Re: Jack flak? The status quo
I AGREE WITH Oldiescat -- the anti-Jack flack, in other words, negative Jack
demise posters, is wearing thin.
FOR THOSE NAYSAYERS* (*this does not including OC, because he is NOT, I repeat
NOT a naysayer)
NAYSAYER* COMMENT: One poster above, not Oldiescat, mentions that as for the Jack listeners, the Cogan liners and overall cocky Jack presentation is more
of an annoyance and the "playing what we want" attitude is negative to listeners claiming listeners simply don't get it or understand the hype:
TIBBS responds: IN DEFENSE of Howard Cogan and the actual use of the JACK name/trademark/concept:
I will venture that VH stations NOT using Howard Cogan/Jack COULD give up a full point in ratings because of the attitude vs. non-attitude and that Cogan's voice is different enough and snide, sometimes funny and even intriguing compared to Ben, Dave, Max, etc.
To the Naysayers: Where's YOUR creativity? The baby boomers don't want just the wimpy AC crap anymore (fact), they want to feel younger than they are (fact), they are better educated and enjoy life more than the generation before them (fact) AND many programmers have buried their heads in the sand and stuck to the contrieved "rules." Listeners want diversity, educated entertainment, sophisticated advertising and a well put together sound that is fresh and exciting instead of overdone and boring. What listeners don't get is boring, under performing cookie cutter radio.
NAYSAYERS* COMMENT: The future is doomed. Jack will fail.
Tibbs responds: The future is unknown to ALL of us. Look at what is happening today and forget tomorrow for a while. Because Jack is/can kick alot of butts in the short term. I can support this with ratings success stories, just like Oldiescat has previously. I venture to say Jack --- DONE PROPERLY --- and other similarly formatted alternative sounding variety stations will make the grade. Long term? Who knows. Better yet? Who cares, at this point. The #1 job is to be tops in the market today and continue to evolve stations instead of putting them on auto pilot or a death march. (Agreeing with MusicloverII on the death of Jammin' Oldies and Real 80's formats by bad decision making.) Remember people follow a leader and Jacks the #1 game. That'll eventually change and the next savvy sound will get attention. Nothing wrong with that. It's natural progression. Quit playing it so safe, it's costing radio to much.
NAYSAYERS* COMMENT: Well it's failing in NY, so it's just a matter of time
before it fails nationally.
Tibbs response: As to why WCBS is "failing" - when have they attempted
to evolve the music to what the true demo of NYC demands? It's common sense and they are playing to a tiny segment of the population that doesn't really want to hear Huey Lewis and the News -- so take the reigns and pep it up and position it to a younger demographic that will respond (or older, hense more oldies, or whatever) -- that's the beauty of Jack -- listeners still think it's
"no rules radio."
I hope this edited version is clear enough to understand. OC, you're
still buying dinner. And it won't be McDonald's.
