?

I bear no ill will towards J, Rick, Jerry, or anyone there. You may not believe it, but I really, really don't.
I'm ecstatic to hear Sheila back there.

But that does NOT mean I have to bless, carte' blanche', all of the moves they've made over the years. I honestly hate seeing a station that was in its prime when I joined them fall down and struggle to stay alive for a decade.
Could I have done better? Probably not. But it's a free country and open discussion is good.

As you may know, Tom, I'm in the freelance voiceover biz. There's a voiceover forum that heavily regulates what people can say on the site, especially when people who really shouldn't be in the v/o biz ask for feedback. On that forum, if you say anything negative, your post is usually deleted. So that begs the question: Do people want to hear the truth, or do they just want to feel good?

If everyone wants to feel good, then I'll throw compliments on everything J has done and wish them all the best.

But it won't change the current situation.

Geesh! I misspelled her name not once but three times! I'm sorry Sheila - the senior moments come more and more often these days......
 
I feel compelled to add one more thing for Tom Golden's sake since I DO know Tom and value his opinion.

Open, frank, constructive discussion and criticism is good.
On those voiceover forums I mentioned in an above post, I've often been criticized when I did a rotten job of a sample narration I'd post. I could have gotten my feelings hurt (which is hard to NOT do) or thought the other guys were being nasty or envious.

OR... I could listen and say "Yeah, I could've done better on that one" and take the criticism to heart to improve. Which is what I try to do, even though it's often hard to do.

There is SO much criticism everywhere on these boards about radio operations everywhere. My God, look at the endless flak Clear Channel gets. Didn't you use to work for them, Tom? Was everything rosy there? Or could their current state of despair have been averted - maybe somewhat - by doing things better or differently?

Like I said, I'm sure not perfect. If I were to run a radio station it'd probably go dark within a few hours of me taking over. But listen to the other feedback throughout this thread. There ARE things that can be done better... not just at J, but in all stations' operations... in how I do my own work... and so on.

I never knew Monk and Kelly and hate that they were laid off. I wouldn't wish that on anyone. I hate that all of the part-timers were let go. That, too, is awful. But one change J did make that I believe WILL pay dividends is bringing Sheila back. That's certainly a good thing. Let's hope this is just the first of many such things that help J to bounce back.

Let's not become so defensive that we blind ourselves to areas that we - or those that we care about - might need to look into to be able to do better.
 
Despite the "recession", all of N. Ga. is growing, and the area south of Atlanta is just beginniing to boom. You've got an FM station with a good signal at 27kw. You've got a part of Atl and part of Columbus. Do you have creative management that can turn a slow death story into a success?

Check out WNGC; never has, nor will, hit Atlanta well, but almost every radio in Gainesville is tuned to it.

Play Christian songs and "family-friendly" secular music. Promote yourself in your coverage area. Quit worrying about what you don't have, and maximize what you do have. Become dependable and strong. Find ways to serve the public well enough to make people "need" you. Bloom where you're planted.

Like I said earlier---I remember this station was a blaster back in the 70's and was called WFDR, incredible signal. I believe it was like a soul format--But they were currents at the time...Why do they fix things when they are not broken---That is the trouble with radio today....GREEDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD
 
I will kudos to J93 on their website. They have a page talking about the departure of Monk and Kelly as well as the other people that were let go. Normally, a station will not mention anything about their recent cutbacks or talk about the on air personalities that were let go. This was very well written, and paid tribute to Monk and Kelly. Very classy.

They were let go because they were (technically) "part-time staffers". Is using this "reason" to get rid of on-air talent that doesn't work a full 40 hrs/wk. a trend in radio?

Agreed. I was shocked to see such frankness on a radio station's site, and it was a bittersweet tribute to all who were let go, but I admire J's blunt honesty and not trying to hide this from the listeners. Kudos to them on being so transparent about this.
 
In the case of J93 there is a lot is being said about signal. I think the wrong station was used to try the move-in. The old 93.5 WLJA Ellijay Ga should have swapped city of license with 100.1 Talking Rock GA., moved to a mountain near Jasper Ga. The old WLJA reached Cobb County from a tower north east of Ellijay. The spacing between 92.9 and 94.1 would have been good. The demos and population of the north side of Atl. are better the south side. You have a terrain advantage. I would use the same programming on both 93.5 93.7. I was part of a team looking trying to do something with WLJA in the 1990's. It did not happen and the current ownership has seen fit to let 93.5 go to Chattanooga and settle for 101.1
