Jim Lampley: LibTalk host?

QUICKIE: Listing to 'TLK this afternoon..Big Ed was on one of his fishing trips when low and behold, guess who was holding down the fort. Jim Lampley. YES! Jim former-KMPC-sports-guy-turned-CBS2-anchor-turned-JimRome's-permanent-pimp-in-box-pro-tembre Lampley! And sounding pretty good.

Lamps is already in the CC universe through Rome and Xtra/KLAC fill-ins. Could Lampley be angling for a local spot on 'TLK or maybe on on AAR or Jones?

Just asking

Don

Don't bet on it. Lampley may be a lefty-lib, but he is an otherwise very smart and astute guy. Smart enough to stay far away from the sinking ship that is Air America. (Or hasn't anyone heard about the fact that AAR is getting financed from underpriveliged boys and girls in New York City? Oh yeah, if all you're reading is the LA Times and the other MSM, you won't hear about it)

There's a bit more to the story than that.

http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2005/7/30/124315/828 has it all in one place, with links to various sources.

But you won't hear it in the MSM (like Fox News). :)

The source for the original "AAR stole from poor kids!" story comes from notorious right wing "newspaper" (and Rev. Moon-owned) Washington Times.

As far as AAR itself is concerned, I find it incredibly refreshing. Unfortunately, the only RADIO show on the network is Randi Rhodes. Al Franken has some interesting content, but I just can't listen longer than a few minutes. Franken needs a better cohost, someone who knows about compelling radio -- like Randi or Ed S.

Just my opinion. Your mileage may vary.

AAR - Stealing From Poor Kids to Finance O'Franken and His Ilk...

Sorry Archer, but claiming the source is simply another vast right-wing conspiracy and then using a far left bomb-throwing blog like Kos is simply not going to cut it. As the facts have become more known, AAR has gone into hiding while claiming they are the ones who have been fleeced (the gall!), and the out-of-business non-profit group that has made the "loans" to them is referring all inquiries to a tony Manhattan PR firm.

I do a LOT of work with small not-for profit organizations including boys and girls clubs, and I can assure you that none of them has a PR firm as this organization does so they will not have to answer tough questions. They actually use the money for the kids instead of funding start-up political talk networks.

As for the MSM, they will be picking it up too, and spinning just as kos is doing. It has already run on Fox and CNN, so the floodgates will be open soon. I have been monitoring KTLK (to the extent that I can stand to do so) and have not heard so much as a peep about the story. Nothing on the website either. And don't look for Jessie and Al to start marching the streets on this issue, even though money has been taken from disenfranchised black youth to prop up AAR - Their organizations actually have links to both the Boys and Girls Club and AAR. We have definitely not seen the end of this story.

Okay people, if you want to talk about politics, go to the Off The Air board, please ...

My only point is that there is only one source for the story -- the Washington Times -- which isn't at all reliable. Moreover, they said their information came from another paper... which, it turns out, doesn't exist.

Getting back to radio (Air America)....

The loan being talked about was arranged by former Republican operative Evan Cohen, who talked his way into the management of both the boys and girls club in question and Air America. He was forced out of Air America in May 2004, shortly after he arranged the loan and the conservative New York Sun has reported that it isn't clear if the money ever actually arrived at Air America (Cohen said that some of the money was to pay his medical bills and the medical bills of a member of his family). In any case, the current owners of Air America (who took over the network in May 2004) had nothing to do with the loan, but have promised to pay it back anyway.

Amen!

Back on the broadcasting side of the subject, I think Randi is the best on the network, and Ed is great on KTLK. As I was saying, I love the content on Al Franken's show, but he's just not good at radio, and his cohost doesn't help. Not that she's bad, she just doesn't mesh with him and doesn't move the show forward. If Franken had a cohost who controlled the flow and helped Franken focus, it would be a lot better in my opinion.

Just my opinion, your mileage may vary.

Re: AAR - Stealing From Poor Kids to Finance O'Franken and His Ilk...

They bought the entire Air America operation, assets and all related liabilities - They are obligated to pay back the money, they are *not* doing it out of the goodness of their hearts (c'mon now you know better than that!) The new owners must have known about the loan through their customary due diligence process.

It never ceases to amaze me how the left can find a right-wing bogeyman even when they are caught red-handed in a lie! Just like Dan Rather was set up by "rogue elements in the Republican Party"! - Please!!

Perhaps the fact that New York Attorney General has sought fit to launch a formal investigation into the sordid affair would address your point?

Evan Cohen, former Republican Operative, steals from poor kids

Just what is this "lie" that you're talking about? From what I've read, the current owners bought the assets, not the liabilities. That's common in this sort of takeover.

Sepeaking of lies, one of the current right-wing talking points is that the New York Times has done 59 "news stories" about Air America. It turns out that the "stories" were almost all passing references, references to the Vietnam-era CIA airline of the same name, or instances in which the words "Air" and "America" were next to each other in a story that nothing to do with the radio network ("US Air,America West in Talks").

This thread is (a) no longer local in focus and (b) more about politics than radio.

It is therefore closed.
