Jeff Federman gone......

Since Roy will be in charge, I smell at least one CBS station changing format by the end of the year. Maybe two?

I totally agree. And with the reports saying that Roy will start after Labor Day weekend, I wouldn't be surprised if something doesn't go down then.

It's been my opinion all along that CBS should do a hybrid of B96 Pop/Hip Hop and B96 Dance HD2 in Chicago on 97.1 here in LA.

http://www.b96dance.com/blog/

They should call it B97 LA's Station For Hip Hop & Dance! I know we all have them, but that is just my opinion.

CBS is desperately looking for someone with magic. Jeff certainly didn't have any. I guess corporate weaseldom only gets you so far. Let's see what Roy has. They'll have to learn to deal with his weirdness and his many conflicts of interest. Maybe Roy is getting out of KDAY just in time. When they split the 93.5 stations that have been synchrocasting for the last 5 years on 8/18, they will go back to jamming each other, like in the bad old days. Let's also see who else will be leaving 5670 Wilshire with ther stuff in a box...

I'm new to the board, so forgive me if my questions sound ill informed...

How does replacing one guy with another guy cut costs?

I thought Jeff was more of a sales/marketing/business guy, and I thought his stations were doing well overall? What does it mean that Jeff didn't have any magic? And what weaseldom?

I'm just curious, is it clear that Federman was fired rather than he opted to resign? Is it possible he was doing well, he gave CBS Radio an ultimatum that he wanted a raise or else he would walk, CBS wouldn't give it to him, thus the personnel change? I'm just not sure why it's so clear to everyone that CBS fired him.

LOL, it's never clear with anyone whether they resigned or was "asked" to resign. Mostly what I do is note whether they left that day with their stuff in a box or whether they reported to work for two more weeks and had a going away party. (something I've rarely seen in radio!)
:D

Re: "Is it possible he was doing well..."? The answer is no. Not possible. Your hypothesis also suggests that the person who replaced him would only have been hired had Jeff not given an ultimatum. That too is an unlikely scenario.

Your first few sentences seem to say Federman was fired because he was doing a bad job. What do you believe were the specific responsibilities that Federman had and didn't do well at?

Your last two sentences imply (at least to some degree) that Federman was fired because CBS wanted to hire Roy. Was Federman fired mostly because of poor performance? Or was Federman fired because CBS wants Roy in the position (perhaps to implement some major changes in L.A.)?

And I know everyone seems to be looking at format changes (perhaps at KLXS), but is Roy going to take over Federman's position of General Manager at KROQ and JACK? If so, what types of changes (if any) do you believe can be expected at those stations (even if they aren't evident to listeners)?

Roy appears to have been given overall responsibility for managing the cluster...so the changes could be anything from the senior management team to format flips to more substantial station cross pollination and promotion to creation of new events to more emphasis on website development and revenue generation. Just to name a few. I think it's a safe bet that there will be change(s).

Now we know.....It's Roy's show now. This should be fun. Roy knows where all the bodies are buried over at Clear Channel.......

Yes he does, didn't he bury them to begin with?

Now that my deal is finally over with CBS, I can explain, for my own piece of mind why I left CBS last August (2008). I called a meeting with CBS Radio Corp in NY July of 2008. Yes, I called the meeting and flew to NY. I was not feeling good about how we were running the market and how some of the key decisions had been taken out of my hands (like pricing and DOS selection). Not saying they were wrong decisions, but just decisions I didn't believe in at the time (nor do now). When I left my NY meeting, I knew it would be a month or two before I was asked to leave. Simply put, a difference in philosophy. Neither right or wrong on anyones part just a difference of opinion on how to run the market. I graciously excepted the offer to consult for a year with no hard feelings at all. I was VERY proud of my tenure at CBS pre and post Stern. JACK FM launch, KNX back to the news leader, biggest billing cluster in the country, KROQ biggest billing station in the world two years in a row, great talent, always 3 of the top 6 stations in the market both revenue and ratings, etc. etc..

So "no magic?" Not sure that really describes what I and most radio executives would call an amazing run and one that has not yet been duplicated in any form by the current structure in LA (although Ed is a great guy and will rally the troops). While this post is coming very, very late (over a year), I just wanted to set the record straight now that I can.

Thanks
Jeff Federman

Didn't the NY people decide that KLSX should die?

Ultimately CBS has to look in the mirror and question themselves on what they did to facilitate their own demise in a market as critical as Los Angeles. Jeff, Roy Laughlin, Dan Weiner and now Ed Krampf. That is 4 Market Managers in less than a year. Nothing has worked....successfully... to replicate the succcess the CBS station group experienced from 2005 til Federman's departure from a ratings and a revenue standpoint. Check the rankers on both-- it is conclusive and reveals that whomever is instituting these dicates in NY to the local market managers should be accountable....not the local market managers

The more things change, the more they stay the same. For some reason, no matter who is the ultimate owner of CBS, New York always dictates to the other markets and it’s usually a stupid decision. One only needs to look at KNX-FM’s history. When they flipped to KKHR it was some bozo in New York that had them making so many changes in the short time they were on the air that KKHR could never compete. Of course one could argue that no one could have taken on KIIS and done any real damage back then.
But KKHR tried and actually did a good job considering someone from NY was always meddling and they had no budget.

Then there was KODJ/CBS-FM. Another clown from New York had them playing Doo Wop and other east coast hits instead of playing the songs that Angelino’s grew up on. So even with a staff that boasted The Real Don Steele, Charlie Tuna and MG Kelly they were still dominated by KRTH.

However this pales in comparison to the way that Clear Channel dictates to their station’s programming departments… Radio, the bad decisions just keep on comin’…

If I were Ed Krampf, I wouldn't unpack all the boxes.

The track record of the suits in New York keeping Market Managers in Los Angeles would be a joke if it were not so sad. One year. Four careers? Four lives? Who will take the blame when KFWB tanks? Bet it will not be those in New York who decided Dr. Laura and the umpteenth right-wing talk station in Los Angeles will be a winner.

And how will they dictate a "fix" for KROQ's ratings issues. KRTH and AMP are bright spots, but it looks like New York might be keeping their noses out of programming there.

For Krampf, I hear there is a news director gig open in Bakersfield. Has he ever been on the air or done news? From the looks of things, the answer would be "no."
