Jhani Kaye To KTWV!

Hmm, I just heard I Am by Mary J. Blige on the stream. If I'm putting format labels on songs, I would say that particular song is more urban/ac than mainstream ac or hot/ac. As an ex-smooth jazz air talent, current oldies urban assistant PD/air talent, and casual Wave listener, I must admit that I'm really curious to see where Jhani is going with this station.

He is going straight through and over the 'Coast' to hit up some 'Waves'!!!

I don't really believe that he can beat KOST with just KTWV, at least not as long as he still plays smooth jazz. However, were he to flip the Wave to soft AC and go straight after Coast he'd have more than a fair chance to do it. KOST just doesn't sound like KOST much anymore. Outside of the jocks it's all changed too much. Bad jingles, sweepers all over the place. Sounds so CC generic now.

This is not a "new" idea...The elimination of "Smooth Jazz" and a heavier dose of vocals.

Exactly. WJJZ in Philadelphia became a huge success in the 90s by going towards Urban AC with lots of vocals and less instrumental. The use of new age and unfocused instrumental music hurt the format.

the changes continue: right now KTWV's playing Joe Jackson's "Breaking Us in Two"...
not a big deal in itself...but the "feel" of that tune is just so different.
last week, I heard Talaya talking up to a vocal: how many decades has it been since
that happened on the 94.7 frequency? or maybe I'm projecting way too much into this...

Talking up vocals? Does that mean more "personality" for The Wave?

not really...but it is a definate change in presentation (and I haven't heard it happen lately)

I have heard them talk over the beginning of the instrumental at about :10ish, but there's no apparent attempt to hit any sort of post. And - unless you are equating "personality" with "energy - the Wave has actually had "personality" for quite a while. Each of their ATs has a definite style, and are probably very identifiable to their P1s. It does, however, sound like Jhani has been giving Don Burns an extra cup of coffee before he tracks his show..

Kim Amidon is coming aboard to do weekends at KTWV, according to Gary Lycan's column in Sunday's Orange County Register, but no start date was mentioned.

I heard Kim on KTWV's air while listening Saturday (2/6) early evening (around 7p).
