The first year of syndicated "Wheel" (1983-84) WCPX (WKMG)/6
Orlando aired it at 7:30. It got first crack at "Jeopardy!" but the
station wouldn't air it at 7; "PM Magazine" was winning the timeslot.
King World suggested late afternoon; no dice--Ch. 6 was running
"Laverne & Shirley" at 4, "Three's Company" at 4:30, "M*A*S*H"
at 5, and local news at 5:30, and doing quite well. So how about
the mornings? Donahue at 9, "Hour Magazine" at 10, "Price Is Right"
at 11. So King World decided to take "Wheel" away from 6 and found
a ready buyer at ABC affiliate WFTV/9, which has carried "Jeopardy!"
at 7 and "Wheel" at 7:30 since 1984. Ch. 6 is still looking for something
to compete; right now it's the CBS Evening News at 7 and "Inside Edition"
at 7:30.
"Wheel" and "Jeopardy!" aired for years on WTSP/10 Tampa/St. Petersburg
at 7 and 7:30, respectively, but a couple of years ago Ch. 10 replaced them
with Dr. Phil; the game shows are now on WFTS/28.
WTSP's sister station WXIA/11 Alive started a 7 PM newscast a few years ago,
moved "Wheel" from 7 to 7:30, and downgraded "Jeopardy!" to late afternoon.
For the last couple of years the game shows have been on WATL/36, which
has a duopoly with WXIA, from 7-8. 11 Alive currently airs "Extra!" at 7:30.
I know of a couple of Fox affiliates which air the two games: WALA/10 Mobile, AL
has had them forever; WVUE/8 New Orleans got them away from CBS affiliate
WWL/4.
One of the biggest changes was in Dallas, where they moved from WFAA/8 to
KTVT/11. "Jeopardy!" even airs at its old NBC time of 11 AM (CT), making Dallas
one of the few markets in the Central time zone to air "Young And The Restless"
at 11:30.
Birmingham is another city where the two shows air on separate stations.
CBS affiliate WIAT/42 airs two episodes of "Jeopardy!" (one new, one a rerun)
in the 4-5 PM (CT) slot, leading into the 5 PM news; ABC33/40 (WCFT/WJSU)
airs "Wheel" at 6:30.
