You know, I was thinking about this. Yeah, I was upset that Jericho was cancelled, and I want it to come back so I can see what happens next.
But was it a good show? If I were Les Moonves do the correct thing?
Perhaps. Here's why:
At first, the premise was interesting, and the concept heavily promoted, almost from the begining of the summer. Something terrible happens, and it is implied that World War III has taken place.
Under that premise, you'd thihk this would be like 'Lost." Lots of action, and a many mysteries. What we eventually got was something not quite the same. Instead, action was dropped here and there, like carrots in front of a rabbit. Each episode, I felt like I'd get a taste, but not enough to be satisfied, and I felt like I was waiting until the end of the show, only to be let down with cliff hanger after cliff hanger. In between were long drawn out sappy soap scenes, that usually brought the show to a stop, and usually had nothing to do with the big picture. This show didn't know what it wanted to be: A night time serial? An action adventure? It seemed like everyone was trying to appeal to everyone... Can't do that on TV and be successful.
But then there was the issue of who the stars were. Who's the leading man? It always seemed like Gerald McRaney had the most interesting character, (aside from the mysterious Mr. Hawkins). Here's a guy who should have been the pulse of the show: A veteran actor playing a former Marine turned small town Mayor. Instead, what did they do? McRaney gets less and less air time each episode, until the last episdoe, where they kill him off. Huh? Ok, imagine you are Les Moonves and the producers come to you and say "yeah, for the last episode of the season we're... we're gonna kill off Gerry. Oh, and uh... Yeah we are gonig to move away from the "whodunnit" to moving forward." Think about it, you'd cancel that dawg in heartbeat!
The truth is, as I was watching that show, it became clear to me that the writers had not planned this out ahead of time, and didn't really know where they were going. This was a sign of a very inexperienced team. Lets face it, it was not a very good show.
That said, they should at least lets u finish the story.
