JANUARY PPM's - DISCUSS

In the North Shore they must have gone to WBOQ.
They play some, but not much '50s. Last night I heard "Lonley Teardrops" by Jackie Wilson

and WRKO is in free fall. Just barely ahead of WPLM ( which only gets ratings because of their awesome mid day hostess :) IMHO)

I'm happy PLM is up, not happy that WFNQ Nashua is continuing to fall.

One feature of the January PPMs: the first appearance of WWZN in a long time (if ever, since the dawn of PPM technology). And the outlet is way down there with some out-of-state FMs. Some will immediately pounce and say it's the lib-rull programming, and to a certain extent that may be true. But Jeff Santos's show is absolutely unlisteneable, and if a station's morning drive drives people away, it's tough to get them back the rest of the day. So WWZN has a classic dilemma (no not just a perplexing or difficult problem, but a situation requiring choices between equally undesirable alternatives): the source of WWZN's funding is also a drag on its popularity. Santos is so much in love with the sound of his voice, it's a miracle that at least one sponsor replaced his voiced tracked spot with one read by a professional. Another negative feature about WWZN: they run some of the worst promos and PSAs in radio history, and usually at the very same time of day. On another note: WWZN is also heavily invested in sports play-by-play, and insists on running hockey and basketball coverage promos, often with a SCREAMING announcer describing a scoring play. In baseball, football, and hockey, scoring is so rare that it doesn't make sense to do this type of thing. If you have to have sports promos (which is doubful on a general-interest station; fans of the sport or team are a distinct minority on a non-sports station anyway), just have someone read a text that days THIS is the station for (here insert team and/or sport) and the date and time of the next game.

For any station from Worcester, Providence, Nashua, elsewhere to get a 1 in Boston, that's pretty good. They should be happy with that. When stations like WZID and WXLO are beating WFNX, when is it time to try something else?

Does WWZN run "Kars For Kids"?

I believe they did in the past, but not lately. But they DO run "Don't throw Mercury in the trash" spots.

Time to go back to being "Oldies 103.3." They're adrift.

80's????? 70's????? 60's?????

Possibly. But it isn't CBS's thing to use "oldies" on Classic Hits stations - Clear Channel seems to be the only one doing that (Seattle & Milwaukee) recently.

I wonder why they are using 60's, 70's & 80's in the refreshed logo and positioning, given WROR's use of it since launching on 105.7. Sticking with "Bostons Greatest Hits" seemed to be a better fit, and way to stand apart from WROR. Guess in PPM, branding confusion isn't an issue like in diary markets.

Country 102.5 is #3! Just a tiny bit behind WBZ (AM) in AQH, and yes ODS really did slide. Don't know what kind of music or identity adjustments they could make to rebound.

Pete Sheppard, we have a job for you :)

Please, I'll take the creepy duo singing the "Kars For Kids" jingle over Flo from Progressive any day.

Kool 101 in New London, CT, too... specifically, "Good Times, Great Oldies." ;)

Well, bringing back the reverb (full time, not just for a mic/show effect) and a good, strong dose of old fashioned AM-type compression (Sunday night's "American Top-40" sounds pretty good, compression-wise) would be a good start! :-\

I listened to Kool this past weekend...DJ...is it station policy to give the jocks Valium before an airshift? Nobody had any energy the times I tuned in.

Back to the topic - more than light reverb and compression are "oldies" staples, so don't expect the airchain to be tweaked in that direction on ODS given that KOOL, WOGL, & WCBS-FM don't have it. ODS wants female office listeners, and studies show that women don't like heavy processing for long periods of listening.

Does better and better. There was a time one wouldn't have expected country to be a big hit in Boston and New England but it resonates with certain demos (mainly mostly female but some guys too, and sometimes the pop/crossover stuff can attract rock-pop fans). There's an artist--Kenny
Chesney, I think--who has at least once sold out Gillette Stadium in record time and there's
some kind of attendance record. In fact he did it again:

http://kmps.radio.com/2011/01/28/kenny-chesney-zac-brown-band-add-new-tour-date/

>>Kenny Chesney and the Zac Brown Band booked the Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, MA for a concert on Chesney’s Goin’ Coastal tour. After the date sold out, Kenny decided to add another date – and when he did, people went wild. Within minutes of ticket availability, there were none to be found. That’s right, Kenny sold out more than 68,000 seats in 8 minutes.

So there's a bit of country popularity up here after all.

I usually listen during the week, though I have sampled them on occasion on the weekend, and with all due respect, you are right, for some reason, their deliveries pale in comparison to the jocks on the air during the week. Maybe they want to tone things down on the weekends, I don't know...

Looks like 98.5 took a major hit.
Ouch first round playoff exit for the Pats.

Yipes! That is a big drop for The Sports Hub. I am also thinking it is due to the Pats early exit.
I guess next months PPM numbers will tell the real story.
