Jack FM no more, it's now 95.7 Power FM

Two stations that I wish would fix their coverage of Knoxville -- 91.1 WKCS and 98.3 WMTY.

91.1 mentions (or did mention) in their history that they were going to increase their power to better cover the entire county. Any idea if or when this could happen? Doubtful now with school budgets, terrestrial radio challenges, etc.

As I've said on this board before, 98.3 really should have increased to a full height class A before the band got so tight -- not sure they could get (or even care to take) that opportunity now. Horne is a joke of an owner (ahem, 105.3 anyone??).

Another station that is *almost* at the right format to fill the adult hits/classic hits format is 105.7 the Hog. I listen to them often, but some days they cross the line too far over into southern classic rock. We already have 103.5 for that. 105.7 should stick with the 60s/70s and a pinch of 80s classic hits -- not southern fried rock.

WMTY-FM in Sweetwater can raise their tower to get to the Full class A height but that won't happen at their current location is on the AM stick.

WKCS is hemmed in by a relatively new FM licensed to Benton, TN @ 91.1 and they are a class C3,
also to the north WZTH licensed to Tusculum, they are also a C3. Like WMTY, WKCS waited too long to try to upgrade. They might be able to raise their tower height but getting more power looks like a long stretch. If they could get someone on the ridge to donate tower space and an STL they could upgrade with little cost to the county.

I too enjoy listening to 105.7 the Hogg, They have a decent signal in the North and West section of Knoxville but going east as I head to work they start to fade but are still listenable. I like the southern fried rock but lately they have moved into the 90's a bit much for me.

radio fans,
that is why i bought the adapters so i could hook up my pc to my stereo. cost some money but i do not care. i can now listen to any fm station or am station i want to now. all i have to do is have my high speed internet and the computer working. i do not like internet radio like the stations on i-tunes. i want to hear djs doing their thing and the heads of the station doing their job to make the station work. that is a 5 day week job just like the djs do. i will let every one know soon what my top 20 favorite radio stations are. i was checking out WSEV 105.3 FM and i like what i hear so far. just please do not play the same 100 to 200 songs over and over again.

The way I see it, it's kind of a mixed blessing that WKCS has such small coverage. If it had a bigger signal, by now it would have either been sold to a religious broadcaster or somehow overly commercialized. The good thing is that as soon as 91.1's signal fades between West Hills and Cedar Bluff, then 98.3's signal becomes listenable.

I really do miss having Jack-FM. I prefer older music and my wife likes newer music. Jack-FM hit the sweet spot right in the middle for us. Now one of us has to suffer (voluntarily of course that will me!)

If WKCS could get their antenna on Sharps Ridge, it would gain them some signal. STL might be an issue but doable.

i may a comment i was going to check out WSEV 105.3 FM. that is a misprint on my part. i have been checking out WSEV 105.5 fm but not long enough to make a comment yet.

Well, as soon as I hear what you think of WSEV, then I'll know if I want to check them out too! So let us know...

But I'm really anxious to hear your top 20. That's going to be cool!! Then I can make my own list and see how it compares. I think it'll probably be pretty similar but maybe in a different order. When you get that all sorted out, make sure you post it right away!!

cool jazz,
local radio - local commericals - fox news and local news. Classic hit mix of 1970's 1980's and 1990's and ac hits of 2000's but only 2 or 3 an hour. that is wsev 105.5 fm. they call themselves mix 105.5 fm and i will say that is what they sound like. what has me going is that they just played beat it by michael jackson. a song that no other station will touch that song right now. just heard a commerical for a local movie theather and they told what was currently playing there. now they are getting ready to start a local high school game. this station will stop me listening to WJXB 97.5 FM very soon. check it out every one and let me know what you think. my top 20 stations are fm stations across the u.s.a. hope that clears things up.

That format was put in by the late Bill Burkett. Bill passed away last fall. He came to town in 1981 when George Mooney bought 102.1 and brought it up to 100kw. The tower at that time was in Sevier County and didn't cover Knoxville as well as it should. Subsequent owners moved 102.1 closer in to Knoxville and lowered the power to something like 20kw.

Bill bounced around to different radio stations and different markets, then he moved back to Sevierville and took 105.5 from country to light rock. The station could have easily made it in a much larger market as long as Bill kept it in the road. It's not sounding as polished these days. I tuned in the other evening and heard religious programming.

tennessee cowboy. WSEV 105.5 FM does this on sunday and sunday only. that is fine with me. thank you alot for letting me know about the past history of WSEV 105.5 FM and i like reading this. it would be nice if this guy was still living cause i bet he could straighten out a fw knoxville radio stations and show them how to run them correctly and still make money at the same. what do you think tennessee cowboy?

I tuned in for the first time in a long time Wednesday evening expecting light rock. Instead it was a lady minister talking for at least an hour. It could have been more. Maybe the owner is Baptist. Those guys are big on Wednesday Jesus-ing.

And, yes, Bill had made the rounds in Knoxville, too. Mostly back in the 80's I believe.
