The newness has definitely worn off, but I do have it as a preset. What I'm concerned about are those lame jingles.
______________

Actually, the coin toss one is okay, because sometimes it actually does land on heads and they play more music. The into-commercial sweeper I hate is the "jack flash". Seems like I hear that one every time I turn it on.

One thing is for sure, they're banking on cume, not TSL.
______________

i still think it was a big mistake giving up the oldies franchise along with a very solid local morning show. if this is all they've got... they'll be flipping it again. tell me they plan on hiring some big time talent.

Jack fm

this is really something, reading these past half-dozen posts. "like, I'm in radio and I've heard a few songs repeat, like so they must be getting stale".

Radio geeks listen very differently than regular LISTENERS. Most of you have probably been glued to JACK and now they must already be stale. Unbelievable.

Why not let them establish a little actual time on-the-air before you judge them.

that's the problem.. it's not about repeats it's about the package which is lacking. it's cute but not built for the long haul... that's what this bvoard is about anyway, we can predict and pretend we know what we're talking about! :)

Re: Jack fm

We all predicted the Wolf disaster, as well.
Looks like Jack will get a 5 share if prior
predictions for station demises holds true.

I've heard very positive comments from alot of
people and very negative. Women especially are
not into it as much as men. Not much in the middle.

I do wonder if they'll be adding a new couple
of 100 songs and pulling others from time to time.

Anyone know? Or care?

I haven't listened to Jack that much, but I've heard several people tell me they like it. I'm glad South Central gave up the oldies format--Cumulus is doing it much better with a wider playlist, and I am sure the air talent is enjoying a little more freedom.

Re: Jack fm

Actually, I've said exactly that a ton of times. Read what I said again:
we have a Jack-like station here already called WMMO. With them already here
and having done great for over a decade, there may not be room for Jack.

OldiesCat, are you in Detroit or Orlando? You say you are in Detroit, but obviously WMMO is in Orlando. Also, let us make predictions of what will happen to Jack and let us say what we want. If you don't like the discussion, don't join in! That simple. Also, you are flip flopping between your opinions. On other boards you say, "you can't predict the demise of a station on the air for only a month". Yes we can! Sometimes you talk about the "reality of jack" and how it will fail and it is this whole corporate thing. I don't understand you OldiesCat. Oh and I am going to make a prediction. OldiesCat will probably rip my head off, but oh well. Here is goes: Jack will fail within a couple of years. There! I made a prediction of the demise of Jack.

Jack fm

a) Motor City but listen to them online a lot because of travel between
Detroit and FL.

b) I actually made this post on the Orlando board in response to a post there.
I do NOT know how it got on this board (not the first time a post has moved
or just diappeared).

c) I don't flip-flop- I'm disgustingly consistent. And I do think it's a silly
exercise to act like we know a station will fail when it's only been on-air
for a few weeks or even months. Many of us prefer to count LISTENER VOTES
(called Arbitron) than the "predictions" of radio people who have obvious
bias and agendas.

Re: Jack fm

Here's my take:

I'm beginning to believe the Jack format is a big fad: It's going to be popular for several years and then die out. Everyone is jumping on the bandwagon. The problem is, it's killing off some really great stations to get the format on the air. WCBS in New York and Majic 104 in Chicago just got the ax this past week. All of this for an unproven format that may or may not pull in the ratings.

I like the format-- for a while. I've listened to the online Jack in Indianapolis (1045jackfm.com) and it's nice, but it can get stale on me. The part that concerns me most is Jack FM is compared to the iPOD all the time. That's nice but what makes it different than an iPOD? Well, it has commercials and a bunch of smart liners. Other than that it doesn't seem that different which is why I don't think it has staying power. If I want music, I listen to CD's or an iPOD. If I want some personality, music and a sense of where I am I listen to radio. Jack's taking that out of it and I don't think that is a road that is good for radio. I also don't think the format will keep it's feet. I could be wrong. It is different and enjoyable-- for a while. But after "a while" different becomes just another thing.

Different is nice, but I don't know that Jack is a good type of different. Time will tell.

What kind of jingles do they use? The Jack station here in Jackson has one that uses the theme to "Taxi" that goes "Jack FM, playing what we want, playing what we want". They also have another with the "I Dream Of Jeannie" theme.

Also, with their sweepers, do they have ones that say "Our name's Jack, who the f*** are you?" and "Jack FM is the only station in town that is sonically enhanced by the new D32 audio processor"?
______________

Re: Jack fm

As someone who cut their teeth at a Beautiful Music station in the late Seventies, the Jack format is a strange deja vu. Music, recorded liners, and spot breaks. It's just like the old days...except no misfiring spot carousels.

I discussed a similar subject with management where I work - the corporate consensus is Jack, etc has a shelf life of two years, max. It's a transitional format.

That tells me this: Jack will live 6-9 months before listener boredom kicks in, I mean, stations quit playing much of this music because it burnt itself out on the listeners years ago. So, sometime within or by the end of a station's first year of "Jack-ing", It'll be gone, in favor of something else, TBD later. I feel when corporate says a two year shelf life, I think they mean nationwide. I feel that in some markets, Jack will burn itself out before one book gets published.

Really, gang, disco lived longer and suffered a slower demise. Just a prediction, mind you.

Comments, gentlemen?

The first of next month Jack in Dallas will be on for a year. Some time in September Jack in Jackson MS will be on a year. Jack in Jackson seems to be doing ok in the monthly ratings.

Our jack seems to be progressing slower than others I've heard. Those jingles probably should have been on the first day. When will their web site finally have something on it?

I don't know if Nashville's jack will have an air staf: some of them do and some don't. The web site for Kansas city's jack says they will have one but they've been on for 8 months. Kansas city's jack does have a staf even if they don't do air shifts because I heard some one doing a remote one day.
