Jack FM no more, it's now 95.7 Power FM

South Central so scared of protecting B 97.5 with Star 102.1 tied for second place, today, they flip 95.7 Jack FM to 95.7 Power FM to serve as a flanker station to protect their money maker WJXB. Of course it will be the same ole story, no jocks, no promotions, just the same ole story as Jack FM was. Randy Chambers of WIMZ to program the station.

With 95.7 Power FM sounding like Hot 104.5, the numbers are low for Hot, wouldn't be surprised if Hot flipped to a rock leaning format and go after South Centrals WIMZ or 94.3 The X!! ::)

Well isn't this great. Another station for us adults is gone. Why does this market refuse to program any music for anyone older than 35? When I moved here in '06, there was such great variety between Jack, Earl, and The Point. Now they are all gone.

Yesterday moving Star back to 93.1 would have been considered risky. Today it would be considered suicidal.

You're right about no jocks. According to their new website:

"95.7 Power FM plays the most contemporary hit music for Knoxville! The best of pop, urban, alternative, hip-hop, and rock music – all without any annoying DJ chatter. More Maximum Hits - less talk!"

But musically, they do not sound like Hot at all. They are much closer to Star. I don't see Hot changing, unless the numbers keep going down for some reason. Power sounds decent so far, I just wish they hadn't killed off Jack for it.

I guess this means SS feels confident about keeping 94.3 long-term, I had been told that they had done nothing with Jack the last year or so in case they needed to move The X format on short notice. Same person said they believed there were even liners cut just in case.

Wow, didn't see this one coming. But as a huge CHR fan, I can't say I'm disappointed. Lots of CHR's to listen to now (Star, Power, Electric, & Hot). Power is obviously a flanker to protect B97.5 (as CHR and AC tastes have grown much closer lately, Star became very threatening). But South Central does have CHR experience. WSTO Hot 96 Evansville, IN, which they own, has always been a great station. I wouldn't be surprised to see someone from there have a hand in programming Power as a jukebox/flanker.

Now the next big question, what about the now even bigger gaping hole for either classic hits or adult hits in the market? Surely this is big enough now that some underperforming station is gonna flip. It would be a no brainer for someone like 106.1, 96.7, or 105.3 to pick up a cheap, jockless, adult hits format (ala Jack FM, Bob FM, etc). It could be done more cheaply than what any of these are doing now, and would almost certainly garner more listeners. Or even an older based classic hits format (like True Oldies Channel), although I think a Jack FM adult hits format would be a wiser choice because of more desirable demographics. Anyway, between this hole and all of the Pirkle and Mike Hammond/Journal rumours, this could be an interesting market in the coming year.

Another interesting move would be if Journal could pry 100.3 away from Pirkle and place Q there. That would free 93.1 or 104.5 for an adult hits format. (most logical would be adult hits on 104.5's better signal & Hot moves to 93.1). Or if they just want to tick South Central off, they could get in a p**sing match and put an AC competitor on 104.5 to shave points from B97.5. Wow, I'm glad K-Town radio finally has some changes coming (this market is always so boring & status quo usually). Hope someone really shakes it up!

I think there is an underserved hole in the Knoxville market, the Classic Hits or Oldies adult listener. 35-54 in this generation is a key competitive demographic if you are going to compete with B97.5, especially female listen at work.

There is one way it wouldn't be considered "suicidal" or even "risky"... Put Star back on 93.1, where it belonged the whole time, and place an honest to goodness "EZ listening/MOR" format on 102.1. They would topple B97.5 so fast the shock waves would be felt for decades.

Of course they would never do that. There is a real lack of balls in this market.

Easy to say when it's not your balls on the chopping block. MOR?? Really??

Not a lack of balls, just good judgement. Personally, I don't think an older skewing AC would do that well (certainly not EZ/MOR), and even if it did pull numbers, it wouldn't matter because they would be unsellable. (due to the demos which would skew way out of the top of even the 25-54 group). As far as the CHR format "belonging on a smaller stick", I disagree wholeheartedly. The 18-34 demo it serves is very desirable to advertisers (just below the coveted 25-54), and a format dedicated to this group on at least one of the market's full power, class C stations is very wise.

Journal would have been better served by keeping their AC format in place on 102.1 and leaving the CHR format on 93.1.

In the long run they would have kept larger slices of the audience, and saved millions of dollars on failed format changes
and promotional campaigns.

As far as music goes, I listen to more music on the AM band in Knoxville than I do the FM band. AM 670 for Shannon's True Oldies, AM 850 for the country oldies, and AM 1040 also for country oldies - unfortunately they are all daytimers. If I'm on FM, I listen to 105.7 out of Crossville a good bit of the time and occasionally 101.5 from Tri-Cities. I cannot tolerate 103.5 - I sure prefer stations with live, local DJ's but those people really won't shut up plus the limited playlist bugs me to no end. I did occasionally listen to Jack, and think it is a loss to the Knox market now that it's gone. I have tried to become a fan of 105.3 but just can't seem to listen to them for long periods of time. Like a previous poster said, this is indeed why I pay for Sirius satellite radio.

Amen. Maybe Journal spends too much time paying attention to armchair quarterbacks on a board like this.

knoxville radio fans,
top fiveahead. please try wkcs 91.1 fm. it is run by knoxville county schools and the program director there work at 102.1 when it was U-102. do you remember that station? wkcs is broadcasting from fulton high school and it teaches high school students about radio. wkcs is just like b 97.5 when it first switched from easy listening to soft a.c and combines the a.c. format of the 1980's that U-102 had. please try it out. i think 35 to 54 would like the station alot. that is what i listen to now that 95.7 jack fm is gone. i only listen to b 97.5 when they do flashback weekend and flashback lunch hour or what ever it is called. http://www.wkcs.org i hope all of you that used to listen to 95.7 jack fm or when U 102 was around and remember that station and what it was like will try wkcs 91.1 fm. I CAN NOT STAND 105.3 FM. TO ME THAT STATION IS A BIG JOKE. AAA format will never work in knoxville. forget it.

WKCS is excellent, when you are within range of it's on air signal. It's the best sounding FM signal in the market.

kent t,
that is why i think it needs to be on a stronger signal or different number on the fm dial. one of the fm stations in this area that is not doing so well so loan out their station to WKCS if that is not against the rules of radio and i know nothing about them at all and if they were nice enough to do this. i now have the adapter that i bought at radio shack and another that i have to be bought at best busy - so i could hook up my boombox stereo aux input to my computer. that is what i used the internet for in the evenings. soon i will let you all know that my top 10 radio stations are on the fm dial in the usa. i am a male and 45 years old. i think 25 year old to 50 year old - males and females will like my choices. i have found three so far that i like. i am going to try out WSEV 105.5 for a while and give them a fair chance. remember that WKCS 91.1 fm does have a listen live link on the internet.
