Jeopardy & Wheel Of Fortune

In my neck of the woods, Jeopardy and Wheel Of Fortune have been on the same TV station for years (maybe since the beginning)! During Wheel's commercial breaks (usually towards the end), there have been Jeopardy promos. Is there a rule or contract that only one station carry both programs? Or are there areas where the aforementioned programs air different stations?

It varies. I can recall when, in New York City, about twenty years ago or so, "Wheel" aired on WCBS/2 and 7:30 PM, with "Jeopardy" on WABC/7 at 7 PM. Of course, these days, WABC airs both - much like most ABC O&O's, now that I think about it... Meanwhile, "Jeopardy" really gets the shaft in most Midwestern markets; whereas "Wheel" airs at 6:30 PM local time, right before primetime, "Jeopardy" runs anywhere from early afternoon to late morning to late night!

Not that anyone looks forward to the retirement of Pat Sajak, but if, say, a Wayne Brady replaces him, while Alex Trebek is still doing his thing, I would like to know the number of affiliates of both shows that will suddenly "flip flop" their timeslots.

Wheel of Fortune airs at 6:30 PM nightly on WKRN, channel 2, in Nashville whereas Jeopardy airs on MyTV 30 at 6:00 PM nightly. WKRN has been airing WOF every evening for as long a I have lived in Nashville (moved here in 1986) and I don't know that Jeopardy has ever aired on channel 2.

As I recall, WWNY/7 in Watertown, NY aired Jeopardy! at 7 PM and Wheel following. I might be thinking of another station in the area.

It was not long ago Wheel and Jeopardy! were seen on different channels in most of Canada. Jeopardy! aired at 7:30 on virtually all CTV stations, while the station Wheel aired on varied from market to market. In Ontario it was on the NewNet stations (later A-Channel) where available, or simply only available from a U.S. station on cable. Some areas including Manitoba had it on the CTV station. Nowadays both air in their normal timeslots nationally on CBC, excluding CBET Windsor where WDIV has the rights for Detroit.

King World always liked to sell them as a combo but in Dayton OH Wheel airs at 7 on WHIO, Jeopardy is at 7:30 on WDTN. WHIO has carried Entertainment Tonight at 7:30 since the 70s

In the San Francisco Bay Area, they have always run together, Jeopardy at 7:00 and Wheel at 7:30. They were together on KRON (then NBC) for years until the early 90s when KRON tried a failed "early-prime" experiment, with NBC programming starting at 7:00. To avoid moving the two shows to an earlier time slot, King World yanked them from KRON, and moved them to KGO-TV (ABC) where they remain to this day.

They ran for years in Boston on WSBK-TV formerly analog 38 now dtv 39. Then WSBK was bought by CBS which already owned WBZ-TV formerly analog channel 4 now dtv 30. Then, almost without warning, WBZ picked up Wheel and Jeopardy in that order stahting (that's the way we say it here) at 7:00 pm. According to post on radio-info.com, the ratings improved considerably and helped WBZ's prime-time lineup of CBS shows.

Jeopardy and Wheel in HD was a nice enhancement to both shows. I suppose moreso than Entertainment Tonight and The Insider going HD for those shows. I could see the benefit of WBZ deciding to displace the talk for the game shows, even though they didn't do it right away.

In Philly, season 1 of Jeopardy ran separately from Wheel--wheel on WPVI at 7:30 (replacing a second run of Joker's Wild), and Jeopardy at 12:30 p.m. on KYW. In season 2, Jeopardy moved over to WPVI at 7 (replacing Tic Tac Dough), and there they're been since.

Before WSBK had the rights to both shows, they ran on WHDH formerly channel 7 now DTV 42 for many, many years. For a period of time in the mid 80s, they had Jeopardy at 4:00 and Wheel at 5:30, and then in the fall of 1987, they moved to Wheel at 7:00 and Jeopardy at 7:30, with Lottery Live immediately following Jeopardy.

The two have aired seemingly forever here in Hartford/New Haven by WTNH-TV (ABC) channel 8 [digital 10] of New Haven, possibly since the two were in tandem since the mid-80s.

In Chicago, both Jeopardy & Wheel of Fortune went on the air in 1984 (when the syndicated versions came on), and always been on WLS-TV the entire time. Jeopardy has always been on at 3:30pm CT & Wheel of Fortune at 6:30pm CT. I don't remember either show being on at any other time since it's debut.

Now I had to mention syndicated because back in 1984, NBC owned the daytime rights to Wheel of Fortune, and that always changed timeslots, but aired between 9am & 11am on WMAQ-TV.

What is....you're wrong?

I was born in Lebanon, TN in 1983 and I have a very good memory (plus I did some research)

When Wheel was a NBC daytime/pre-prime show (1975-1989 and then again in 1991 after Bob Goen ruined it on CBS) Jeopardy ran on WSMV 4 in pre-prime at 6:30 pm. After 1991, both Wheel and Jeopardy moved to WUXP 30 (UPN) until the late 90's, with Wheel at 6:00 and Jeopardy at 6:30 or vice versa in some years. In about 1998 or 1999, Wheel then moved to its current location and Jeopardy moved to 6:00 pm.

