Atlanta PPM Jan. 2013

Putting together my monthly roundup. Cox does really well, as always.

B stays high, doesn't lose much post-Christmas, All News still heading upward and receiving a cume in the upper 300,000s.

Q and Star tied with Power the current Women 25-54 loser, Fish loses almost a share and a half.

Big victory for Q100 over Power! Just continues to prove the point that Hot AC-leaning CHR does better in Atlanta than Rhythmic-leaning CHR, and that Jan Jeffries isn't crazy

Power is now losing to q100, Star, Fish/104.7 and B98.5 in the Women 25-54 and is not in the top 10.

I assume people have stopped sampling it...but still light years ahead of Project's ratings.

^Yeah, it was still definitely a good move for Clear Channel...

For years, now, though, posters on this board have claimed that the only reason Q100 had the ratings it did is because it was the "only game in town," and that any rhythmic or dance-oriented CHR would blow it out of the water

Clearly, that's not true, and Jan Jeffries knew exactly what he was doing all along, at least in this market

I tend to agree. . .Star 94 also does well in this town, and has regained lost ground, hinting the two lighter versions of Top 40 do better than the harder, more rhythmic version of Top 40.

Good hearing from you, Jan. Hope all is well.

Someone sent me a list that goes further, and WGST had a zero share.
Is CC still subscribing that station?

Allaccess.com had 97.9 1.0/0.6/0.7 6+ and 98.9 0.4/0.3/0.4 6+.  Not knowing what they were doing in-demo, but I thought Bone was doing better than that.  But seeing what others have, they might have had them backwards (wouldn't be the first time).

It is, thanks - I'm celebrating right now with my wife and kids - just don't tell anyone that it's me, okay? It'll be our little secret

I expect you and your slew of CBS posters must be pretty upset that every single one of your rhythmic-leaning CHRs is down again this month ;)

I think the bigger thing hurting Power, and I said this would hurt Power when they first came on, is not having a local local talent during drive time, particularly a good local morning show.

A sales/marketing friend that now works at Clear Channel told me that they were looking for one. That was back in November...now I have no clue.

I totally agree and am surprised they've been able to do this well without one.

It is entirely too early to be crowning Q100 the victor in Atlanta's CHR war.

Q100 has a few enormous advantages: an absolute behemoth of a (local) morning show, a 10+ year head-start as the mainstream CHR brand in Atlanta, and more upper-end appeal with its music. However, Power has clearly generated interest amongst the CHR audience, and deservedly so. We're talking about a couple of monthlies here; and remember that Q likely suffered in the last two books due to the Christmas rush to Fish, and perhaps B. This battle is FAR from over for either party.

All of that said, if the playlists were reversed (i.e., Q100 had long been a musically aggressive CHR and Power launched with Q100's current playlist), I don't believe Power would have made the same inroads against the incumbent. I also think Power may have teetered a little too close to the dance edge since around New Year's. Power has undoubtedly been tweaking its playlist in recent weeks, experimenting with pop/rock golds from the likes of Fall Out Boy, Adele and the All-American Rejects, and also loosening then re-tightening the spins on its power rotations. I suspect the fine-tuning will continue as the station continues gaining its footing and more PPM reports provide their various insights.

We might see more share for Power if (when) Wild ever flips.
