Jim Braude slams WRKO

2:15 PM or so Braude tells the curly haired boyfriend (Dan Shaughnessy) that if Bobby Bonds is convicted he can get a job on "the other radio station" (paraphrased, of course; who tapes while driving?)

Howie Carr and Colonel Hunt sounded awful...but not as awful as Carr & "The Sullivans" last night, that was some of the worst college radio on commercial radio RKO has ever aired.

Even Howie said "we'll turn to other topics but you can stay" (paraphrased)...what terrible guests!

on an awful note:

the ambulances were going by when I was at Office Depot in Woburn, Margery Eagen referenced the train crash
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070109/ap_on_re_us/commuter_rail_crash

it was literally around the corner from me around 3 PM ish

It's standard fare to take shots at competing stations.

Depetro once referred to "those clowns on the FM dial" (E&B) which was a much better shot ;D

Back to the point of the thread.

Mr. Braude should know better. That's something only insecure talent does, really. He should not worry about trying to make himself look better in comparison to others. It's a good sign that something or somebody from RKO probably irked him that day. It's a small world so you never know if a comment, guest, review, or something got stuck in his craw.
He so clearly wants to be Tom Ashbrooke, and Tom would never do that. Rise above, Jim! That's Depetro land.

And Severin referred to his former employer as "(pass gas) radio". So DePetro referred to E&B as clowns, eh?
I know Graham kind of came of DePetro's defense (or at least he had a bit saying that there were
certain words he couldn't say anymore). Wonder if E&B came to DePetro's defense on their show which would
be kind of ironic.

And certainly after Eddie Hi Howaya! moved to WWZN, WEEI made more than a few references to a station
"that you can't pick up"

Bobby Lee Bonds (March 15, 1946 – August 23, 2003) assures you that HE never took steroids...

Yeah, how'd that work out for him? :D

Are you really trying to help Braude or shut up yet another WRKO critic?

It appears to me that the possible hiring of Tom Finneran by WRKO is a special case. He WAS a public figure, and he IS in the news for his peccadillos, so 'RKO has left itself open to such commentaries by its main competitor. What's odd is Jay Severin's anti-AM radio comments as if the method of modulation matters with talk radio. When he does that, he is indirectly criticizing WRKO, but I don't think he ever told Westwood One to syndicate his show on FM's only.

.... they still poke fun at Eddie on WEEI... they play the "hihowaya" pretty regularly... thankfully, WWZN comes in pretty well... better at night lately, too. I wish it was stronger, though.

I heard Braude's comments and I thought he said Barry Bonds, not Bobby. Though he is not a sports expert by any stretch.

And his crack was perfect. The WRKO story is a story. WRKO is now synonymous with corrupt stooges who need jobs. That's going to become a standard Boston punchline if Finneran becomes WRKO's morning drive.

I think every talk radio fan, including Braude, should be pounding WRKO for putting a corrupt perjuror on the air to give his "honest" opinion about the Beacon Hill hacks currently defending his $400,000 a year job.

Finneran is the radio equivalent to Pete Rose. You know he's a crook and a liar--why would you let him be the public face of your radio station? Unless, of course, Finneran reflects the values of WRKO.

I agree with E&B that RKO is dead and a joke(except for Howie). Jay was killing RKO yesterday.

My apologies for the Barry Bonds snafu...ha ha...I was on the phone and multi-tasking as usual.
Oh well.

Eagen and Braude were not bad; I will be listening a lot more...and they put 96.9 on my preset by giving them
3 hours.

It's show business remember?

They(hosts) need all need any airtime they can get.
So if TKK had hired Finneran then Braude would still be doing his 3 hour gig.
And if RKO offered Braude enough money, he'd work there too.
They should get busy entertaining and informing regular people who just want good radio. Enough insider crap. Everyone (most) shows are associated with other media outlets (Herald mostly) then they have Guests from Globe and Phoenix so where can you get objective talk?
The hosts are not going to spend time slamming the tab's handling of a story, or the broadsheet's either, since they work there or invite guests from there.

None of this is fun for listeners or advertisers and all the participating hosts stand the danger of winding up spendign their days making up screen names and blogging here.

That's the truth.

And TKK Saturdays

..Apparently you haven't read my other postings. I like shows and hosts, not stations.

Also, my last post got cut short. It's kind of funny. It had to do with TKK Saturdays which are truly bizzaro bad but I am tired of just slamming people. Finn and Valv actually manage to post positive things also. Maybe I'll try to follow their examples. The whole reason I joined the ri was to talk about the news cuts at RKO after I moved back to Boston, which saddened me greatly. It doesn't look like those folks are coming back either...

Interesting distinction, Shotgun.

With all the hullabaloo about WRKO and Finneran, I've been wondering about other people who work at the station... Marjorie Claprood filled in and did a great job - if she gets a show, is she tainted? What if they offer her to work with Finneran. Should she turn it down? How about Ellen O'Brien and Mariellen Burns - are they now tainted because they've worked at RKO? If Viglione was offered a show (not with Finneran - so no opportunity to debate face to face), should he take it? If they hire Finneran, do you think everyone else should quit? What would you (really) do?

Marjorie and Finneran could be great if you are serious. I like that idea! Do you have any clout at any stations? I have no contacts at any of them now. Well, I do have one, but she seems to know less than RI board bloggers do these days.)
What would I do as a listener? It doesn't bother me that Severin is lousy after Eagen and Braude if that's what you mean. I'm not a weekday listener really so I doubt my vote counts. But I would listen to Braude and then shut it off for Severin and not hold any disgusting things Severin said against Braude. Is that the question? Is it whether Marjorie or Mariellen or Ted&Ellen or The Pundit Review or anyone else is tainted by RKO hiring a convicted felon? I'd take that up with Steve Bailey, who is the one person I do hear on weekday mornings. He's a Globe columnist I think who is on RKO on mornings and also filled in weekdays. I thought he was good. I doubt he feels he's tainted by Finneran being paid by same company. He wins a lot of awards I think. I'm back to Boston 6 months ago but I remember hearing that.

Well, I was thinking that Marjorie was great and if they're going to hire Finneran and pair him with someone, why not her - or her with someone else...

And, yes, that's what I mean - should everyone avoid a station who hires a questionable personality on principle? I appreciate your stance, especially since we're trying to get a wider range of views on radio at the moment.

Wait a minute. Who is "we?" Are you acting on behalf of one of the stations?

And here I thought our honest exchange about 'two chicks' last week was full of integrity. By the way, I went and looked at your posts. One week you said you couldn't take Mariellen's voice and the next week you were raving about her and the other Ellen. Then again, why is no one commenting on TKK weekends speaking of voices no one can stand? I'm worried everyone here has a personal agenda.

On a more serious note, Boston doesn't want to listen to Marjorie. It's has-been radio, sorry to say. I left and came back and it was like being in a time warp. She was back on the air. They will have to look for new talent to partner with Finneran but someone with Marjorie's name brand. I'm not sure how you do that. think RKO might have to change and bring new listeners with them instead of catering to the loyal listeners.

I'm leaving town for a bit and when I get back I assume I can catch all the radio buzz right here. Keep up the good work Finn. I hope you arent FINNeran as one poster suggested.