Ever since, Jeopardy has become the longest running program in the history of Channel 30 (by default: most of the programming on 30 was infomercials for a while before all those court shows took over)

Much like Pat Sajak ruined the late-night talk show format on CBS. ;D
Had his late night talk show succeeded, the syndicated version of Wheel of Fortune probably would have been cancelled as well. He started that show when his network contract ended, but was still under contract for the syndicated version. He had planned to leave the syndicated version as well. His talk show was cancelled before he could leave the syndicated version. So he's still there today.

As for the network version, Rolf Benirschke was a complete disaster as a replacement on the network version of Wheel of Fortune. NBC cancelled the show after that. CBS picked it up and brought Bob Goen. He did ok, but the show didn't do well and cancelled on CBS after a year. Returned to NBC after that with Bob Goen, and cancelled for the final time.

In the 1st season of J!, the show aired at 4 PM, WoF has been at 7 PM from the start. J! around 1985-86 moved to 4:30 PM prior to NewsCenter 4 at 5 PM. ET aired at 7:30 PM from 1981-1988. Then in the fall of '88 ET moved to KGO-TV and KRON aired a J! repeat from the previous season at 4:30 PM with the current episode at 7:30 PM. In February 1992 when KRON's early prime experiment occured, KGO picked up the pair to where it is today. Coincidentally ET moved back to KRON with Hard Copy at 6:30 PM and then moved to it's current 7:30 PM slot that it occupies today.

In the state capitol. KXTV 10 (Then CBS, now ABC) has always carried the J! and WoF Pair but WoF aired at 7 PM and then J! at 7:30 PM right up until 1995 when it became ABC. In September of '95 KXTV reverted J! and WoF to air at 7-8 PM right up until fall 2004 when KXTV picked up The Insider (and curently Inside Edition) and moved J! and WoF 1/2 hr back to 6:30-7:30 PM to where it is today. But I think that soon enough KCRA should pick up J! and WoF since it's sister station KSBW carries the two shows. Maybe it's not good enough for the station the branded themselves and started the slogan "Where The News Comes First"

In Seattle The KIRO aired J! At 9 AM the 1st Year then Moved to KOMO
And KOMO Aired Wheel and Still Does At 7 PM And Jeopardy At 7:30

The first year of syndicated "Wheel" (1983-84) WCPX (WKMG)/6
Orlando aired it at 7:30. It got first crack at "Jeopardy!" but the
station wouldn't air it at 7; "PM Magazine" was winning the timeslot.
King World suggested late afternoon; no dice--Ch. 6 was running
"Laverne & Shirley" at 4, "Three's Company" at 4:30, "M*A*S*H"
at 5, and local news at 5:30, and doing quite well. So how about
the mornings? Donahue at 9, "Hour Magazine" at 10, "Price Is Right"
at 11. So King World decided to take "Wheel" away from 6 and found
a ready buyer at ABC affiliate WFTV/9, which has carried "Jeopardy!"
at 7 and "Wheel" at 7:30 since 1984. Ch. 6 is still looking for something
to compete; right now it's the CBS Evening News at 7 and "Inside Edition"
at 7:30.

"Wheel" and "Jeopardy!" aired for years on WTSP/10 Tampa/St. Petersburg
at 7 and 7:30, respectively, but a couple of years ago Ch. 10 replaced them
with Dr. Phil; the game shows are now on WFTS/28.

WTSP's sister station WXIA/11 Alive started a 7 PM newscast a few years ago,
moved "Wheel" from 7 to 7:30, and downgraded "Jeopardy!" to late afternoon.
For the last couple of years the game shows have been on WATL/36, which
has a duopoly with WXIA, from 7-8. 11 Alive currently airs "Extra!" at 7:30.

I know of a couple of Fox affiliates which air the two games: WALA/10 Mobile, AL
has had them forever; WVUE/8 New Orleans got them away from CBS affiliate
WWL/4.

One of the biggest changes was in Dallas, where they moved from WFAA/8 to
KTVT/11. "Jeopardy!" even airs at its old NBC time of 11 AM (CT), making Dallas
one of the few markets in the Central time zone to air "Young And The Restless"
at 11:30.

Birmingham is another city where the two shows air on separate stations.
CBS affiliate WIAT/42 airs two episodes of "Jeopardy!" (one new, one a rerun)
in the 4-5 PM (CT) slot, leading into the 5 PM news; ABC33/40 (WCFT/WJSU)
airs "Wheel" at 6:30.

Two other markets in which J! and WoF air in seperate stations is Omaha, J! is on at 4:30 PM on WOWT Channel 6 NBC while WoF is at 6:30 PM on KETV Channel 7 ABC.

In Oklahoma City, KFOR-TV (NBC) carries Jeopady! at 3:30/4 PM owith 3:30 PM the repeat and 4 PM the new episode and WoF airs at 6:30 PM on KOCO 5 A(BC).

I love watching Jeopardy at 7pm on Baltimore's Ch 2 and then at 7:30 on Harrisburg's Ch 21.

I am MUCH better with the answers when I watch at 7:30...... ;)
