Jocks Who Have Made it From Providence to Major Markets

I saw this from the Northeast PA board, and thought it was a good topic. Anyone know any?

I know of Robby Bridges at Z100 in New York and Q102 in Philly and now back here in Providence at WCTK.

Among the first that come to mind:
1. Tony Mascaro of WPRO-FM became MD of WPLJ/New York City
2. TJ Napp of WPRO-FM became MD of Y-100/WHYI/Ft. Lauderdale
3. David Simpson of WPRO-FM has worked weekends at WPLJ/NYC
4. Dave Stewart, who currently has a syndicated show that runs on Coast, has worked at WPLJ/NYC. He was a weekender at WPRO-FM.
5. Lou Brutus of WHJY went on to work in Chicago.
6. Tiffany Hill of WCTK went on to work in Philadelphia.
7. Chuck Wilson of WPRO went on to host a national show on ESPN Radio.
8. John Laurenti recently made the jump from WHJY to WBOS.
9. "Jaxon" from WHJY and WWRX currently works at WMMR/Philadelphia.
10. Mark Van Ness of WWKX hosts a morning show on WPST (signal hits Philly nicely, athough the station is aimed at Trenton).
11. Linda Harris, formerly of WWKX, works at an Oldies station on the east coast of Florida (I can't remember which station).

There are many, many more...

Speaking of KIIS, their current night jock, Valentine, was one of the original jocks at "Kicks 106" back in the early 1990s. From there, he went to WZOU/Boston and then to Dallas's Kiss.

Both Steve York formerly of SNE and Mighty Mike from PRO-FM weekend in Boston. Both do WODS and I think York still pulls a shift at MIX. Didn't Jack Lawrence who weekends at ZLX once do afternoons on SNE?

I'm not sure if tv counts, but:
Karyn Bryant of WBRU became a TV host. Was with MTV, FX and TNT... most recently with CNN's "Showbiz Tonight."
Alison Stewart of WBRU... now a TV news anchor for MSNBC.
And in radio:
Alexa Tobin of WBRU was at K-ROCK in New York as APD/MD in the late 90's.
Melissa Culross of WBRU, WALE, WOTB (back when it was jazz) and B101 did weekends at KLLC ([email protected]) and and then afternoon drive at KIOI (Star 101.3), both in San Francisco. Now she is a producer-anchor-reporter at KCBS-AM in San Francisco.

Speaking of the Providence-to-WODS link, a bunch of former B101 jocks made that trip. Paul Perry, Michele Hughes and Bruce Palmer come to mind.

Plus, former B101 jock Dr. Don Spencer works for the Boston classical staion, too (call letters escape me at the moment)

Steve York also did weekend shifts at WNBC/New York at one time.

Jerry McKeanna ( Spelling ) From WWKX to Star 93.7 Boston and now he is at Mix 98.5 Boston . DJ Buck and Boom Boom and Ed S. from WWKX to Hot 93.7 Hartford Ct ( ok Hartford is not a big Market But DJ Buck and former Hot 106 crew made Hot 93.7 one of the best Hip Hop stations in America )

Noticed Kerry Collins tonight on WPRO-FM 92.3 ("92-PRO FM"). He went from WKCI-FM 101.3 ("KC-101") of Hamden/New Haven to Providence. OK, Hartford is a bigger metro area than Providence, but Providence's radio market is actually bigger than the Hartford/New Britain/Middletown market is. It's also larger than the New Haven market.<P ID="signature">______________

Nik Carter came to Providence from Boston worked at Kix 106 and years later did mornings at WDGE the Edge, now in New York at 92.3 Krock/Free FM

i KNEW his voice sounded familiar when i was out in LA two weeks ago...what did he go under at Kix 106?

A few WPRO-AM names come to mind:

Joel A. Spivak was a popular radio-TV personality in Philadelphia all through the 70s and 80s and was one of the early stars of Talk Radio. He used to follow Salty Brine in the morning on PRO in the early 60s before moving to WJAR-AM then Philly.

Bob Dearborn, known for his many years in Chicago at WCFL, WJJD, WJMK, has also worked in Detroit, Toronto, Seattle, and had a late-night network show for RKO for several years, was once the afternoon-drive jock and music director at WPRO.

Holland Cooke, one of the sharpest knives in the Talk Radio Consultant Drawer, was with WPRO in the 70s and came back to the market (WSNE) in the 80s.

Mark Simone, now heard for a dozen years on WABC as part of almost 30 years in New York radio (WMCA, WNEW, WPIX), was at PRO in the mid-70s.

Others...

> I saw this from the Northeast PA board, and thought it was a
> good topic. Anyone know any?

Others not mentioned:

Doug O'Brian, afternoons at WSNE, who already had major makret experience (Big 105/New York), left SNE and went to a station in Houston, another marjor market.

Courtney Young, middays at WSNE, left for a classic rock station in Miami.

Chris Egan, currently afternoons at WSNE, left B101 to work part-time at WODS.

Rob Tyler, nights at Pro-FM in the late 90s, left for the new Star 93.7 in Boston.

Norm Thibeault, the very first jock at B101 in 1989, now weekends at WODS.

Tom St. John, currently nights/APD/MD at B101, once worked weekends at WODS.

Electra, currently middays at Q101/Chicago, worked at WBRU and left there for Y100 here in Philly.

Ken Jackson, mornings at Z100, also did part-time work at Mix in Boston

Oh yeah.... and me. :) I'm currently at WXTU/Philadelphia.

I gotta say although some jocks here I've never heard and some really do have the talent to move to the majors, there are also some who are just indications of what some of the majors are hiring nowadays rather than any degree of talent beyond the norm.

He became "Sean Valentine" when he worked at Dallas's Kiss in the mid-to-late 1990s. Nik, was Valentine the original night jock at Kix 106? Or was he a weekender?

Another Boston voice I forgot to mention that also worked at Kix 106 was Artie the One Man Party, who worked at both WZOU and Kiss 108...

Chris Berman of ESPN did sports at WBRU.

More recent BRU alums include Elektra of Q101 in Chicago (and Y100 in Philly before that) and Ben Harvey who did the night shift at K-Rock in NYC and Y100 in Philly.
