JODY DEAN LEAVING CH. 11; NEW CONTRACT WITH KLUV

I've heard that argument, and I don't buy it. Thomas Paine nothwithstanding. Even the noblest false identities are merely designed to protect one's own little pot and the pitiful things in it we call "ours".

If one thinks reprisal is the worst thing that can happen, it isn't. One makes his or her point and then scurries back under the rocks. If discovered, you may or may not face the loss of your job. But by definition you've already sacrificed your integrity.

I did one thing of honor just once in my life that could concievably have cost me my job. I would have been thrilled to die on that hill.

Thanks for the invite, KPLEX. You're right. There are many good things here. But I like parties where people don't wear masks or hide under the furniture.

Although I still check this site to see what folks are talking about, I've made it a practice not to post here. There are some good folks here, but there are also way too many embittered wannabes who think they have the inside scoop, and get their jollies not from talking radio but from sniping from the shadows.

Say what you want about me, or my drama. The fact is we had a pretty good laugh about these posts in the office the other day - meaning, me and the folks who are said to dislike me behind my back. Or maybe we just get on each other's nerves from time to time, like everyone else on this planet. Neverthless, insofar as it depends on me, they aren't going anywhere for awhile - and apparently, neither am I. Whether that's good or bad is a matter of personal opinion, but it is a fact.

And you can say what you will about our approach or content. If you like it, fine. If not...that's why the good Lord put several buttons on the dial. And evidently the ratings an revenue are sufficient to move our employers to keep us on for a bit longer.

But when you negatively broach the subject of a friend, that's different. Steve Eberhardt and I saw every attribute Ron Chapman has to offer. Like everyone else, his character contains both bad and good. The reason so many of us love this man is because we believe the good vastly outweighs the bad, both personally and professionally. We didn't always like him, or what he had to say - but over the last few years many of us have come to understand what motivated this man and what he was trying to get accomplished. Never mind the fact that he was a single father trying to ensure provision in an industry bristling with failure and foolishness. Never mind that the success or failure of his station - and its people - largely rode on his shoulders. Never mind that he has always seen talent and potential and has done whatever it took - even if that was unpleasant - to get people to be what they could be.

Did that grate on us? Yes. Badly. So badly that it ran off the pretenders - most of whom have never forgiven him for finding them out and exposing their own character issues. In truth, he told us many things we weren't ready to hear - sometimes, very harshly. Scott West and Tim Vasquez once had to use a bottle of Scotch and five hours at Louie's to talk me out of shooting the man for tossing me out of a meeting. Looking back, I should have been tossed. In fact, I should have been fired - many times over. It would have been a favor - but then so was Chapman's patience.

I could also mention the thousands of kindnesses he has done for people that have never seen the light of day - people who were in no position to benefit Chapman. The poor, the bereaved, the heartbroken - stories I witnessed and remember, and which I'm obliged not to tell. Yet in spite of the unspeakable pressure put on this man by his company and himself, he found the time.

Can Ron be rude, abrupt, hurtful, or abusive? Yes. Most people have those facets buried within them. Few do not, and even most of those had to work past them. These attributes are by no means virtuous, but that doesn't preclude the individual from being virtuous overall. Great men have great strengths and great flaws. Good men simply have more of the former and fewer of the latter. But no one is perfect. And all in all, Ron is a great man. And he is a good man.

Pig Latin, I've changed...but not completely. There are still many things I have to work on every day. Some days, I'm more successful at it than others. I don't mind the criticism when it comes because it's usually valid or justified. But I'm far from "good". One thing I have a terrible time with is when someone goes after a friend of mine, particularly when they are anable or unavailable to speak for themselves. Call it whatever you like, but the "physical stuff" hasn't been left that far behind - and your ignorant analysis of Chapman and Steve begs its employ.

Jody,

First let me say i'm glad your back. I work at a network with Steve Eberhart, there are a couple others I work with that have worked with Chapman. What i gather from them you could still be doing your job and be thrown out of Chapmans world. Your quote above reminds me people love Chapman and try and stay in his circle to promote themselves. While Chapman may be retired he holds a tremendous amount of respect and can help one's career.

Congrats on your success at KLUV!

I'm not defending Ron or anyone who displays less than respectful behavoir to an employee or associate.

What I am saying is this is a tough business sometimes and sometimes you have to have a little tough skin to get through it. It is just like anything else, if you can't operate in that environment, then you have a choice to remain or stay.

While I can't speak for anyone else, I can say that many of us stayed there for a very long time LESS because we were enabling Ron...MORE because it was absolutely a great place to work.
They paid us pretty well, the ratings during the heyday were unbelievable, they had every tool one would need, and you always had a sense that you were working for probably the very best personality and promotion oriented station in the entire country. During that time, there was NO other station even coming CLOSE to the quality and talent being generated there. Being a part of that, as minor as it might have been, was an HONOR that only the truly passionate people understood. Some took it seriously, some did not. Some were able to find a way to make it work for them, others did not.

I operated in that environment for over 9 years on 2 different stints, and when I felt I could no longer, I left.

Was I happy about it at the time, not so much...but in the ensuing years, I have realized the enormous education I was given which I could not have gotten elsewhere, and I cherish the fact that I was a small part of what is still remembered as something very special. I also understand PASSION a bit more these days.

You will notice that both Jody and I are posting under our real names...my question is Why Don't YOU?!
Why doesn't everyone? That would probably put an end to the evil sniping that goes on here. If you are brave enough to make a statement, at least have the guts to put your name on it.

You can be bitter if you want, but if you did work there, you either didn't pay attention or left too soon to get the benefit that so many of us did. Life is a balance sheet...

Call it whatever you like, but the "physical stuff" hasn't been left that far behind - and your ignorant analysis of Chapman and Steve begs its employ.

I see no need to apologize for my post on Chapman, your "friend." You can personally forgive Chapman for his abuse. And I hope others can do so as well. But you seem to be taking an extra step, and are asking us to approve of that abuse as being part of a greater package.

I don't subscribe to your delusion that great people automatically arrive with that sort of baggage or that character flaw. And if they do, it needs to be addressed.

Today you're in the mood to come to his defense. Tomorrow you'll probably be cussing him. And you know what? That's actually a pretty normal reaction to a person with his talent for abuse and manipulation.

Jody.Steve:

Jody. The disagreement remains on the "NICS." The sad part is it still occurs. You and Steve have made it, therefore you can speak openly, and I commend you both for that. A few years back I did use my own name, and it resulted in my having to change a phone number, not to mention a loss of a job( though the topic was not about the job or the company, interestingly enough and no one was mentioned personally). In this climate we are in,reprisals are common for speaking your mind. it shouldn't be ,but it happens none the less. I was even chastised for defending a mutual friend of ours,"Judge". So I hope you re-evaluate and modify why "some" of us use a nic. It took courage for you to do that D magazine article and my respect for you increased ten fold.
For Steve, some day we will all be able to.
