Jhani Kaye To KTWV!

Just received an email from Don Barrett.

Jhani will now program KTWV and KRTH. I sense a format change of sorts in the works.

Ed Krampf denies that. But we all know what management's word is worth.

Lies aside, it's about time, isn't it? The Wave has been pitiful for a while now.

"I am here to help KTWV continue to build on the Smooth AC heritage and evolve it further."

Hmmm. Sure sounds like a well-crafted short-and-sweet statement that means, "Yeah, look out KOST." Don't see a mention of "Jazz" (Smooth or not) in that statement.

Looks like "Sunday Jazz on the WAVE" and a mainstream A/C.

It ain't goin' AAA, Hot A/C or Classic Oldies -- but imho, the crosshairs are set on KOST.

The return of Mark & Kim, maybe?

Of course the target is KOST. He wanted to beat them with KRTH and he has 6+ and 12+ and now he has the chance at the KOST target demos like Women 24-54. Plus KOST is somewhat vulnerable thanks to CC's handcuffing of their PD and forcing her to use sub-standard jingles and a skeleton staff both on air and behind the scenes. The people that KOST has are good, very good, many are people Kaye put there, but they don't have the budget that they used to have and they also have an obstacle in the building that will make doing the right thing very difficult. Stella Prado learned how to program from Jhani Kaye and has been very successful, so don't count her out. It's the corporate factor that's been hurting KOST and this won't help.

Mark & Kim? Doubtful. Unless she really wants back into the daily grind and Mark's contract is up. But I wouldn't rule out others that used to work at KOST and there are quite a few.

That's sure my conclusion, too.

Here's what www.laradio.com says, in part....

In other CBS/LA radio news, Jhani Kaye takes over the programming reins at KTWV, “The WAVE.” The Smooth Jazz format has been struggling all over the country but Jhani’s new assignment will not only address the declining format in the key demos with a new mix of music, but a contemporary approach to the format.

Demos... new mix... contemporary approach. Gee, doesn't that sound like a soft flip to soft AC?

So what I'm reading here is that the Wave has hit the proverbial beach?

When do you expect we will start seeing changes?

Well, the immediate change was the elimination of all "Smooth Jazz" references on air and on the website.

now identified on air as "ninety four seven...southern california's wave"

Very predictable as many here have already noted. Jhani moves fast when he takes over.

Of course he'll do his number on the format, which is necessary if it is to survive in any incarnation, but this format has been tweaked, adjusted, updated, smoothed over and soul-infused so many times since its inception, it actually makes me (somewhat) long for the actual original incarnation. While it was much more airy and sleepy then, at least it was different and actually gave some exposure to artists who previous to that time didn't have any. Over the years I have only listened occaisionally, but the station really lost me when they started playing Gladys Knight and Pipps more often than KRTH.

I see some questionable songs looking at what KTWV has recently played, but these seemed to be attention-grabbers:

Timbaland/OneRepublic - Apologize
Michael Jackson?
Peter Gabriel - In Your Eyes
Police - Every Breath You Take
Emotions - Best Of My Love
Fugees - Killing Me Softly
John Mayer - Waiting on the World
Kool and the Gang - Ladies Night
Rufus/Chaka - Ain't Nobody
Commodores - Lady

I bet they will be fully AC-morphed by year's end..

With those songs, it sounds like they are AC already. Has anyone been paying attention to how the playlist is split between AC and Smooth AC?

This is not a "new" idea...The elimination of "Smooth Jazz" and a heavier dose of vocals.

It's being done already at KJZY in Sebastapol/Santa Rosa! Granted, it's not really a ratings star, because the demographic make-up of that area is not ideal for that kind of sound....Lots of blue-collar, classic rock type listeners up there! (Too bad, because it's a great sounding station)

However, in L.A., this could work very well and I think it will ! By eliminating the "Smooth Jazz" moniker, you get yourself out of a format/music "box" and open yourself up to AC (old and new), Smooth R&B (old and new) and even some Country artists, if you're feeling bold!! (and Kaye is bold)

A less sleepy, much hipper AC-Hybrid to come at KOST. KOST has been "Kosting" for a long time, if you will?.......And now The Wave is going to give them a run for their money.....Brilliant!! Kind of what AMP is doing to KIIS !!

My prediction....Watch The Wave see a resurgence in L.A. and watch other stations in the country (KIFM, KYOT, etc), follow suit and/or even flip to this format!

CBS is on a roll !!
