The only thing that offends me about the Jack format is the lack of TALENT!! Obviously Infinity will run the Vegas station jockless just as their recent flip to jack in Los Angeles. Ipods do a better job of being a musicbox as you program exactly what you want. I will admit it is cheap, but boring.

Spoken like a true wounded animal.

It's just amazing...the only folks that get it are the listeners. They don't care about the card readers that most stations pass off as 'talent'.

"No Talent...No Radio"--Mike O'Neil: Major Market Radio Star

"Spoken like a true wounded animal."--Radioworker: Anonymous Board Op

Radiojerker, there can only be two reasons that you stand up for talent-free radio...

You are either work at a station without talent...Or,

You are without talent.

I'll bet both are true....

Either way, the listeners know the truth...They are BUYING satellite radio to get away from YOU. 'Cause when Mike was working, NO ONE even CONSIDERED an attempt at challenging terrestrial radio. Now they do.

What's the difference? YOU.

Jack-jocks

Here's a bit of radio reality: most new start-ups are jockless at first.

Fact is, music stations in this town are doing nothing out of the ordinary.
I do not like talentless radio but as a listener I am very happy for this change.

Being jockless is a by-product of the Jack format. I don't think it's a case of Infinity being cheap. I am as pro live jock as anyone. Still, launching jockless showcases the music and keeps the station pristine and clutter free. This gives listeners a better feel for the music. Switching back and forth between Jack and Star, I actually think Jack's smart ass remarks are more entertaining than a jock on star saying "Coming up it's the Pet Shop Boys and U2".

Still, I'm with you Mike. If Jack stays without air personalities it will be their downfall in the long run. I just think they have a long time before they have to worry about that. They may adjust latter. There are rumors on the LA board that the jack station in SoCal KCBS may add air talent by latter this summer.

Does anyone remember KMMK? Where the "mm" stands for music marathon....Jack sort of takes that one step farther. KMMK used to say, "we respect the music as much as you do, that's why we don't talk over it...." Now they don't talk at all, at least with a living voice. I think the format lasted about two years, might have made it longer had the Tobin's not bought 103.5 and turned it to "the edge." I was there at the change into KMMK, sounded good on paper, but we all knew deep down it wouldn't work.

Many say listeners don't even notice the jock, but I will tell you from experience, the Jock with personality, and some talent is still noticed. Listeners don't notice jocks when there is nothing to notice, like just reading a liner....it is just one big charge off, pay a talent and make more, or pay a liner reader less and make a little less.....business in broadcasting, the safe investment, no talent, low pay, is safe.

You know...I keep hearing this "Former Full-Timer" jazz....What does that mean? Only full-time jocks need apply their decades of full time major market, multi-format winning experience to this discussion?

Fine...Where are they? Oh wait...Who's working full-time now On-Air in Las Vegas radio that has major market winning drive time experience in more than one format?

One that I know of....Craig Powers. Wait, he's not on the air now. He's only a former Air-Talent/Program Director of the biggest CHR station in radio history...but under the terms necessary to post here that I keep hearing about, as of now, he's another one of those "has beens" who's disqualified from speaking out too, right?

Mike O'Neil is retired from radio, and a millionaire Los Angeles voice artist.

So, "voice guys" have no place here either, right?

I agree completely...But if I know Craig like I think I do, we'll be hearing from the talented On-Air staff of the former LITE 100 again soon enough....

I absolutely agree with Jon on this one! Him and Mike have as much right to post here as anyone. It's supposed to be a free country. I may or may not agree with him or Mike or anyone else for that matter.
The childless negativity just doesnt need to be. We're all adults here. No need to attack someone just because they have a different opinion. Why not explain why you think they are right or wrong that's all.
Why not quit fighting and try to save radio if at all possible? It's a scary time to be in radio with satellite crawling up it's ass, and the revenue is shrinking...especially for Infinity who will lose more than $100 million without Howard.
I am looking forward to Howard's show on satellite. As far as Jack goes...theres no "human" touch. Can't meet the guy on the radio, talk to him...nothing....I remember when radio used to be our friend....Not anymore...It's gotten so cold.
Whether you love or hate someone or in between, at least a jock on the air gives you that option. With Jack, I'll just listen to my CD's.
When you have many music formats in a market, and if the music is the same, the only thing that will stand out is PERSONALITY...unlike music, it just can't be duplicated.

But it will be broadcast Radio's mistake

Re: Jack-jocks

And yet more reality....Many Jacksss are still talentless

Craig never programmed KIIS or any Los Angeles radio station. He worked there one night a week on the weekend. While I played at Infinity many seemed to be under the same impression. I kept my mouth shut so as not to embarrass him. Don't know who padded the resume (whoops - blew it)He did not have the goods to make it in L.A. so he ended up in Orange County radio (small market) where he was a jock and P.D.
The P.D. who hired Craig for that one shift was Mike Wagner who along with Paul Freeman were running a broadcast school on the side. To give the school some validity Mike put Craig on that one shift. It didn't last long.

It's funny. Sure corporate radio is doing something different and hopefully they're following the formula of Jack by cutting out the clutter. I just think that with all the energy expended on this board about how horrible are the corporate monoliths...why not take that combined energy, start a station and show everyone how to do it the right way? Put your money where your mouth is. I would be very interested to see how things pan out.

"...Spoken like a true wounded animal."

Okay Radioworker...Let's get down to cases.

Tell us about YOUR work in the enlightened "radio"
of HERE AND NOW....What have YOU contributed? Anything?

Tell us about YOUR last book...the one YOU were fully
responsible for as an On-Air Talent. Do you have even one to
point at?

Not an On-Air Talent? Fine...tell us about YOUR programming
experience. What was the last book YOUR station put up?
What's the prime demo? The Format?

How many On-Air Talents worked for YOU? Name any jock YOU
employed that went to a larger market....please.

Answer the questions...Answer just one.

Or...is YOUR only contribution to radio this weak, witless
tripe YOU use to justify the lousy radio YOU do?

The fact is, radio is being abandoned by the public...So go ahead, share the brilliance that the "has beens" have been replaced with.
